setiap, tiap, and tiap-tiap in Malaysian Malay

Setiap means “each” or “every” and distributes a statement over the individual members of a set: setiap pelajar means that the claim is true of one student, then the next, and so on throughout the relevant set. Tiap is a shorter variant common in recurring time expressions, while tiap-tiap makes the item-by-item reading especially explicit.

Setiap pelajar mesti membawa kad pengenalan.

Every student must bring an identity card.

Bas itu bertolak tiap hari pada pukul tujuh pagi.

The bus leaves every day at seven in the morning.

The three forms are part of contemporary Standard Malaysian Malay. Setiap is the safest neutral choice in conversation and writing. Tiap is concise and very natural with cycles such as tiap hari (neutral/informal), while tiap-tiap is more emphatically distributive and can sound deliberate or official (formal/emphatic).

Distribution over individuals

A universal statement can view a set in two ways. Semua pelajar berkumpul di dewan presents the students as the whole relevant membership gathered together. Setiap pelajar menerima sijil checks the result student by student: each individual received one. That distributive perspective is the central meaning of setiap.

Setiap peserta menerima satu nombor giliran.

Each participant receives a queue number.

Setiap rumah di kampung itu mempunyai tangki air.

Every house in that village has a water tank.

Semua pelajar berkumpul di hadapan perpustakaan.

All the students gathered in front of the library.

The difference becomes especially clear with predicates that naturally vary by individual. Setiap peserta menerima satu nombor suggests a separate number for each participant. Semua peserta menerima hadiah utama could mean the whole group received the main prize, and context must resolve whether the prize was shared or duplicated. A writer who needs the item-by-item interpretation should use setiap and state the distributed object clearly. The membership contrast is developed on the semua versus seluruh page.

English every and each overlap but differ in emphasis. Malay setiap covers both: it can make a general statement across a class, like every, or highlight one-by-one assignment, like each. Word order and context provide the emphasis; Malay does not require two different determiners.

💡
Imagine testing the sentence once for each member. If the claim must hold separately for member 1, member 2, member 3, and so on, setiap is the natural quantifier.

The noun normally stays singular in form

After setiap, the noun normally appears as an unreduplicated citation form: setiap pelajar, setiap rumah, setiap soalan. The set contains multiple potential members, but setiap selects them one at a time. Reduplicating the noun would conflict with that distributive packaging unless the repetition has some independent lexical meaning.

Sila jawab setiap soalan dengan lengkap.

Please answer every question fully.

Setiap pekerja diberi masa rehat selama satu jam.

Each worker is given a one-hour break.

English similarly uses singular morphology after every but usually plural morphology after all: every student versus all students. Malay nouns do not inflect for plural in the same way, yet the semantic contrast remains: setiap pelajar distributes; semua pelajar gathers the membership.

The following predicate need not be grammatically singular because Malay verbs do not agree with the subject. Setiap pekerja menerima... and semua pekerja menerima... use the same verb form menerima. Number and distribution are carried by the noun phrase, not by agreement on the verb.

tiap in recurring time expressions

Tiap is particularly common before a unit that recurs: tiap hari “every day,” tiap minggu “every week,” tiap kali “every time.” Each occurrence is treated as one member in a repeating series. Setiap hari is equally standard and often preferred in careful prose; tiap hari is compact and idiomatic in conversation.

Nenek berjalan kaki di taman tiap pagi.

Grandmother walks in the park every morning.

Setiap kali hujan lebat, jalan di hadapan kedai itu dinaiki air.

Every time it rains heavily, the road in front of that shop floods.

Mesyuarat itu diadakan pada hari Isnin minggu pertama setiap bulan.

The meeting is held on the Monday of the first week of every month.

This cyclic use is still distributive: the walking happens in each relevant morning, and the flooding is associated with each relevant occasion of heavy rain. It differs from a duration expression such as sepanjang hari “throughout the day,” which treats one day's extent as a whole.

In formal schedules, setiap hari bekerja “every working day” and pada setiap suku tahun “in each quarter” are common (formal). The preposition belongs to the larger time construction: pada setiap suku tahun, not to setiap itself.

tiap-tiap and explicit item-by-item emphasis

Tiap-tiap repeats the quantifier, not the following noun. It reinforces separate consideration of all members and often appears in regulations, careful instructions, or deliberate speech (formal/emphatic). It does not mean “some members here and there”; the repetition sharpens universality through distribution.

