The tinggal family connects four scenes that English usually expresses with different verbs. Bare tinggal means reside, stay, remain, or be left; meninggalkan means leave a place or leave something behind; ditinggalkan foregrounds what is left; and tertinggal often marks something accidentally left behind, omitted, or lagging. The noun peninggalan names remains, possessions left by someone, or a historical and cultural legacy.
The spelling contrast between locative di rumah and passive ditinggalkan is developed in the di/ke spacing guide.
This page follows the meanings of one lexical family. General affix formation belongs to Word Formation; see ter- meanings, -kan meanings, and meN- formation.
No person or tense conjugation
| Frame | Present/general | Past context | Future context |
|---|---|---|---|
| reside/stay | Saya tinggal di sini. | Dahulu saya tinggal di sini. | Tahun depan saya akan tinggal di sini. |
| remainder | Tinggal dua keping. | Tadi tinggal dua keping. | Nanti mungkin tinggal dua keping. |
| leave | Dia meninggalkan rumah. | Dia telah meninggalkan rumah. | Dia akan meninggalkan rumah. |
| passive | Beg itu ditinggalkan. | Beg itu sudah ditinggalkan. | Beg itu akan ditinggalkan. |
The forms do not change with person or tense. Dahulu, telah, sudah, and akan remain separate. Bare tinggal is a full predicate rather than an infinitive.
Tinggal: reside or stay
For residence, tinggal is normally followed by a location phrase with di. It can describe a permanent home or a temporary stay; duration and context distinguish them.
Keluarga saya tinggal di Ipoh, tetapi saya bekerja di Kuala Lumpur.
My family lives in Ipoh, but I work in Kuala Lumpur.
Nadia pernah tinggal di Bandung selama dua tahun ketika ayahnya bertugas di sana.
Nadia lived in Bandung for two years while her father was posted there.
Kami tinggal di rumah tumpangan berhampiran hospital sepanjang minggu itu.
We stayed at a guesthouse near the hospital throughout that week.
The required pattern tinggal di Bandung is ordinary Malaysian grammar even though Bandung is a city in Indonesia. The place name does not change the national variety of the sentence. For “live with someone,” add bersama or dengan: tinggal bersama datuk dan nenek.
Malaysian duduk can also mean reside in conversation, but its basic meaning is “sit.” Tinggal is the clearer neutral choice when residence or temporary accommodation is the main point.
Tinggal: remain or be left
Bare tinggal also reports what remains after part of a quantity, time period, group, or task has gone.
Biskut dalam balang itu tinggal dua keping sahaja.
There are only two biscuits left in the jar.
Masa tinggal sepuluh minit, jadi semak jawapan kamu sekarang.
There are ten minutes left, so check your answers now.
Selepas semua tetamu pulang, tinggal kami bertiga di ruang tamu.
After all the guests went home, only the three of us remained in the living room.
In speech, tinggal dua can stand alone when the omitted noun is already obvious. The subject may follow tinggal, especially in presentational statements such as tinggal saya seorang “only I remain.” English learners often expect have or a passive construction, but Malay directly predicates remainder with tinggal.
The pattern tinggal + action can also mean “all that remains is to do the action.”
Laporan sudah siap; tinggal ketua jabatan menandatanganinya.
The report is ready; all that remains is for the head of department to sign it. (conversation)
This construction is concise and common especially in speech and informal planning notes. More formal prose can expand it as Hanya tandatangan ketua jabatan yang masih diperlukan “Only the head of department's signature is still required.”
Meninggalkan: leave a place, person, object, or trace
Meninggalkan is transitive. Its object can be the place departed from, the person or object left behind, or an abstract result such as a message, impression, debt, or legacy.
Bas terakhir meninggalkan terminal tepat pada pukul sebelas malam.
The last bus left the terminal at exactly eleven at night.
Sila jangan meninggalkan beg tanpa pengawasan di ruang menunggu.
Please do not leave bags unattended in the waiting area. (formal)
Ayah meninggalkan pesanan supaya kami mengunci semua tingkap.
Father left a message telling us to lock all the windows.
Lawatan singkat itu meninggalkan kesan yang mendalam kepada para pelajar.
That short visit left a deep impression on the students.
The direct object does not tell you by itself whether it is a source or an abandoned theme. Meninggalkan Johor Bahru means depart from Johor Bahru; meninggalkan beg means leave a bag behind. World knowledge and complements resolve the relation.
