A Standard Malaysian Rumi Editing Checklist

A reliable Rumi edit is a sequence of focused passes, not a vague final rereading. First check grammatical boundaries, then lexical and national-standard spelling, then capitals, punctuation, numerals, and register. This workflow catches errors that a spellchecker can miss because both pieces of a wrongly spaced form may themselves be valid Malay words.

Laporan itu ditulis di pejabat dan dihantar kepada kedua-dua pengurus.

The report was written at the office and sent to both managers.

This one sentence contains an attached passive di- (ditulis), a separate location di (di pejabat), and a hyphenated collective numeral (kedua-dua). Editing requires grammatical analysis, not sound-to-letter matching alone.

The complete checklist

Use the passes below in this order. A later pass should not distract you from an earlier structural problem.

PassWhat to inspectTypical contrast
1di and keditulis vs di pejabat; kedua vs ke pejabat
2affix attachmentdibaiki, not di-baiki
3reduplicationbuku-buku, kedua-dua
4cliticsbukuku, membaikinya, kubaca
5compoundsjalan raya vs kerjasama
6loanwords and national varietyMalaysian aktiviti, not Indonesian aktivitas
7capitalsIsnin, bahasa Melayu, Salmah
8punctuationquotation marks, commas, full stops, apostrophes
9numerals, dates, money, units1 Januari 2027, RM25.50
10register consistencyneutral/formal vocabulary throughout a formal report

The order is practical rather than metaphysical. Correcting boundaries first stabilizes the words that later passes evaluate.

Passes 1–4: inspect morpheme boundaries

Start with items whose pronunciation does not reliably reveal spacing. Separate locative di and directional ke, but attach passive di- and ordinal ke-. Then attach ordinary prefixes and suffixes, preserve reduplication hyphens, and join clitics to their hosts.

Kedua-dua dokumen itu diperiksa di kaunter.

Both documents were checked at the counter.

Fail itu kubaca sebelum saya menyerahkannya kepada pengurus.

I read that file before handing it to the manager.

Search can help: find every occurrence of di and ke, including those embedded in a word, and test its grammatical function. A spellchecker may not object to di periksa because di and periksa both exist; only grammar tells you that diperiksa is required.

Do the same for repeated forms and short pronouns. Exact reduplication normally takes a hyphen (rumah-rumah), whereas an affixed word remains solid (perumahan). Bound -nya follows its host (laporannya), while independent dia remains a separate word.

πŸ’‘
The highest-yield Rumi edit is a boundary pass. Many visible errors occur between valid pieces, so ordinary spellcheck has no reason to flag them.

Passes 5–6: verify compounds, loans, and the national standard

Next inspect compounds. Keep ordinary compounds spaced (jalan raya, kereta api) and established Malaysian compounds solid (kerjasama, tanggungjawab, setiausaha, jawatankuasa). Whole-compound circumfixation may close a base up, as in menguatkuasakan.

Jawatankuasa itu bertanggungjawab menguatkuasakan peraturan baharu.

The committee is responsible for enforcing the new regulations. (formal)

Do not accept a form merely because it is intelligible elsewhere in the Malay-speaking world. Indonesian kerja sama, bertanggung jawab, and aktivitas are correct in Standard Indonesian, but a Standard Malaysian document uses kerjasama, bertanggungjawab, and aktiviti. Such comparisons must be explicitly labeled; they are not informal Malaysian alternatives.

Aktiviti kerjasama itu akan diteruskan pada tahun hadapan.

That cooperation activity will continue next year. (Malaysian standard)

For loans, distinguish an established Malaysian adaptation from an unadapted foreign expression. Use the current Malaysian form required by the publication, and italicize a genuinely foreign expression only when editorial convention calls for it. Loanword spelling supplies the detailed patterns.

Passes 7–9: normalize capitals, punctuation, and numerals

Capitalize proper names, official institutions, weekdays, months, and the first word of a sentence. Keep a descriptive common noun lowercase. Thus Isnin, Januari, Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka, and Salmah take capitals in their relevant uses, while bahasa remains lowercase in ordinary bahasa Melayu.

Pada hari Isnin, Salmah menghantar laporan itu kepada Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka.

On Monday, Salmah sent the report to Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka.

Then check matched quotation marks and brackets, sentence-final punctuation, comma placement, and any abbreviation stops. Do not import an English possessive apostrophe: Malay writes laporan Salmah, not Salmah's laporan. In dialogue, keep the quoted words and the reporting clause visibly distinct according to the chosen Malaysian editorial style.

Finally, normalize dates, currency, percentages, measurements, and ranges. In continuous formal prose, 1 Januari 2027 is clearer than a locally ambiguous all-numeric date. Write the Malaysian currency symbol as RM, preserve the required decimal form, and use one house style consistently for units.

Yuran sebanyak RM25.50 perlu dibayar sebelum 1 Januari 2027.

A fee of RM25.50 must be paid before 1 January 2027. (formal)

These are editorial conventions rather than pronunciation rules. The numbers page gives the complete treatment.

