The suffix -an does not contribute one fixed English meaning. It turns a base into a conventional nominal perspective on the situation: what the action produces, what undergoes it, what is used for it, where it is associated, or the action as a recognizable item. The base supplies the conceptual scene, while the lexicon selects which part of that scene the derived noun names.
This page maps that semantic network. For how the suffix is attached, see formation and allomorphy; for productivity, register, and competing nominalizers, see valency and lexicalization.
Four central root families
These families show why translating -an itself is impossible. The arrows represent derivation, not a sound change: the base remains intact and the actual word is written solid.
| Root family | Core scene | Conventional -an perspective |
|---|---|---|
| tulis → tulisan | someone writes | the resulting text, visible writing, or handwriting |
| makan → makanan | someone eats | what is eaten: food |
| main → mainan | someone plays | a thing used in play; sometimes something treated as a plaything |
| simpan → simpanan | someone keeps or saves something | what has been saved, kept, or reserved |
Tulisan pada papan tanda itu sudah pudar.
The writing on that signboard has faded.
Makanan yang tidak habis boleh disimpan di dalam peti sejuk.
Food that is not finished can be kept in the refrigerator.
Adik membawa mainan kegemarannya ke rumah nenek.
My younger sibling took their favourite toy to Grandmother's house.
Simpanan kecemasan kami cukup untuk perbelanjaan tiga bulan.
Our emergency savings are enough for three months of expenses.
The same English suffix cannot reproduce these four nouns. Writing, food, toy, and savings share no visible derivational ending. Malay makes their family resemblance more explicit, but the precise reading of each form is conventional.
Results and products
One central branch names a result made by performing the base action. Tulisan can be the text produced by writing, the marks visible on a surface, or a person’s handwriting. Lukisan, from lukis “draw; paint,” normally denotes a drawing or painting. Masakan, from masak “cook,” can denote cooked dishes or someone’s cooking.
Saya kenal tulisan Hakim walaupun namanya tidak tertera.
I recognize Hakim's handwriting even though his name is not shown.
Galeri itu mempamerkan lukisan pelukis tempatan.
The gallery is exhibiting paintings by local artists.
Masakan ibu saudara saya memang pedas, tetapi sedap.
My aunt's cooking is certainly spicy, but delicious.
The result relation can be physical or informational. A tulisan need not be a physical object; an online article can still be tulisan. What matters is that it is construed as an established output rather than merely the unfolding act of writing.
Patient-like things: what is eaten, drunk, or read
Another branch names the entity involved as the object of an activity. Makanan is what people eat, minuman is what they drink, and bacaan can be material read or a particular reading of a measurement or text. English distributes these meanings among unrelated nouns, compounds, and gerunds.
Harga makanan dan minuman tidak termasuk dalam yuran pendaftaran.
The price of food and drinks is not included in the registration fee.
Novel itu sesuai dijadikan bacaan ringan semasa bercuti.
That novel is suitable as light reading during a holiday.
Bacaan suhu pagi ini lebih rendah daripada semalam.
This morning's temperature reading is lower than yesterday's.
The two readings of bacaan illustrate polysemy. Both are connected with baca, but one names material for reading and another names a value obtained by reading an instrument. Context—not the suffix alone—selects the interpretation.
Instruments and things used for an activity
Some forms name an instrument or object associated with the base action. Mainan is a thing for play. Timbangan, related to timbang “weigh,” can refer to weighing scales or a weighing/consideration, depending on context. Acuan, from acu, is a mould, template, or pattern that gives something its form.
Peniaga itu memeriksa semula timbangannya sebelum membuka gerai.
The trader checked the weighing scales again before opening the stall.
Tuangkan adunan ke dalam acuan yang sudah disapu mentega.
Pour the batter into a mould that has already been greased with butter.
These meanings are lexicalized. -an does not mean “instrument” whenever it appears, and speakers do not create an instrument noun from every verb by attaching it.
Places and spatial domains
A smaller branch names a conventional place or spatial domain. Lapangan, historically transparent beside lapang “open; spacious,” denotes a field or domain, as in lapangan terbang “airport” and lapangan kajian “field of research.” Laluan, related to lalu “pass,” denotes a route, passage, or lane.
Laluan ke stesen ditutup sementara kerana kerja pembaikan.
