Accurate conversion between Rumi and Jawi is linguistic analysis, not font conversion. Rumi shows Malay vowels relatively consistently; Jawi marks vowels selectively, makes morphology visible through established word shapes, and preserves etymological distinctions in many Arabic loans. The two directions are therefore asymmetric.
From Rumi to Jawi, you must choose a recognized lexical spelling rather than replace characters one by one. From Jawi to Rumi, you must restore vowels and sometimes select among genuine homographs. In both directions, sentence meaning is evidence—but it is never permission to rewrite what the source says.
A five-stage method
Use these stages for a word, sentence, or paragraph:
- Fix the source exactly. Preserve wording, punctuation, names, numbers, and any nonstandard form.
- Identify words and morphemes. Separate prepositions from prefixes and recognize affixes such as meN-, di-, and -an.
- Analyze syllables and lexical class. Note vowel-initial words, schwa, diphthongs, loans, and possible names.
- Select verified spellings or readings. Consult current Malaysian lexical data, especially for Arabic loans, final k, hamzah, names, and exceptions.
- Read the complete target in context. Confirm that joining, spacing, punctuation, grammar, and meaning still match the source.
A transliteration application can suggest candidates at stage 4, but it cannot replace the other stages. (formal) Publication work requires lexical verification and human contextual review. (informal) A quick message may tolerate variants, but the reader should not mistake them for standardized spellings.
Worked paragraph: Rumi to Jawi
Here is the Rumi source, retained exactly:
Pagi tadi saya pergi ke perpustakaan. Saya membaca buku bahasa Melayu dan menulis nama dalam Jawi. Selepas itu, saya pulang ke rumah.
Its contemporary Malaysian Jawi conversion is:

Notice that some decisions are phonological, some morphological, and some entirely lexical. No one substitution table could have supplied all of them.
The same paragraph: Jawi to Rumi
Now treat the Jawi paragraph as the source. Do not look at the Rumi line first. Segment spaces and punctuation, identify high-frequency shapes, then use morphology to restore underwritten vowels.
The sequence ممباچ begins with the familiar mem- shape and contains root باچ baca; that supports membaca, not an invented string mambaca. The sequence منوليس contains men- plus the recoverable family tulis → menulis. The bare shape سلڤس needs lexical knowledge to restore selepas, including two Rumi e letters that are not separately marked.
ساي ممباچ بوکو ايت.
Saya membaca buku itu.
I read that book / I am reading that book.
Jawi-to-Rumi conversion restores spelling, not English tense. Malay membaca has no tense ending; whether the situation is present or past needs wider context. A converter that chooses an English interpretation while producing Rumi has crossed from script conversion into translation.
Context resolves genuine ambiguity
The standard outline بوروڠ can support more than one Rumi reading, including burung “bird” and borong “wholesale/buy in bulk.” Syntax and collocation decide which word fits.
ديا ممبلي بوروڠ ايت د ڤاسر.
Dia membeli burung itu di pasar.
He/She bought that bird at the market.
After membeli and before demonstrative itu, the noun burung gives the natural reading. A converter should not resolve بوروڠ in isolation and then force that choice into every sentence. See the full homograph guide for a systematic context hierarchy.
Arabic loans create the reverse problem. Jawi may retain etymological letters that ordinary Malaysian pronunciation no longer distinguishes. In علمو ilmu, the initial ain belongs to the established spelling; the Rumi output remains ilmu, not a character-by-character transliteration with an apostrophe or Arabic pharyngeal symbol.

Variants, names, and source fidelity
When a source contains a documented historical spelling, record it before normalizing it. For example, older material or legacy software may encode Jawi ga with ڬ, while this guide uses contemporary ݢ in new text. A diplomatic transcription preserves the source character. A normalized edition may convert it, but its editorial note must say so.
Names require the same discipline. Ask the person or institution for its authorized spelling where possible. Sound alone may not reveal whether a name preserves an Arabic spelling, follows a family convention, or uses a modern loan pattern.

If a Rumi source says rumah itu besar but the intended meaning was “the school is large,” the accurate conversion still represents the words actually supplied. Correcting rumah to sekolah without a note is editing the message, not converting the script.