Pass 10: make the register coherent

A grammatically correct text can still sound poorly edited if it jumps without purpose between formal administration, neutral prose, and intimate conversation. In a formal report, prefer forms such as memaklumkan, dilaksanakan, and berhubung dengan (formal) where their meanings fit; do not suddenly insert korang β€œyou all” (informal) or tak β€œnot” (informal).

Pihak urus setia memaklumkan bahawa program itu akan ditangguhkan.

The secretariat informs readers that the programme will be postponed. (formal)

Program itu ditunda sebab ramai tak dapat datang.

The programme was postponed because many people could not attend. (informal)

Both sentences can be natural in their own setting. The problem would be mixing their styles inside one official paragraph without a quoted speaker or another reason. Register editing is not a demand to make every text formal; it is a demand to match form to purpose and remain consistent.

A staged edit from flawed draft to final text

Here is a deliberately flawed paragraph. The errors are marked with ❌, but otherwise reproduced as an editor might receive them:

❌ Pada hari isnin, kedua dua pegawai itu pergi kepejabat baharu untuk menyemak draf laporan kerja sama antara jabatan. Laporan itu di tulis oleh setia usaha dan akan diemail kepada jawatan kuasa pada 1hb januari 2027. \"Kami bertanggung jawab untuk membaiki nya\", kata salmah.

Deliberately flawed draft for editing.

Stage 1: repair grammatical boundaries

Change kedua dua β†’ kedua-dua, kepejabat β†’ ke pejabat, di tulis β†’ ditulis, and membaiki nya β†’ membaikinya. These decisions use grammar: collective numeral, direction preposition, passive prefix, and object clitic.

Stage 2: repair compounds and national-standard forms

Change kerja sama β†’ kerjasama, setia usaha β†’ setiausaha, jawatan kuasa β†’ jawatankuasa, and bertanggung jawab β†’ bertanggungjawab. The rejected forms kerja sama and bertanggung jawab belong to the Indonesian standard; the intended document is Malaysian.

Replace diemail with dihantar melalui e-mel. This edit avoids an unstable hybrid and uses a transparent Malaysian phrase. The choice is lexical and editorial, not a claim that speakers never use a verb based on e-mel.

Stage 3: repair capitals, date style, and dialogue punctuation

Change isnin β†’ Isnin, januari β†’ Januari, and salmah β†’ Salmah. Replace compact 1hb januari 2027 with clear 1 Januari 2027 in this formal paragraph. Move the comma inside the closing quotation in the selected dialogue style: β€œ... membaikinya,” kata Salmah.

Clean final version

βœ… Pada hari Isnin, kedua-dua pegawai itu pergi ke pejabat baharu untuk menyemak draf laporan kerjasama antara jabatan. Laporan itu ditulis oleh setiausaha dan akan dihantar melalui e-mel kepada jawatankuasa pada 1 Januari 2027. \"Kami bertanggungjawab untuk membaikinya,\" kata Salmah.

On Monday, both officers went to the new office to review a draft report on interdepartmental cooperation. The report was written by the secretary and will be sent by email to the committee on 1 January 2027. β€˜We are responsible for improving it,’ Salmah said.

A staged edit creates an audit trail. Each change has a reasonβ€”grammar, lexical convention, national standard, typography, or registerβ€”rather than merely β€œlooking better”.

Common Mistakes

Trusting spellcheck with grammatical spacing

❌ Permohonan itu di hantar kepejabat daerah.

Incorrect β€” both boundaries require grammatical analysis.

βœ… Permohonan itu dihantar ke pejabat daerah.

The application was sent to the district office.

Joining every compound

❌ Landasan keretapi itu melintasi jalanraya utama.

Incorrect in current Malaysian spelling β€” both compounds are spaced.

βœ… Landasan kereta api itu melintasi jalan raya utama.

The railway line crosses the main road.

Accepting a neighboring standard without labeling it

❌ Aktivitas kerja sama itu bermula esok.

Incorrect for the intended Malaysian standard β€” aktivitas and kerja sama are Indonesian forms.

βœ… Aktiviti kerjasama itu bermula esok.

The cooperation activity begins tomorrow. (Malaysian standard)

Applying English capitalization to Malay

❌ Kursus Bahasa melayu bermula pada hari isnin.

Incorrect β€” capitalize the language name Melayu and the weekday Isnin.

βœ… Kursus bahasa Melayu bermula pada hari Isnin.

The Malay-language course begins on Monday.

Mixing formal and intimate register accidentally

❌ Pihak urus setia memaklumkan bahawa korang kena hadir.

This shifts abruptly from institutional phrasing to conversational korang kena.

βœ… Pihak urus setia memaklumkan bahawa semua peserta perlu hadir.

The secretariat informs readers that all participants must attend. (formal)

Key Takeaways

Edit boundaries before typography: ditulis di pejabat, kedua-dua, membaikinya. Verify compounds and the intended national standard: Malaysian kerjasama, bertanggungjawab, aktiviti. Then normalize capitals, punctuation, dates, money, and units, and finish with a register pass. Spellcheck supports this workflow but cannot replace grammatical and variety-specific judgment.
