Malay does not use one general verb for every situation covered by English work or study. Bekerja describes working as an activity or having employment; membuat kerja focuses on doing work; menyiapkan kerja focuses on completing it. In education, belajar places someone in the learner role, mempelajari takes the subject being studied as its object, and mengajar places someone in the teacher role.
Those contrasts matter more than memorizing a long office or school vocabulary list. This page gives the practical patterns needed for updates, plans, leave, permission, meetings, tests, assignments, and deadlines in standard Malaysian Malay.
Working, doing work, and finishing it
Bekerja normally describes the activity of working. It can answer where, when, or in what capacity someone works. It is not normally followed directly by a task as though it meant “do.”
Saya bekerja di sebuah syarikat perisian di Cyberjaya.
I work at a software company in Cyberjaya.
Kakak bekerja dari rumah setiap hari Jumaat.
My older sister works from home on Fridays.
Membuat kerja means “do work” or “work on tasks.” Here kerja is the thing being done. Menyiapkan kerja adds an endpoint: the work is brought to completion. Malay therefore makes a useful activity–task–completion distinction where English may repeat work.
Saya sedang membuat kerja, tetapi laporan itu belum siap.
I'm doing some work, but the report isn't finished yet.
Kami perlu menyiapkan kerja ini sebelum mesyuarat petang nanti.
We need to finish this work before this afternoon's meeting.
In an office update, Malay often omits an English-style subject once everyone knows who is reporting. In neutral professional speech, keeping saya is also entirely natural:
Saya sudah siapkan draf pertama dan sedang menyemak angka jualan.
I've finished the first draft and am checking the sales figures.
The shorter sudah siapkan is common in conversation. Telah menyiapkan is more typical (formal) in a written report: Pasukan kami telah menyiapkan draf pertama. Neither register is inherently more grammatical; the setting determines the choice.
Learning, studying, and teaching
Belajar means “learn” or “study” and presents the subject as a learner. It can occur alone or with the field being learned.
Saya belajar bahasa Melayu pada waktu malam.
I study Malay in the evenings.
Minggu ini kami akan belajar tentang perubahan iklim.
This week we're going to learn about climate change.
Mempelajari is transitive: it directs sustained attention toward an object, such as a theory, document, language, or process. It is common in careful explanation and (formal/academic) writing. In everyday class talk, belajar is often lighter and more natural.
Para pelajar sedang mempelajari kesan pencemaran terhadap sungai.
The students are studying the effects of pollution on rivers.
Mengajar means “teach.” Its subject is the teacher, not the learner. English learners sometimes confuse it with belajar because English learn and teach describe the same transfer of knowledge from opposite sides.
Cikgu Aina mengajar Matematik, tetapi beliau juga belajar bahasa Jepun.
Teacher Aina teaches Mathematics, but she is also learning Japanese.
Assignments, meetings, and tests
Tugasan is an assigned piece of work. At school or university it may be an assignment; at work it may be a duty or task. Kerja rumah is specifically homework. Mesyuarat is a meeting, while ujian is a test. Peperiksaan usually suggests a more substantial formal examination.
| Need | Natural expression | Focus |
|---|---|---|
| do an assignment | membuat tugasan | activity |
| complete an assignment | menyiapkan tugasan | completion |
| submit an assignment | menghantar tugasan | delivery to the teacher |
| attend a meeting | menghadiri mesyuarat | participation |
| sit/take a test | menduduki ujian (formal) / mengambil ujian | being tested |
A class plan may combine a deadline with a test:
Kita akan mengulang kaji Bab Tiga hari ini, menghantar tugasan pada hari Khamis, dan mengambil ujian pada hari Isnin.
We'll revise Chapter Three today, submit the assignment on Thursday, and take a test on Monday.
Mengulang kaji is the standard expression for reviewing material already learned. Avoid treating every English phrasal verb as though Malay needs a separate preposition.
For choosing clock times, weekdays, and calendar dates inside these plans, see time expressions.
Asking permission and requesting leave
Kebenaran means permission. In conversation, a boleh question usually performs the request more naturally than announcing Saya mahu kebenaran “I want permission.” Meminta kebenaran is neutral; memohon kebenaran is (formal) and suits letters or institutional requests.
Puan, boleh saya keluar awal hari ini untuk ke klinik?
Ma'am, may I leave early today to go to the clinic?
Cuti is leave or a holiday from work or study. Mengambil cuti means to take leave; memohon cuti means to apply for it. In a respectful request, give the relevant dates and a concise reason rather than relying on a single equivalent of English please.
Encik Razak, saya ingin memohon cuti pada 12 dan 13 Mei atas urusan keluarga.
Mr Razak, I would like to request leave on 12 and 13 May for a family matter.
Saya ingin... is a measured professional opening. Saya nak cuti esok is possible (informal) between people with an established casual relationship, but it can sound like an announcement rather than a request when addressed upward.
Deadlines and negotiating time
Tarikh akhir is a calendar deadline. Tempoh is the period of time allowed. Sebelum introduces a latest time in ordinary instructions, and selewat-lewatnya means “no later than.”
Tarikh akhir tugasan ini ialah 30 September, dan semua fail mesti dihantar selewat-lewatnya pada pukul lima petang.
The deadline for this assignment is 30 September, and all files must be submitted no later than five in the afternoon.
To negotiate, do not merely state that the deadline is impossible. Acknowledge it, give the constraint, and request a specific alternative. This mirrors the wider Malay preference for maintaining alignment before introducing a difficulty.
Saya faham tarikh akhirnya hari Jumaat, tetapi saya masih menunggu data daripada pihak kewangan. Bolehkah tempohnya dilanjutkan hingga hari Isnin?
I understand that the deadline is Friday, but I'm still waiting for data from Finance. Could the period be extended until Monday?
The passive dilanjutkan keeps the focus on the extension rather than telling the listener directly to extend it. Boleh saya hantar pada hari Isnin? is a simpler A2 alternative.
Common Mistakes
Using bekerja directly for a task
❌ Saya bekerja laporan itu sekarang.
Incorrect — bekerja describes working; it does not take laporan as a direct task object.
✅ Saya sedang menyiapkan laporan itu sekarang.
I'm finishing that report now.
Confusing the learner and teacher roles
❌ Saya mengajar bahasa Melayu setiap malam kerana saya pelajar baharu.
Incorrect intended meaning — mengajar says that I teach Malay.
✅ Saya belajar bahasa Melayu setiap malam kerana saya pelajar baharu.
I study Malay every night because I'm a new student.
Using belajar where a formal transitive verb is clearer
❌ Para penyelidik belajar perubahan corak pekerjaan.
Incorrect in this formal transitive pattern — belajar does not directly take the research object this way.
✅ Para penyelidik mempelajari perubahan corak pekerjaan.
The researchers study changes in employment patterns.
Announcing leave instead of requesting it
❌ Puan, saya mahu cuti dua hari.
Abrupt in this upward request — it presents leave as something wanted rather than permission being sought.
✅ Puan, saya ingin memohon cuti selama dua hari. Bolehkah Puan meluluskan permohonan saya?
Ma'am, I would like to request two days of leave. Could you approve my application?
Key Takeaways
- Bekerja, membuat kerja, and menyiapkan kerja profile activity, task, and completion respectively.
- Belajar identifies the learner role, mengajar the teacher role, and mempelajari a specific object of study.
- Use tugasan, mesyuarat, ujian, kebenaran, and cuti inside complete patterns rather than translating English phrases word by word.
- A natural leave or deadline request states the situation, asks permission, and proposes precise dates.
