Changing-Sound Reduplication in Malaysian Malay

Malay has a vivid set of hyphenated forms in which the second member echoes the first while changing one or more sounds: sayur-mayur, lauk-pauk, gerak-gerik, and warna-warni. This is often called changing-sound, rhythmic, or rhyming reduplication (kata ganda berentak). It is not a rule that lets speakers freely invent a rhyming partner; it is a restricted expressive lexicon whose members and meanings must largely be learned.

English often needs phrases such as all sorts of, an assortment of, every twist and turn, or in utter disarray. Malay packages that breadth, variety, movement, or intensity into a memorable sound pattern.

For exact copying and its broader meaning range, begin with the reduplication overview; for spelling boundaries, see hyphens in Rumi.

An echo, not an exact copy

Full reduplication repeats the same base, as in buku-buku. Changing-sound reduplication preserves enough sound to signal a pair but alters consonants, vowels, or a larger portion of the form.

lintang-pukanglarger rhythmic alternationdisordered motion or arrangementhelter-skelter; in disarray

Mak membeli sayur-mayur segar untuk dimasak malam ini.

Mum bought assorted fresh vegetables to cook tonight. (neutral)

Meja bufet itu penuh dengan lauk-pauk tradisional dari Pantai Timur.

The buffet table was full of traditional East Coast dishes. (neutral)

Neither form merely counts identical objects. Sayur-mayur foregrounds an assortment of vegetables, while lauk-pauk evokes a spread with several kinds of dishes. A numeral answers “how many”; these forms answer something closer to “what varied range is present?”

💡
Changing-sound reduplication normally profiles breadth, mixture, movement, or expressive intensity. Do not reduce every form to ordinary grammatical plural marking.

Assortments and broad categories

Many noun-like forms gather unlike members under one category. The effect is often more expansive than exact full reduplication.

Peniaga itu menjual kuih-muih sejak awal pagi.

That vendor has been selling assorted traditional cakes since early morning. (neutral)

Saudara-mara datang dari Johor dan Perak untuk menghadiri majlis itu.

Relatives came from Johor and Perak to attend the ceremony. (neutral)

Kami dapat melihat gunung-ganang dari tingkap kereta api.

We could see mountain ranges from the train window. (neutral)

The members need not be identical tokens. Kuih-muih suggests several kinds of kuih; saudara-mara denotes the extended body of relatives; gunung-ganang presents a broad mountain landscape. Context still supplies exact number and boundaries.

Compare sayur-sayur itu “those vegetables,” which can point back to identifiable items, with sayur-mayur “assorted vegetables,” which categorizes a varied collection. The first is ordinary full reduplication; the second is a stored changing-sound form.

Sayur-sayur itu sudah dibasuh; sayur-mayur yang lain masih di dalam bakul.

Those vegetables have been washed; the other assorted vegetables are still in the basket. (neutral, contrastive)

Motion, appearance, and expressive force

Other forms present a scene as full of varied movements, colours, or disorder. Their sound pattern reinforces the semantic effect, which makes them common in description, journalism, and lively conversation.

Polis memerhatikan gerak-gerik suspek sebelum membuat tangkapan.

The police observed the suspect's movements before making an arrest. (formal/journalistic)

Current PRPM entries present gerak-geri as the headword, while Kamus Dewan also records gerak-gerik and gerak-garit as variants. This page uses the accepted gerak-gerik consistently; learners should also recognize the headword form gerak-geri. The expression refers to observable movements and, by extension, behaviour. Its echo gerik is not simply a freely interchangeable everyday synonym for gerak.

Hiasan warna-warni memenuhi ruang legar sempena sambutan itu.

Multicoloured decorations filled the foyer for the celebration. (neutral)

Apabila pintu dibuka, orang ramai berlari lintang-pukang mencari tempat berlindung.

When the door opened, the crowd ran helter-skelter looking for shelter. (neutral/journalistic)

Bilik stor itu masih kusut-masai selepas semua kotak dipindahkan.

