The root ambil has a broad core meaning: take something into one's control or remove it from a place. Bare Ambil ini is a command, actor-voice mengambil kunci reports who takes the keys, passive kunci diambil makes the keys prominent, and benefactive mengambilkan air adds someone for whom the water is fetched.
The English verbs take, get, pick up, collect, and have overlap with ambil, but do not predict every derivative. Pengambilan can mean intake, collection, or recruitment, while terambil often means “taken accidentally.” Learn the construction and collocation, not just the nearest translation.
No person or tense conjugation
The forms stay unchanged across subjects and times. Separate words locate the event.
| Construction | Present/general | Past | Future |
|---|---|---|---|
| actor voice | Saya mengambil kunci. | Semalam saya mengambil kunci. | Esok saya akan mengambil kunci. |
| passive | Kunci itu diambil. | Kunci itu sudah diambil. | Kunci itu akan diambil. |
| benefactive | Saya mengambilkan air untuk ibu. | Saya telah mengambilkan air untuk ibu. | Saya akan mengambilkan air untuk ibu. |
| accidental | Saya terambil payungnya. | Semalam saya terambil payungnya. | — context normally reports an accidental event |
Mengambil, mengambilkan, diambil, pengambilan, and terambil are written solid. Sudah and akan remain separate because they are not tense affixes.
Bare ambil in commands and object voice
The base form is natural in a direct command.
Ambil ini dan tunjukkan kepada pegawai di kaunter hadapan.
Take this and show it to the officer at the front counter.
Ambil payung sebelum keluar; nampaknya hujan akan turun.
Take an umbrella before going out; it looks like rain.
It also appears in first- and second-person object voice, after the short actor:
Borang itu saya ambil dari pejabat daerah semalam.
I collected that form from the district office yesterday.
Informal actor-first Saya ambil kunci dulu is widespread (informal). Careful Standard Malay generally uses Saya mengambil kunci dahulu. The base is not an infinitive; each bare use is licensed by command, voice, or colloquial structure.
Mengambil: take, collect, choose, or consume
Mengambil is the broad transitive actor-voice form and takes a direct object.
Farah mengambil kunci kereta dari atas rak.
Farah took the car keys from the shelf.
Saya akan mengambil bungkusan itu di pejabat pos petang ini.
I will collect the parcel at the post office this afternoon.
Doktor meminta pesakit mengambil ubat tersebut selepas makan.
The doctor asked the patient to take the medicine after eating.
Jawatankuasa mengambil kira kos penyelenggaraan sebelum memilih pembekal.
The committee takes maintenance costs into account before choosing a supplier. (formal)
The object identifies what is taken, collected, consumed, or included in consideration. The location source uses dari; the pickup location may use di. The verb's meaning shifts by collocation, not by tense.
Passive diambil changes prominence
Passive diambil makes the taken item the subject. The actor may be omitted or expressed with oleh.
Kunci pendua itu sudah diambil oleh penyelia bangunan.
The spare key has been collected by the building supervisor.
Gambar ini diambil di Pulau Pinang pada tahun 1987.
This photograph was taken in Penang in 1987.
The first di- in diambil is attached passive morphology. Location di Pulau Pinang is separate. Voice changes which participant is prominent, not when the event occurred.
Diambil has extended collocations: a photo is taken, a decision or measure may be taken in some expressions, and a participant may be selected. Prefer established Malaysian combinations rather than copying every English take phrase.
Mengambilkan: fetch or take something for someone
Benefactive mengambilkan adds a participant who benefits from the taking. A transparent pattern is mengambilkan + thing + untuk + beneficiary.
Saya mengambilkan segelas air untuk nenek sebelum makan malam.
I fetched a glass of water for Grandmother before dinner.
Boleh awak mengambilkan fail biru itu untuk saya?
Could you get that blue file for me?
Jururawat mengambilkan selimut tambahan untuk pesakit di katil hujung.
The nurse fetched an extra blanket for the patient in the end bed.
Compare Saya mengambil air “I get/take water” with Saya mengambilkan air untuk nenek “I get water for Grandmother.” The suffix does not simply make the verb more formal or emphatic; it licenses a benefactive relation.
The passive can keep the fetched item prominent:
Selimut tambahan itu diambilkan oleh jururawat untuk pesakit tersebut.
The extra blanket was fetched by the nurse for that patient.
