Compounds: Separate, Solid, or Circumfixed in Malaysian Malay

Malay compounds do not all have one visual shape. Most ordinary compounds remain separate, a limited set of established compounds is written solidly, and a multiword base may close up when a circumfix embraces the compound as a whole. In Standard Malaysian Malay, the decisive questions are therefore lexical convention and affix scope, not simply whether two words express one idea.

This page addresses spelling. The dedicated compounding and morphology pages treat semantic relationships and derivational functions, while the editing page treats document-wide style.

Mereka menutup jalan raya itu selama dua jam.

They closed that main road for two hours.

Kerjasama antara kedua-dua jabatan itu semakin baik.

Cooperation between the two departments is improving.

Both jalan raya and kerjasama name unified concepts, but the first is conventionally spaced and the second is an established solid Malaysian form. Meaning alone cannot predict the boundary.

Most compounds are written as separate words

An ordinary compound combines words into a conventional phrase while preserving a space: jalan raya “main road”, kereta api “train”, alat tulis “stationery”, gambar rajah “diagram”, mata pelajaran “school subject”. The elements may have a specialized meaning together, yet they remain separate orthographic words.

Kereta api ke utara lewat setengah jam.

The northbound train is half an hour late.

Senarai alat tulis untuk bengkel itu sudah dihantar.

The list of stationery for the workshop has been sent.

Guru itu melukis gambar rajah pada papan putih.

The teacher drew a diagram on the whiteboard.

English compounds alternate unpredictably among spaces, hyphens, and solid spelling—compare bus stop, well-being, and notebook. That habit offers no safe shortcut for Malay. A learner must acquire a frequent Malay compound together with its Malaysian spelling.

Do not add a hyphen merely to signal semantic unity. The hyphen has other functions, especially exact reduplication: buku-buku, not jalan-raya. See hyphens in reduplication.

Ordinary Malay has no mandatory accent marks, and an accent cannot be used to classify a compound. Write the established spaces or solid form directly.

💡
A compound can be one lexical unit without being one orthographic word. Jalan raya is conceptually unified and graphically spaced.

Established solid compounds are lexicalized spellings

A limited group of compounds has become established as one written word in the Malaysian standard. Important examples include kerjasama, tanggungjawab, warganegara, kakitangan, jawatankuasa, setiausaha, antarabangsa, and sukarela.

Semua kakitangan diminta menghadiri taklimat keselamatan.

All staff members are asked to attend the safety briefing.

Jawatankuasa itu akan mengumumkan keputusan esok.

The committee will announce its decision tomorrow.

Syarikat itu mencari rakan kerjasama antarabangsa.

The company is seeking an international cooperation partner.

These spellings must be learned as lexical conventions. They are not evidence that every familiar combination should be joined. Kerjasama is solid, but rakan sekerja remains spaced; tanggungjawab is solid, but jalan raya remains spaced.

Once a compound is established as solid, ordinary affixes attach to that solid base: bekerjasama, kerjasamanya, bertanggungjawab, dipertanggungjawabkan, mempertanggungjawabkan.

Kita perlu bekerjasama untuk menyelesaikan masalah ini.

We need to work together to solve this problem.

Pengurus itu bertanggungjawab terhadap keselamatan pekerja.

The manager is responsible for worker safety.

Syarikat boleh mempertanggungjawabkan penyelia atas kecuaian itu.

The company can hold the supervisor accountable for that negligence. (formal)

In mempertanggungjawabkan, the length of the word is not a reason to insert spaces. Its Malaysian base tanggungjawab is already solid, and the attached verbal morphology preserves that spelling.

Malaysian and Indonesian conventions are not interchangeable

Closely related national standards sometimes choose different word boundaries. Standard Malaysian Malay uses kerjasama and bertanggungjawab. Standard Indonesian uses kerja sama and bertanggung jawab. Indonesian forms are not random misspellings; they are correct within the neighboring Indonesian standard. In a Malaysian guide, application, examination, or publication, however, use the Malaysian forms consistently.

Kerjasama pihak sekolah amat kami hargai.

We greatly appreciate the school's cooperation. (formal Malaysian standard)

Ketua projek bertanggungjawab menyediakan laporan akhir.

The project leader is responsible for preparing the final report. (Malaysian standard)

Mutual intelligibility can make this boundary easy to overlook, and a general-purpose spellchecker may accept material from both countries. National-standard choice is an editorial decision: identify the intended variety first, then follow its conventions throughout.

💡
Label kerja sama and bertanggung jawab as Indonesian when comparing standards; do not present them as informal Malaysian variants.