Do not confuse meninggalkan with meninggal. Meninggal dunia means “pass away” (formal/euphemistic); it is not a shorter way to say “leave a city.”
Ditinggalkan: what or who is left
Ditinggalkan is the passive counterpart. It often occurs when the actor is unknown, obvious, or less important than the affected person, place, or object.
Payung merah itu ditinggalkan di bawah kerusi selepas mesyuarat.
That red umbrella was left under the chair after the meeting.
Kucing itu ditinggalkan oleh pemiliknya ketika mereka berpindah rumah.
The cat was abandoned by its owners when they moved house.
Rumah lama tersebut telah ditinggalkan selama hampir dua puluh tahun.
That old house has been abandoned for nearly twenty years.
The social force varies. A forgotten umbrella was simply left; a pet ditinggalkan may have been abandoned. Translation must follow the situation. Passive di- is attached, while di bawah kerusi and di rumah retain separate locative di.
Tertinggal: accidentally left, omitted, or lagging
Tertinggal typically removes deliberate control. An item may be forgotten somewhere, information may be omitted, or a person may fall behind a group.
Telefon saya tertinggal di dalam kereta, jadi saya tidak nampak mesej awak.
I left my phone in the car, so I didn't see your message.
Satu nama tertinggal ketika senarai peserta disediakan semalam.
One name was accidentally omitted when the participant list was prepared yesterday.
Haziq tertinggal di belakang kumpulannya ketika mendaki dalam hujan.
Haziq fell behind his group while hiking in the rain.
The required idea barang tertinggal presents the item as an unintended residue. Compare Dia meninggalkan beg di pejabat—which can be deliberate—with Begnya tertinggal di pejabat, which strongly suggests oversight.
Ketinggalan is a related but distinct lexicalized form meaning left behind, behind the times, or having missed transport: ketinggalan bas “miss the bus.” It should not be substituted mechanically for tertinggal barang.
Peninggalan: remains, inheritance, or legacy
Peninggalan names something that remains from a person, society, event, or historical period. It can refer to property left by a deceased person, archaeological remains, monuments, customs, or an intellectual legacy.
Muzium itu mempamerkan barang peninggalan keluarga diraja Perak.
The museum displays heirlooms left by the Perak royal family.
Tapak peninggalan sejarah itu dipulihara untuk generasi akan datang.
That historical heritage site is preserved for future generations. (formal)
Novel-novelnya menjadi peninggalan penting dalam kesusasteraan Melayu moden.
Her novels became an important legacy in modern Malay literature. (literary/academic)
The noun is lexicalized: a forgotten phone is normally telefon yang tertinggal, not grandly peninggalan telefon.
Common Mistakes
1. Omitting locative di with residence
❌ Mereka tinggal Kota Bharu sejak tahun lalu.
Incorrect in the ordinary residence frame—the place is introduced by di.
✅ Mereka tinggal di Kota Bharu sejak tahun lalu.
They have lived in Kota Bharu since last year.
2. Confusing tinggal with meninggal
❌ Pak cik saya meninggal di Seremban dan bekerja di sana.
Incorrect for residence—meninggal means died in this context.
✅ Pak cik saya tinggal di Seremban dan bekerja di sana.
My uncle lives and works in Seremban.
3. Making an accidentally forgotten object deliberate
❌ Kunci saya meninggalkan di atas meja tanpa sengaja.
Incorrect valency—the key cannot deliberately leave itself.
✅ Kunci saya tertinggal di atas meja tanpa saya sedari.
I accidentally left my key on the table.
4. Separating passive di-
❌ Rumah itu di tinggalkan selepas banjir besar.
Incorrect spacing—the passive verb ditinggalkan is one word.
✅ Rumah itu ditinggalkan selepas banjir besar melanda kawasan tersebut.
The house was abandoned after a major flood struck the area.
5. Adding an English tense ending
❌ Kami tinggaled di hotel itu minggu lepas.
Incorrect—tinggal has no English past ending.
✅ Kami tinggal di hotel itu selama tiga malam minggu lepas.
We stayed at that hotel for three nights last week.
Key Takeaways
Use tinggal di + place for residence or a stay, and bare tinggal for what remains. Transitive meninggalkan means depart from or leave something, while ditinggalkan foregrounds the affected object or person. Tertinggal commonly marks accidental residue, omission, or lagging, and peninggalan names heritage or a lasting remnant. None of these forms changes for person or tense.