See the meaning of -kan for the wider benefactive pattern; mengambilkan is its high-frequency lexical realization in this family.
Terambil: accidental taking
Terambil commonly presents the action as accidental or unintended.
Maaf, saya terambil payung awak kerana warnanya sama.
Sorry, I took your umbrella by mistake because it was the same colour.
Dia terambil fail lama lalu membawanya ke mesyuarat.
She accidentally took the old file and brought it to the meeting.
This form is not a general passive. The subject is still the accidental taker, and the following noun is what was taken. Some ter- forms elsewhere express ability or a resulting state, so terambil should be learned with its conventional accidental reading.
Pengambilan: process nouns with several domains
Pengambilan names an act or process associated with taking. Its precise English translation depends on the noun that follows.
| Collocation | Meaning | Typical register |
|---|---|---|
| pengambilan ubat | medicine intake | medical/formal |
| pengambilan pekerja | employee recruitment/hiring | administrative |
| pengambilan gambar | taking photographs | neutral/formal |
| pengambilan sampel | sample collection | technical |
| pengambilan tanah | land acquisition | legal/formal |
Pengambilan ubat secara tetap penting untuk mengawal tekanan darah.
Taking medicine regularly is important for controlling blood pressure. (medical)
Syarikat itu menghentikan pengambilan pekerja baharu buat sementara waktu.
The company temporarily stopped recruiting new employees. (administrative)
Pengambilan does not mean one fixed English noun such as taking. The institutional domain supplies recruitment, intake, collection, or acquisition.
Common idioms and collocations
| Expression | Meaning | Note |
|---|---|---|
| ambil kira | take into account | neutral/formal |
| ambil berat | care about/pay serious attention | neutral |
| ambil bahagian | take part | neutral/formal |
| ambil alih | take over | neutral/formal |
| ambil masa | take time | standard Malaysian baseline |
| membuat/mengambil keputusan | make/take a decision | both accepted; membuat is a safe Malaysian baseline |
Kerja pembaikan itu mengambil masa hampir tiga minggu.
The repair work took almost three weeks.
Dia sangat mengambil berat tentang kebajikan pekerja bawahannya.
She cares deeply about the welfare of the employees under her supervision.
The words in ambil kira, ambil berat, and ambil alih remain separate. Their meanings are conventional and cannot be reconstructed by choosing a random English use of take.
Common Mistakes
1. Treating ambil as a formal infinitive
⚠️ Pegawai itu ambil dokumen dari bilik fail setiap pagi.
Natural in informal speech, but too colloquial for the intended careful actor-voice statement.
✅ Pegawai itu mengambil dokumen dari bilik fail setiap pagi.
The officer collects documents from the records room every morning.
2. Using mengambilkan without a beneficiary
❌ Farah mengambilkan kunci itu untuk kegunaannya sendiri.
Mismatched benefactive form—the stated purpose is for Farah herself, not an added beneficiary.
✅ Farah mengambil kunci itu dari atas meja sebelum keluar.
Farah took the key from the table before leaving.
3. Failing to mark the benefactive relation
❌ Saya mengambil air kepada nenek.
Incorrect relation—broad mengambil does not introduce the beneficiary with kepada this way.
✅ Saya mengambilkan segelas air untuk nenek yang sedang berehat.
I fetched a glass of water for Grandmother, who was resting.
4. Separating passive di-
❌ Gambar itu di ambil di hadapan bangunan lama.
Incorrect spacing—the passive verb diambil is solid; location di hadapan remains separate.
✅ Gambar keluarga itu diambil di hadapan bangunan lama tersebut.
That family photograph was taken in front of the old building.
5. Reading terambil as an ordinary passive
❌ Dokumen itu terambil oleh pegawai pada pukul sembilan mengikut jadual.
Wrong for a neutral scheduled collection—terambil presents the taking as accidental rather than routine.
✅ Dokumen itu diambil oleh pegawai pada pukul sembilan seperti yang dijadualkan.
The document was collected by the officer at nine as scheduled.
Key Takeaways
Use bare ambil in commands and object voice, mengambil for broad actor-voice taking, and diambil when the taken item is prominent. Mengambilkan adds a beneficiary, while terambil normally marks accidental taking. Pengambilan changes meaning by domain—intake, recruitment, collection, or acquisition. All actual derivatives are solid words, while aspect markers and locative di remain separate.