A prefix or suffix alone does not always close an ordinary compound

When only one affix is added to an ordinary multiword expression, the compound may retain its space. For example, kuat kuasa appears in berkuat kuasa “be in force”, and urus niaga appears in berurus niaga “conduct business”. The attached prefix joins its immediate written host, while the remaining compound boundary stays visible.

Peraturan baharu itu akan berkuat kuasa pada 1 Januari.

The new regulation will come into force on 1 January. (formal)

Syarikat itu tidak lagi berurus niaga di kawasan tersebut.

The company no longer conducts business in that area. (formal)

This pattern prevents a false rule such as “any affix makes every compound solid”. Affixation must be analyzed by its actual scope, and established dictionary spelling still matters.

A whole-compound circumfix closes the base up

When a prefix and suffix together embrace a compound as one derived base, Standard Malaysian spelling joins the elements. Compare kuat kuasa with menguatkuasakan “enforce/implement”, lipat ganda with melipatgandakan “multiply manyfold”, and anak tiri with menganaktirikan “treat as a stepchild; sideline”.

Pihak berkuasa akan menguatkuasakan larangan itu mulai esok.

The authorities will enforce the prohibition starting tomorrow. (formal)

Automasi dapat melipatgandakan jumlah pengeluaran.

Automation can multiply the volume of production manyfold.

Dasar itu tidak sepatutnya menganaktirikan masyarakat luar bandar.

That policy should not sideline rural communities. (formal)

The whole-compound analysis explains the spelling:

Base or constructionAffix patternFinished form
kuat kuasaprefix only in the established constructionberkuat kuasa
kuat kuasameN-...-kan around the compoundmenguatkuasakan
lipat gandameN-...-kan around the compoundmelipatgandakan
anak tirimeN-...-kan around the compoundmenganaktirikan

This is genuinely difficult because learners need both morphological analysis and lexical knowledge. There is no honest rule that derives every boundary from the English translation. Consult a current Malaysian dictionary or DBP reference when a low-frequency form matters in edited writing.

Do not confuse compounding with affix attachment

A simple derived word such as dibaiki is solid because ordinary prefixes and suffixes attach to a base; it is not a compound. Conversely, jalan raya remains spaced because it contains two lexical words and no whole-compound circumfix. Keeping these processes separate makes long forms less intimidating.

Jalan raya itu sedang dibaiki.

That main road is being repaired.

The sentence contains a spaced compound (jalan raya) and a solid derived verb (dibaiki). Neither boundary follows the number of words in English. Careful Malaysian grammar avoids the redundant formation diperbaiki here; use dibaiki for repairing something or diperbaik for improving it.

Common Mistakes

Joining every semantic unit

❌ Keretapi terakhir sudah bertolak.

Incorrect in the current Malaysian standard — kereta api is spaced.

✅ Kereta api terakhir sudah bertolak.

The last train has departed.

Spacing an established Malaysian compound

❌ Kerja sama anda amat kami hargai.

Incorrect for the intended Malaysian standard — kerja sama is the Indonesian spelling.

✅ Kerjasama anda amat kami hargai.

We greatly appreciate your cooperation. (formal Malaysian standard)

Importing an Indonesian boundary into a derived Malaysian form

❌ Penyelia itu bertanggung jawab atas keselamatan tapak.

Incorrect for Standard Malaysian Malay — the established base tanggungjawab is solid.

✅ Penyelia itu bertanggungjawab atas keselamatan tapak.

The supervisor is responsible for site safety.

Preserving spaces inside a whole-compound circumfix

❌ Agensi itu akan menguat kuasakan peraturan baharu.

Incorrect — meN-...-kan embraces the compound and closes it up.

✅ Agensi itu akan menguatkuasakan peraturan baharu.

The agency will enforce the new regulations. (formal)

Adding a compound hyphen

❌ Jalan-raya itu ditutup sementara.

Incorrect — an ordinary spaced compound does not take a hyphen.

✅ Jalan raya itu ditutup sementara.

The main road is temporarily closed.

Key Takeaways

Keep ordinary compounds spaced, as in jalan raya and kereta api. Learn established Malaysian solid forms such as kerjasama and tanggungjawab, preserving them in bekerjasama, bertanggungjawab, and mempertanggungjawabkan. When a circumfix embraces an ordinary compound as a whole, close the base up: menguatkuasakan. Mark kerja sama and bertanggung jawab explicitly as Indonesian rather than treating them as Malaysian alternatives.
