Malay perlu works both like a necessity predicate and like a modal before another verb: Saya perlu bantuan “I need help,” Saya perlu berehat “I need to rest,” and Langkah ini perlu “This step is necessary.” Transitive memerlukan directly selects what a person, process, or system requires; passive diperlukan foregrounds the needed item; and keperluan names a need, requirement, or necessary supply.
English need hides these differences because it can be a verb, noun, or semi-modal. Malay signals the contrast through complement type and derivation without adding person or tense endings.
Family and complement table
| Form | Typical frame | Core meaning | Register |
|---|---|---|---|
| perlu + noun | subject + perlu + thing | need something | neutral |
| perlu + verb | subject + perlu + action | need to; it is necessary to | neutral |
| perlu | thing/action + perlu | be necessary | neutral/formal |
| tidak perlu | tidak perlu + noun/verb | not need; need not | neutral |
| memerlukan | subject + memerlukan + object | require, be in need of | neutral/formal |
| diperlukan | needed item + diperlukan | be required/needed | neutral/formal |
| keperluan | keperluan + domain/possessor | need, requirement, necessities | neutral/formal |
The forms remain unchanged through person and time:
| Subject/time | Malay | Marker |
|---|---|---|
| I, past | semalam saya perlu berehat | semalam |
| she, current | sekarang dia memerlukan bantuan | sekarang |
| they, future | mereka akan memerlukan ruang tambahan | akan |
Neither perlu nor memerlukan is an infinitive. Memerlukan is an active transitive form, and separate words express time and aspect.
Perlu with a noun
With a noun phrase, perlu predicates a need of the subject. It is direct and common in both speech and writing.
Saya perlu bantuan untuk mengangkat kotak ini.
I need help to lift this box.
Pesakit itu perlu rehat yang cukup selepas pembedahan.
The patient needs sufficient rest after the operation.
Kita perlu lebih banyak masa sebelum membuat keputusan.
We need more time before making a decision.
This pattern resembles an adjective-like predicate more than an English conjugating verb: saya perlu bantuan, mereka perlu bantuan, and semalam kami perlu bantuan all retain perlu. No copula corresponding to English be is required.
Perlu with a verb
Before an action, perlu marks practical, situational, or norm-based necessity. The following verb appears directly, without an infinitive ending.
Anda perlu mengisi semua ruangan yang bertanda bintang.
You need to fill in all fields marked with an asterisk. (formal instruction)
Kami perlu berbincang dengan pihak sekolah sebelum menetapkan tarikh.
We need to discuss it with the school before setting a date.
Bumbung itu perlu dibaiki sebelum musim tengkujuh bermula.
The roof needs to be repaired before the monsoon season begins.
In perlu dibaiki, the action itself is necessary and dibaiki is passive: the roof is what will undergo repair. Malay does not need an English-style needs repairing/to be repaired alternation.
As a complete predicate, perlu can also mean “necessary”:
Perubahan itu perlu, tetapi pelaksanaannya mesti dibuat secara berperingkat.
The change is necessary, but its implementation must be carried out in stages.
The broader comparison among perlu, mesti, harus, and wajib appears in the obligation decision guide. In brief, perlu often presents a need arising from goals or circumstances; mesti gives stronger requirement; wajib is common for binding legal, moral, or religious duty. Context can narrow or strengthen each.
Tidak perlu: absence of necessity
Tidak perlu means “not necessary,” “do not need,” or “need not.” It removes the necessity; it does not normally prohibit the action.
Awak tidak perlu datang awal esok kerana mesyuarat sudah ditangguhkan.
You don't need to come early tomorrow because the meeting has been postponed.
Resit asal tidak perlu disertakan jika salinan telah disahkan.
The original receipt need not be enclosed if the copy has been certified. (formal)
Compare Anda tidak perlu masuk “you need not enter” with Anda tidak boleh masuk “you may/cannot enter” and Jangan masuk “do not enter.” English don't have to and mustn't are easily confused, but Malay marks lack of necessity and prohibition separately.