The storeroom was still in a complete mess after all the boxes were moved. (neutral)

These are not semantically uniform. Warna-warni highlights colourful variety; lintang-pukang depicts chaotic directions; kusut-masai intensifies a tangled or disordered state. Their shared morphology does not produce one single compositional meaning.

The second member is often a bound echo

English-speaking learners naturally try to assign a separate dictionary translation to each side of a hyphen. That strategy fails for many changing-sound forms. Mayur in sayur-mayur does not function as the ordinary independent word “assortment,” and pauk is not normally substituted for lauk in a plain noun phrase. The pair is the lexical unit.

Kami menyediakan lauk-pauk untuk tetamu yang akan tiba tengah hari nanti.

We are preparing a range of dishes for the guests arriving at noon. (neutral)

You cannot preserve that meaning by saying pauk untuk tetamu or by reversing the pair to pauk-lauk. Fixed order, established echo, and conventional meaning belong together.

Dokumentari itu merakam warna-warni kehidupan di sebuah bandar pelabuhan.

The documentary captures the colourful variety of life in a port city. (literary/journalistic)

Here warna-warni is metaphorical, extending from literal colour to social variety. Such extensions are conventional enough to sound natural, but that does not make the pattern freely productive.

💡
Store the complete hyphenated expression in your vocabulary. Knowing sayur does not let you predict mayur, its order, or every meaning of sayur-mayur.

Restricted productivity and register

Speakers can play with rhyme in advertising, comedy, songs, and social media (informal/creative), but an improvised echo is wordplay, not automatically Standard Malay grammar. In (formal) or (academic) prose, use established dictionary forms and a plainer paraphrase when no conventional form exists.

Changing-sound forms themselves are not inherently childish or colloquial. Gerak-gerik suspek is at home in a formal report; warna-warni budaya occurs in journalistic and promotional prose; lauk-pauk is an ordinary neutral noun. Register comes from the particular word and context, not from rhyme alone.

Standard Rumi uses a hyphen in these morphological words. Write sayur-mayur, not sayur mayur and not sayur2. The digit shorthand can represent an exact copy in casual messages, but it cannot recover a changed partner: sayur2 expands to sayur-sayur, not sayur-mayur.

Common Mistakes

1. Treating the echo as an independent synonym

❌ Pauk itu sudah siap dihidangkan.

Incorrect for the intended meaning—pauk is not an ordinary standalone replacement for lauk here.

✅ Lauk-pauk itu sudah siap dihidangkan.

The various dishes are ready to be served. (neutral)

2. Replacing sound alternation with an exact copy

❌ Meja itu penuh dengan lauk-lauk tradisional dari seluruh negeri.

Possible only as ordinary full reduplication, but it loses the intended established expression for an assorted spread.

✅ Meja itu penuh dengan lauk-pauk tradisional dari seluruh negeri.

The table was full of assorted traditional dishes from across the state. (neutral)

3. Inventing a rhyming partner productively

❌ Kedai itu menjual buku-muku terpakai.

Incorrect—Malay has no standard changing-sound form buku-muku.

✅ Kedai itu menjual pelbagai buku terpakai.

That shop sells various used books. (neutral)

4. Removing the hyphen

❌ Polis memerhatikan gerak gerik suspek itu.

Incorrect standard spelling—the established reduplicative expression is hyphenated.

✅ Polis memerhatikan gerak-gerik suspek itu.

The police observed that suspect's movements. (formal)

Key Takeaways

Changing-sound reduplication links two rhythmically related members but does not copy them exactly. Its meanings cluster around assortment, category breadth, varied motion, appearance, and expressive intensity. Forms such as sayur-mayur, lauk-pauk, gerak-gerik, and warna-warni are established lexical units: learn their fixed order, spelling, register, and meaning as wholes, and keep the hyphen in edited Rumi.