Tiap-tiap peserta perlu menandatangani senarai kehadiran.

Each and every participant must sign the attendance list.

Pegawai memeriksa tiap-tiap bilik sebelum bangunan dikunci.

The officer inspected each individual room before the building was locked.

The second sentence makes the room-by-room inspection salient. Neutral setiap bilik would still be correct and universal, but tiap-tiap bilik discourages a collective interpretation such as checking the building only in general. In casual speech, sustained use of tiap-tiap may sound insistent; setiap normally carries the needed meaning with less rhetorical weight.

Do not confuse grammatical repetition in tiap-tiap with noun reduplication. Write tiap-tiap peserta, not setiap peserta-peserta. The hyphen belongs inside the repeated quantifier.

💡
For a neutral default, choose setiap. Reserve tiap-tiap for a genuinely emphatic item-by-item reading, and expect concise tiap especially in recurring time expressions.

Distributed objects and masing-masing

When each member has a separate object, setiap can introduce the participants and masing-masing can reinforce the matching relation later in the clause. Masing-masing means “respectively / each in their own case”; it does not replace setiap in every noun phrase.

Setiap kumpulan membentangkan hasil kerja masing-masing.

Each group presents its own work.

Setiap anak membawa bekal masing-masing ke sekolah.

Each child brings their own packed meal to school.

The phrase hasil kerja masing-masing maps a distinct body of work to each group. Without masing-masing, context could still support that reading, but the correspondence is less explicit. Avoid redundant stacking where no separate possession or assignment exists: setiap peserta masing-masing hadir is clumsy for simple “every participant attended.”

Scope with negation

Negation can produce different meanings depending on whether the universal is inside or outside its scope. Bukan setiap permohonan diluluskan means “Not every application was approved”: at least one was not. Setiap permohonan tidak diluluskan is structurally possible but tends to be read as rejection applying one by one to all applications; the clearer collective denial is Tiada permohonan yang diluluskan “No application was approved.”

Bukan setiap pelanggan memerlukan resit bercetak.

Not every customer needs a printed receipt.

Tiada satu pun permohonan yang diluluskan pada pusingan pertama.

Not a single application was approved in the first round.

English speakers face a similar difference between not every and every ... not, but Malay makes clarity particularly important because verbs do not carry agreement and bare nouns can be number-neutral. Use contrastive bukan setiap—or the very common equivalent tidak semua—for the partial-negation meaning.

Common Mistakes

1. Reduplicating the noun after setiap

❌ Setiap pelajar-pelajar mesti hadir.

Incorrect — setiap already distributes over the students one by one.

✅ Setiap pelajar mesti hadir.

Every student must attend.

2. Using semua when individual assignment matters

❌ Semua setiap peserta menerima satu nombor.

Incorrect — do not stack the membership quantifier semua with distributive setiap.

✅ Setiap peserta menerima satu nombor yang berbeza.

Each participant receives a different number.

3. Repeating both the quantifier and the noun

❌ Tiap-tiap rumah-rumah diperiksa oleh pegawai itu.

Incorrect — repeat the quantifier for emphasis, not the noun.

✅ Tiap-tiap rumah diperiksa oleh pegawai itu.

Each and every house was inspected by the officer.

4. Confusing a recurring cycle with a whole duration

❌ Dia bekerja tiap malam tadi.

Incorrect for ‘She worked throughout last night’ — tiap malam means every night.

✅ Dia bekerja sepanjang malam tadi.

She worked throughout last night.

5. Misplacing partial negation

❌ Setiap cadangan tidak sesuai.

This tends toward ‘every proposal is unsuitable,’ not ‘not every proposal is suitable.’

✅ Bukan setiap cadangan sesuai untuk projek ini.

Not every proposal is suitable for this project.

Key Takeaways

Setiap distributes a claim over individual members and normally takes an unreduplicated noun: setiap pelajar. Shorter tiap is especially natural in cycles such as tiap hari, while tiap-tiap peserta adds item-by-item emphasis. Contrast this individual distribution with semua pelajar, which foregrounds complete membership as a set, and keep negation visible: bukan setiap means “not every.”
