English and Other Modern Loans in Jawi

Contemporary Jawi can write the vocabulary of computing, transport, medicine, and public administration. It does not achieve this through unrestricted phonetic improvisation. Malaysian terminology bodies and dictionaries stabilize spellings such as کومڤوتر komputer, تيکنولوݢي teknologi, and ۏيديو video, so competent writers check the accepted Malay word first and its Jawi form second.

Borrow the Malaysian word, not the English sound string

English loanwords usually enter Jawi through their established Malaysian Malay pronunciation and Rumi spelling. Thus English computer becomes Malay komputer, then Jawi کومڤوتر. Starting from an English accent may produce a plausible-looking sequence that is not the Malaysian word at all.

The (formal) standard form may coexist with casual pronunciations. A speaker who reduces a cluster or shifts /v/ toward another consonant has not thereby created a new spelling. Jawi, like Rumi, can preserve the lexical standard while speech varies.

Consonant clusters

Native Malay syllables strongly favour simple onsets, but modern loans contain clusters such as /skr/, /str/, and /tr/.
