Affixes Around Full Reduplication in Malaysian Malay

An affix beside a repeated root does not automatically get repeated. The visible form depends on scope: Malay may copy a root and add an affix around the resulting unit, or it may copy an already derived word. Learning to see that hidden bracketing explains standard forms such as buku-bukunya, berjalan-jalan, and rumah-rumahan without memorizing them as punctuation accidents.

This page explains structure and spelling, not every meaning of ber-, ke-...-an, or -an. Those affix systems and the meanings of individual reduplicative patterns have dedicated pages.

The hyphen shows the repeated domain

In standard Rumi, full and changing-sound reduplication is hyphenated. An ordinary prefix is attached to the first written member, while a suffix or enclitic closes the second member when the affix has scope over the whole repeated unit. Spaces do not mark these internal boundaries.

StepNoun caseResult
Choose the basebuku “book”buku
Copy the base[buku + buku]buku-buku
Add the clitic outside[[buku + buku] + -nya]buku-bukunya

Buku-bukunya masih di dalam kotak kerana dia belum siap berpindah.

His books are still in the box because he has not finished moving. (neutral)

The clitic -nya attaches once to the complete reduplicated noun and identifies the whole set as associated with him, her, it, or the context. Buku-bukunya is not a shortened spelling of bukunya-bukunya. English puts a possessive before a plural noun; Malay instead puts the enclitic after the complete reduplicated form.

Saya sudah menyusun buku-buku di perpustakaannya.

I have arranged the books in his or her library. (neutral)

Here -nya attaches to perpustakaan, not to buku-buku. Position therefore matters: buku-bukunya means “his/her books,” whereas buku-buku di perpustakaannya means “the books in his/her library.”

💡
Read from the brackets outward. First form the repeated unit; then attach any suffix or enclitic whose meaning applies to that whole unit.

Prefix outside a repeated verbal root

Many familiar verbs repeat the root while a prefix appears only once. The stepwise analysis of berjalan-jalan is:

StepVerb caseResult
Choose the rootjalan “walk; road”jalan
Copy the root[jalan + jalan]jalan-jalan
Add the prefix outside[ber- + [jalan + jalan]]berjalan-jalan

Selepas makan malam, kami berjalan-jalan di sekitar dataran bandar.

After dinner, we took a stroll around the town square. (neutral)

The standard form is berjalan-jalan, not berjalan-berjalan. Its meaning is also not mechanically “walk twice”: berjalan-jalan conventionally presents relaxed walking about (neutral). Other prefixed iterative forms can describe an activity continued without a sharp endpoint.

Dia mengetuk-ngetuk pintu itu, tetapi tiada siapa menjawab.

He kept knocking on the door, but nobody answered. (neutral)

In mengetuk-ngetuk, the second member represents the root after the prefixed first member. The spelling preserves the established morphological pattern; learners should not generate it by chopping letters off an arbitrary meN- verb. The iterative-verb guide treats which forms are conventional and what repeated activity means.

Kanak-kanak itu berlari-lari di halaman sementara menunggu ibu bapa mereka.

The children ran about in the yard while waiting for their parents. (neutral)

The single ber- has scope over the copied root lari-lari. Copying the visible prefix twice would mistake the written pieces for the underlying structure.

Circumfixes can enclose a copied adjective

Approximate colour and property words show both edges of the structure. With kemerah-merahan, the root merah is copied, then ke-...-an encloses that copied material.

StepAdjective caseResult
Choose the adjectivemerah “red”merah
Copy the adjective[merah + merah]merah-merah
Enclose it[ke- + [merah + merah] + -an]kemerah-merahan

Langit di ufuk kelihatan kemerah-merahan sebelum matahari terbit.

The sky at the horizon looked reddish before sunrise. (neutral)

The circumfix is not copied on both halves. Semantically, kemerah-merahan means “somewhat reddish” or “resembling red,” not simply a plural form of merah. The construction is conventional and has lexical restrictions; it is not safe to wrap every English adjective in ke-...-an.

Gayanya kebarat-baratan, tetapi bahan yang digunakannya semuanya tempatan.

His style is rather Westernized, but all the materials he uses are local. (neutral; often carries speaker distance)

The same outer bracketing appears in kebarat-baratan. Because such forms can imply approximation, imitation, or criticism, morphology and stance must be learned together.

A suffix can derive a noun from a repeated base

The noun rumah-rumahan is built as [[rumah + rumah] + -an]. The suffix follows the second member because it applies to the repeated base as a whole.

