Malaysian Malay distributes English speak, talk, and discuss across both grammar and register. Bare cakap is common in conversation, standard bercakap is intransitive and adds a person with dengan or a topic with tentang, while transitive membincangkan takes the topic directly. Kami bercakap tentang jadual and Kami membincangkan jadual describe related events through different argument frames.
These are not all morphological forms of one root—bincang is separate from cakap—but learners need them together because English talk/discuss encourages the same recurrent preposition errors.
Family and frame table
| Form | Frame | Meaning | Register |
|---|---|---|---|
| cakap | cakap (dengan X / tentang Y) | speak/talk | informal as a verb |
| bercakap | bercakap dengan X tentang Y | speak with X about Y | neutral |
| berbincang | berbincang dengan X tentang Y | discuss/deliberate together | neutral/formal |
| membincangkan | membincangkan Y dengan X | discuss Y with X | neutral/formal |
| percakapan | percakapan tentang Y | conversation/speech | neutral/formal |
The forms do not conjugate for person or tense: semalam kami bercakap, sekarang kami sedang bercakap, esok kami akan bercakap. Aspect and time words remain separate.
Bare cakap in conversation
As a verb, cakap is natural in informal Malaysian speech and dialogue.
Saya nak cakap dengan awak tentang hal semalam.
I want to talk to you about what happened yesterday. (informal)
Cakap perlahan sikit; bayi tengah tidur.
Speak a little more softly; the baby is sleeping. (informal)
Dia cakap mesyuarat itu dibatalkan.
She said the meeting was cancelled. (informal reported speech)
The third use resembles reporting kata, with a following content clause. In careful prose, use berkata bahawa, mengatakan bahawa, or another precise reporting verb. Bare cakap is not equally suitable in an academic report, official notice, and conversation.
As a noun, cakap also appears in fixed combinations such as cakap kosong “empty talk” and cakap besar “boasting.” Those lexical meanings do not make every bare verbal use formal.
Bercakap and its complements
Neutral bercakap normally does not take a topic as an unmarked direct object. Add dengan for the interlocutor and tentang for the topic.
Pengurus sedang bercakap dengan pelanggan tersebut di bilik mesyuarat.
The manager is speaking with that customer in the meeting room.
Kami bercakap tentang rancangan perpindahan pejabat.
We talked about the plan to move the office.
Saya bercakap dengan penyelia tentang jadual kerja baharu.
I spoke with the supervisor about the new work schedule.
Other complements identify language or manner: bercakap dalam bahasa Melayu, bercakap dengan jelas, bercakap bagi pihak organisasi. The preposition states the relation; it is not ornamental.
Berbincang versus membincangkan
Berbincang profiles reciprocal or joint discussion and introduces the topic with tentang.
Wakil pekerja berbincang dengan pihak pengurusan tentang waktu syif.
Employee representatives discussed shift times with management.
Transitive membincangkan makes the issue its direct object, without tentang.
Jawatankuasa akan membincangkan cadangan itu pada hari Khamis.
The committee will discuss the proposal on Thursday.
Kami membincangkan masalah bekalan air dengan pegawai daerah.
We discussed the water-supply problem with the district officer.
The contrast is valency, not level of seriousness alone:
| Joint-discussion frame | Transitive topic frame |
|---|---|
| berbincang tentang jadual | membincangkan jadual |
| berbincang dengan pengurus | membincangkan isu itu dengan pengurus |
See Common Preposition Errors for why membincangkan tentang is redundant in edited Standard Malay.
Percakapan and related nouns
Percakapan means conversation, speech, or the act/style of speaking. It is common when the spoken interaction itself becomes a noun.
Percakapan mereka terhenti apabila pengerusi memasuki bilik.
Their conversation stopped when the chairperson entered the room.
Rakaman percakapan itu digunakan dengan kebenaran semua peserta.
The recording of the conversation was used with every participant's permission. (formal)
Pertuturan is a more technical/formal noun for speech or spoken production, while ucapan commonly means a speech/address or utterance in a defined context. Choose the lexical noun according to genre rather than mechanically adding an affix to cakap.
Bicara and membicarakan
Bicara, berbicara, and membicarakan are standard and highly productive in neighboring Indonesian. Malaysian Malay recognizes bicara in literary, legal, and fixed expressions—budi bicara, acara bicara, bicara hati—but everyday Malaysian speech normally prefers cakap/bercakap, and ordinary formal discussion prefers berbincang/membincangkan.
Mahkamah menetapkan tarikh bicara baharu pada bulan Oktober.
The court set a new trial date in October. (Malaysian legal use)
Mereka membicarakan masalah itu sepanjang malam.
They discussed the problem all night. (standard Indonesian; marked/less usual as neutral Malaysian wording)
Do not call bicara foreign in every Malaysian occurrence; its local domains are real. Label the broader neighboring-national distribution and choose the Malaysian default appropriate to the setting.
Common Mistakes
1. Giving bercakap a direct topic object
❌ Kami bercakap masalah jadual semalam.
Incorrect in careful Standard Malay—bercakap introduces its topic with tentang.
✅ Kami bercakap tentang masalah jadual selepas mesyuarat semalam.
We talked about the scheduling problem after yesterday's meeting.
2. Adding tentang after membincangkan
❌ Mereka membincangkan tentang kos pembaikan.
Redundant in edited Standard Malay—membincangkan already takes the topic directly.
✅ Mereka membincangkan kos pembaikan lif dengan kontraktor.
They discussed the lift repair costs with the contractor.
3. Using conversational cakap in a formal report
⚠️ Laporan ini cakap tentang tiga masalah utama.
Colloquial and personifying in an unsuitable formal context.
✅ Laporan ini membincangkan tiga masalah utama dalam sistem tersebut.
This report discusses three main problems in the system. (formal)
4. Confusing interlocutor and topic
❌ Saya bercakap tentang pengurus dengan masalah itu.
Wrong relation order for the intended meaning ‘with the manager about that problem.’
✅ Saya bercakap dengan pengurus tentang masalah tersebut.
I spoke with the manager about that problem.
5. Treating membicarakan as the unmarked Malaysian default
⚠️ Kami akan membicarakan jadual latihan esok.
Understandable and standard in Indonesian, but marked as a neutral Malaysian choice.
✅ Kami akan membincangkan jadual latihan esok pagi.
We will discuss the training schedule tomorrow morning.
Key Takeaways
Use informal cakap coherently in conversation, neutral bercakap dengan X tentang Y for speaking, reciprocal berbincang tentang Y, and transitive membincangkan Y for discussing a topic directly. Percakapan names the conversation. Malaysian bicara has real legal and literary uses, but the broad membicarakan pattern is more characteristic of neighboring Indonesian than neutral Malaysian prose.
