English at, on, to, with, and even possessive constructions can correspond to pada or kepada, but Malay does not choose between them by asking only whether the following noun is human. Pada locates something at a time, in an abstract domain, or with a holder. Kepada presents a person or institution as a recipient, addressee, or target toward whom something is directed.
The most useful question is therefore: is anything being transferred, communicated, or directed to a recipient? If yes, choose kepada. If the person is merely the holder, source of an opinion, or one term in a dependency, pada can be correct even though that person is human. The dedicated pages on pada and kepada give their complete usage patterns.
The quick decision
| Meaning | Choose | Typical pattern |
|---|---|---|
| A point in time | pada | pada hari Isnin, pada pukul tiga |
| An abstract location or state | pada | pada tahap ini, bergantung pada |
| A person as holder or viewpoint | pada | ada pada saya, pada saya |
| A human recipient or addressee | kepada | berikan kepada guru, beritahu kepada mereka |
| A directed attitude or formal target | kepada | hormat kepada ibu bapa |
pada for time points
Use pada before a specific day, date, occasion, clock time, or stage (neutral/formal). In casual speech, it is often omitted where the time phrase is already clear, but careful prose retains it readily.
Mesyuarat itu akan diadakan pada hari Isnin.
The meeting will be held on Monday.
Kaunter ditutup pada pukul lima petang.
The counter closes at five in the afternoon.
With very general temporal nouns, Malay often uses the time phrase directly: hari ini, malam tadi, tahun depan. Do not insert pada mechanically before every expression translated with English on or at.
Saya akan hantar laporan itu esok, bukan minggu depan.
I'll send the report tomorrow, not next week.
Both esok and minggu depan are naturally bare here. In careful prose, pada minggu hadapan can locate an event within the coming week, but pada is not required merely because English uses next week as a time expression.
pada for abstract location and dependency
Pada can locate a fact, quality, responsibility, or change within an abstract point or domain. This use often appears in careful, academic, and administrative Malay.
Pada tahap ini, kita belum mempunyai bukti yang mencukupi.
At this stage, we do not yet have sufficient evidence.
Perbezaan utama terletak pada cara data itu dikumpulkan.
The main difference lies in the way the data was collected.
Several words conventionally select pada, including bergantung pada “depend on.” The object may be a person, but it is not a recipient.
Keputusan itu bergantung pada pertimbangan guru kelas.
That decision depends on the class teacher's judgment.
Although the following noun phrase refers to a person, bergantung establishes dependency, not transfer. Kepada guru kelas would be correct with a different verb if something were being sent or communicated to the teacher.
pada saya: viewpoint or holder
At the beginning of a clause, pada saya means “in my view” (neutral/careful). Menurut saya is another common careful option. Here saya is the source or locus of an opinion, not the recipient of a message.
Pada saya, cadangan kedua lebih mudah dilaksanakan.
In my opinion, the second proposal is easier to implement.
Pada also marks a person as the current holder or possessor of something, especially with ada. This is a relation of possession, availability, or custody.
Kunci bilik mesyuarat ada pada saya.
I have the meeting-room key with me.
Compare the recipient reading with kepada:
Pengurus menyerahkan kunci itu kepada saya sebelum pulang.
The manager handed the key to me before leaving.
The key moves kepada saya and is then pada saya. That two-stage picture—transfer followed by possession—is a reliable way to feel the distinction.
kepada for recipients and addressees
Use kepada when someone receives an object, payment, document, information, answer, or other directed act. It is particularly clear and frequent in careful and formal Malay.
Sila serahkan borang ini kepada guru kelas sebelum Jumaat.
Please submit this form to the class teacher before Friday.
Kami sudah menghantar keputusan itu kepada semua pemohon.
We have sent the decision to all applicants.
In everyday speech, kepada may be shortened to pada or omitted in some constructions (informal), especially after verbs whose recipient is obvious. The full form remains the safest choice in writing and whenever the recipient contrast matters.
Kepada also introduces an addressee or target of an attitude: loyalty, respect, trust, kindness, or responsibility can be oriented toward someone even when no physical object changes hands.
Dia sentiasa bersikap hormat kepada guru-gurunya.
He is always respectful toward his teachers.
Orang ramai diminta memberikan kerjasama kepada petugas kesihatan.
Members of the public are asked to cooperate with the health workers.
This directed-target use is common (formal), but collocation matters. Malay also uses other relators with particular words, such as terhadap for attitudes or actions viewed in relation to a target. A dictionary or the dedicated relator pages help with individual lexical patterns; the present decision remains recipient/direction versus location/relation.
Do not confuse kepada with ke
For an ordinary physical destination, use ke, not kepada: ke sekolah, ke Kuala Lumpur, ke pejabat. A person or organization can be a grammatical recipient with kepada, while a building or place is a destination with ke.
Aina pergi ke sekolah untuk menghantar surat kepada gurunya.
Aina went to school to deliver a letter to her teacher.
The school is the place reached; the teacher is the recipient. English uses to for both, but Malay exposes the difference.
Minimal contrasts to memorize
| Form | Meaning |
|---|---|
| pada hari Isnin | on Monday: time point |
| pada saya | in my opinion / in my possession |
| kepada saya | to me: recipient or target |
| kepada guru | to the teacher: recipient/addressee |
| bergantung pada guru | depend on the teacher: dependency |
Common Mistakes
Choosing kepada whenever the noun is human
❌ Keputusan itu bergantung kepada pengurus.
Nonstandard in careful Malaysian Malay: the manager is part of a dependency, not a recipient.
✅ Keputusan itu bergantung pada pengurus.
The decision depends on the manager.
Using a location relator for a recipient
❌ Sila berikan fail ini di guru kelas.
Incorrect: di marks a location and cannot introduce the teacher as recipient.
✅ Sila berikan fail ini kepada guru kelas.
Please give this file to the class teacher.
Confusing a holder with a recipient
❌ Dokumen asal masih kepada saya.
Incorrect: the document is currently in my possession, not moving toward me.
✅ Dokumen asal masih pada saya.
I still have the original document.
Using kepada for a physical destination
❌ Mereka bertolak kepada Johor Bahru pagi tadi.
Incorrect: Johor Bahru is a destination, not a recipient.
✅ Mereka bertolak ke Johor Bahru pagi tadi.
They left for Johor Bahru this morning.
Key Takeaways
Use pada for time points, abstract locations, dependencies, viewpoints, and holder relations. Use kepada when an act or attitude is directed toward a genuine recipient or target. A human noun does not automatically trigger kepada: pada saya and bergantung pada guru are central counterexamples. Ask whether there is an arrow of transfer or direction; if there is no arrow, pada or another relator may be the natural choice.