StepDerived-noun caseResult
Choose the nounrumah “house”rumah
Copy the noun[rumah + rumah]rumah-rumah
Add the suffix[[rumah + rumah] + -an]rumah-rumahan

Mereka membina rumah-rumahan daripada kotak untuk pameran sekolah.

They built model houses out of boxes for the school exhibition. (neutral)

The form does not mean ordinary plural “houses”; it refers to house-like models or play structures. This is why simply counting visible copies is insufficient. A derivational affix can change the category or meaning of the complete construction.

Adik membuat kapal-kapalan daripada kertas terpakai.

My younger sibling made toy boats from used paper. (neutral)

Forms of this type are partly lexical. -an does not guarantee “toy version” after every copied noun, so check established usage rather than inventing a new form whenever English uses model or toy.

Sometimes the whole derived word is copied

The “affix only once” observation is not a universal deletion rule. If the discourse pluralizes an already derived lexeme, that entire lexeme can be the copy domain. Perubahan-perubahan contains perubahan twice because each member is the derived noun “change”:

[perubahan] + [perubahan] → perubahan-perubahan

Perubahan-perubahan kecil itu akhirnya mempercepat proses permohonan.

Those small changes eventually sped up the application process. (formal)

Compare this with berjalan-jalan, where only jalan is copied inside a single ber- construction. The difference is grammatical, not stylistic: one repeats a complete derived noun, while the other builds one verb around a copied root.

Cadangan-cadangan tersebut akan dibincangkan dalam mesyuarat esok.

Those proposals will be discussed at tomorrow's meeting. (formal)

In cadangan-cadangan, the suffix -an belongs to the lexical noun cadangan, so the whole noun is repeated. There is no dependable visual shortcut. Identify the intended lexeme and consult a dictionary when the derivation is unfamiliar.

💡
Ask “What is being repeated: the root, or the complete derived word?” Root copying often leaves an outer affix visible once; word copying repeats every part of that word.

Clitics close the complete construction

Possessive -ku, -mu, and -nya attach orthographically to the preceding word. When they refer to a reduplicated noun, write them once after the second member.

BracketingStandard formMeaning
[[kawan + kawan] + -ku]kawan-kawankumy friends
[[gambar + gambar] + -mu]gambar-gambarmuyour pictures
[[buku + buku] + -nya]buku-bukunyahis/her books; the books concerned

Kawan-kawanku sudah menunggu di lobi.

My friends are already waiting in the lobby. (neutral)

Gambar-gambarmu cantik, terutama yang diambil waktu senja.

Your pictures are beautiful, especially the ones taken at dusk. (neutral)

In formal edited prose, do not separate these clitics with a space and do not repeat them after both members. The enclitic has one host: the right edge of the complete reduplicated form.

Common Mistakes

1. Copying a prefix twice by sight

❌ Kami berjalan-berjalan di taman selepas makan.

Incorrect for the conventional verb—the prefix is not repeated.

✅ Kami berjalan-jalan di taman selepas makan.

We took a stroll in the park after eating. (neutral)

2. Putting a suffix on both copies

❌ Mereka membina rumahan-rumahan daripada kadbod.

Incorrect for model houses—the derivational suffix follows the complete copied base.

✅ Mereka membina rumah-rumahan daripada kadbod.

They built model houses out of cardboard. (neutral)

3. Repeating a possessive enclitic

❌ Bukunya-bukunya masih di dalam kotak.

Incorrect for ordinary ‘his books’—do not copy the possessed form with -nya on both members.

✅ Buku-bukunya masih di dalam kotak.

His books are still in the box. (neutral)

4. Applying the “one affix” pattern to a copied derived noun

❌ Perubah-perubahan itu akan dilaksanakan bulan depan.

Incorrect for ‘changes’—the two halves fail to copy the complete derived noun perubahan; perubah is a different lexeme.

✅ Perubahan-perubahan itu akan dilaksanakan bulan depan.

Those changes will be implemented next month. (formal)

Key Takeaways

Hyphenation makes reduplication visible, but bracketing determines what appears on each side. Berjalan-jalan and kemerah-merahan copy a root inside an outer affixal structure; rumah-rumahan adds -an to a copied base; buku-bukunya adds one enclitic at the right edge; and perubahan-perubahan copies a complete derived noun. Never copy or delete an affix by visual analogy alone.