Memerlukan: a transitive requirement
Memerlukan takes a direct object and often sounds more explicit or institutional than perlu + noun. It is especially natural when a process, task, organization, or object has requirements.
Pemulihan sepenuhnya memerlukan masa yang panjang dan pemantauan rapi.
Full recovery requires a long time and close monitoring.
Sistem baharu itu memerlukan sambungan internet yang stabil.
The new system requires a stable internet connection.
Keluarga tersebut memerlukan sokongan kewangan buat sementara waktu.
The family needs financial support temporarily.
For an elapsed duration, masa is the idiomatic default in Malaysian Malay: Proses ini memerlukan masa yang lama. Waktu is also a standard Malay word, but it more readily identifies or organizes a time—waktu solat, waktu pejabat, pada waktu itu—than names the duration a process requires. This is a collocational distinction, not a ban on waktu.
Although Saya perlu bantuan and Saya memerlukan bantuan describe the same need, their presentation differs. The first is compact and predicate-like; the second explicitly casts the subject as an entity requiring an object. Formal assessments and institutional descriptions often favor memerlukan.
Diperlukan: what is required
Passive diperlukan brings the needed resource, qualification, action, or person to the front. It is written solid because di- is a verbal prefix.
Dua orang sukarelawan diperlukan untuk menguruskan kaunter pendaftaran.
Two volunteers are needed to manage the registration counter.
Dokumen yang diperlukan disenaraikan pada halaman terakhir borang.
The required documents are listed on the final page of the form. (formal)
Maklumat tambahan mungkin diperlukan sebelum permohonan diluluskan.
Additional information may be required before the application is approved. (formal)
The time is carried by mungkin, akan, masih, or context—not by a tense inside diperlukan.
Keperluan: need, requirement, and necessary supplies
Keperluan is an established noun. It can denote an abstract need, a formal requirement, or collectively the items necessary for an activity.
Kerusi dan kabinet baharu telah dibeli untuk memenuhi keperluan pejabat.
New chairs and cabinets were bought to meet the office's needs.
Bekalan air bersih ialah keperluan asas setiap masyarakat.
A clean water supply is a basic need of every community.
Sila semak keperluan permohonan sebelum menghantar dokumen.
Please check the application requirements before submitting the documents. (formal)
In barang keperluan, the noun classifies essential goods or supplies. Do not assume that keperluan is merely a plural of perlu; it has its own nominal syntax and lexical combinations.
Common Mistakes
1. Adding an infinitive marker after perlu
❌ Kami perlu untuk membincangkan masalah itu sekarang.
Overmarked for the ordinary modal-like frame.
✅ Kami perlu membincangkan masalah itu sekarang.
We need to discuss that problem now.
2. Using memerlukan before an action as though it were a modal
❌ Saya memerlukan pergi ke klinik petang ini.
Incorrect—memerlukan takes a noun object, not a bare action complement.
✅ Saya perlu pergi ke klinik petang ini.
I need to go to the clinic this afternoon.
3. Confusing lack of necessity with prohibition
❌ Anda tidak perlu merokok di kawasan ini.
Wrong if the intended meaning is that smoking is prohibited; this says smoking is unnecessary.
✅ Anda dilarang merokok di kawasan ini.
Smoking is prohibited in this area.
4. Splitting passive di-
❌ Tiga salinan dokumen di perlukan untuk pendaftaran.
Incorrect—the passive prefix di- is attached.
✅ Tiga salinan dokumen diperlukan untuk pendaftaran.
Three copies of the document are required for registration.
5. Treating a passive form as past tense
❌ Sistem itu telah diperlukan kata laluan baharu.
Incorrect for the intended active meaning—diperlukan is passive, not a past-tense form.
✅ Sistem itu memerlukan kata laluan baharu.
The system requires a new password.
Key Takeaways
Use perlu + noun for a compact statement of need, perlu + verb for necessary action, and tidak perlu for absence of necessity. Transitive memerlukan foregrounds a subject's requirements; passive diperlukan foregrounds the needed item; and keperluan names a need, requirement, or necessary supply. Keep time/aspect separate and do not import an English infinitive or agreement ending.