The route to the station is temporarily closed for repair work.
Pesawat kami mendarat di lapangan terbang pada pukul enam.
Our plane landed at the airport at six o'clock.
These are not freely predictable “place where X happens” formations. Lapangan and laluan are established lexemes. Use them as vocabulary items inside the broader pattern.
Collections and sets
The derived noun can collect multiple items under one category. Barangan, from barang “item; goods,” commonly means goods or merchandise as a set. Muatan, related to muat “fit; contain/load,” denotes a load or contents carried. The singular-versus-collective interpretation comes from the lexical item and context, not from grammatical plural marking on -an.
Barangan elektrik di tingkat atas sedang dijual dengan harga promosi.
Electrical goods upstairs are being sold at promotional prices.
Pemandu lori itu memastikan muatannya diikat dengan kemas.
The lorry driver made sure his load was securely tied down.
Malay does not require a plural suffix here. Barangan can evoke a category or stock of goods without a numeral, while an individual item is normally barang or a more specific noun.
Action-related nouns without a single “action” rule
Some -an forms denote an organized action, occurrence, or action-related unit. Latihan, from latih “train,” can mean training or an exercise. Ujian, from uji “test,” denotes a test or trial. Lawatan, from lawat “visit,” denotes a visit, often as a planned event. These can look like English -ing or -tion nouns, but their meanings are individually conventional.
Latihan kebakaran akan diadakan selepas waktu rehat.
A fire drill will be held after the break.
Lawatan ke tapak projek itu ditangguhkan hingga minggu depan.
The visit to the project site was postponed until next week.
Keputusan ujian akan dihantar melalui e-mel.
The test results will be sent by email.
A parallel longer nominal may present the process more abstractly. For example, tulisan readily names a text or handwriting, whereas penulisan often names writing as a process, practice, or field (formal/academic). That contrast is strong but not perfectly mechanical; collocations and discourse determine the natural choice.
Polysemy is part of the system
A lexical family can extend metaphorically. Mainan literally denotes a toy, but menjadi mainan politik means “become a political plaything.” Simpanan can be money saved, a reserve player, stored material, or something held back. Tulisan can refer to handwriting, an inscription, an article, or written work more generally.
Isu keselamatan tidak sepatutnya dijadikan mainan politik.
Security issues should not be made into a political plaything. (formal)
Jurulatih memasukkan pemain simpanan pada separuh masa kedua.
The coach brought on a reserve player in the second half.
The suffix places these readings in one derivational neighbourhood, but it does not compute the exact meaning. English-speaking learners must resist replacing every -an with a single gloss such as “thing,” “result,” or “-ing.”
Common Mistakes
1. Translating every -an noun as an action in -ing.
❌ Adik meminta satu bermain untuk hari lahirnya.
Incorrect — mainan is the established noun for a toy; an English gerund cannot determine the Malay category.
✅ Adik meminta satu mainan untuk hari lahirnya.
My younger sibling asked for a toy for their birthday.
2. Assuming tulisan only means the activity “writing.”
❌ Tulisan pada dinding itu bermaksud aktiviti menulis.
Incorrect interpretation — here tulisan denotes the words or writing visible on the wall.
✅ Tulisan pada dinding itu sukar dibaca.
The writing on the wall is difficult to read.
3. Forcing a singular reading onto a collective noun.
❌ Saya membeli satu barangan untuk dapur.
Awkward — barangan normally presents goods collectively, not one countable item.
✅ Saya membeli beberapa barangan untuk dapur.
I bought several items for the kitchen.
4. Importing a derivative without checking Malaysian usage.
❌ Kami menunggu di parkiran hotel.
Regionally mismatched — parkiran is characteristic of Indonesian usage.
✅ Kami menunggu di tempat letak kereta hotel.
We waited in the hotel car park.
Key Takeaways
- -an packages a conventional result or participant from the scene evoked by its base.
- Major readings include products, patient-like things, instruments, places, collectives, and action-related nouns.
- One word can extend across several related senses: bacaan, tulisan, mainan, and simpanan are polysemous.
- The suffix is a semantic network, not a translatable unit with one English equivalent.
- Interpret the base, the collocation, and the context together, then verify unfamiliar Malaysian forms.
