kepada: Human Goals and Recipients in Malaysian Malay

The preposition kepada introduces a socially salient goal: a recipient, addressee, or person toward whom an attitude or action is directed. In memberikan hadiah kepada ibu “give a gift to mother,” the gift changes hands and ibu is the recipient. English often uses to for both places and people, but careful Malaysian Malay normally distinguishes destination ke from recipient kepada.

Saya memberikan hadiah itu kepada ibu selepas makan malam.

I gave the gift to my mother after dinner.

Kepada is one word. It is not written as ke pada, and it is not simply interchangeable with either ke or pada. Its grammar reflects the human and institutional relationships involved in communication, transfer, and directed feeling.

Recipients in acts of transfer

When a thing, document, message, or right moves from one participant to another, kepada marks the recipient. A common order is verb + thing transferred + kepada + recipient.

Pegawai itu menyerahkan laporan lengkap kepada pengarah pagi tadi.

The officer submitted the complete report to the director this morning. (formal)

Nadia meminjamkan payungnya kepada jiran sebelah.

Nadia lent her umbrella to the next-door neighbour.

Pihak sekolah mengagihkan komputer riba kepada murid yang layak.

The school distributed laptops to eligible pupils. (formal)

The theme comes first—laporan lengkap, payungnya, komputer riba—and the recipient follows kepada. This order is especially clear when either noun phrase is long. It lets Malay label the recipient explicitly instead of relying only on position, as English often does in give the director the report.

Institutions can function as recipients because people act through them. Menghantar aduan kepada kementerian “send a complaint to the ministry” does not imply that a building receives the complaint; the ministry is understood as an institutional addressee.

Kami menghantar salinan surat itu kepada kementerian untuk tindakan lanjut.

We sent a copy of the letter to the ministry for further action. (formal)

💡
With transfer verbs, identify the thing that moves and the participant that receives it. In the transparent pattern, put the thing first and introduce the recipient with kepada.

Addressees of speech and writing

Communication is a kind of transfer: words, questions, apologies, and information are directed toward an addressee. Kepada therefore appears with verbs such as bertanya “ask,” menjelaskan “explain,” mengadu “complain,” and menulis “write.”

Saya menulis surat kepada pengetua untuk memohon pertukaran kelas.

I wrote a letter to the principal to request a change of class.

Kalau arahan itu kurang jelas, tanyalah kepada penyelia.

If the instruction is unclear, ask the supervisor.

Jururawat itu menjelaskan prosedur tersebut kepada pesakit dengan tenang.

The nurse calmly explained the procedure to the patient.

In a formal letter or memorandum, Kepada: can label the addressee (formal). In the body of a sentence, however, it remains part of an ordinary prepositional phrase and is lowercase unless it begins the sentence.

Some communication verbs build the addressee directly into their object pattern. Standard Malay says memberitahu saya “tell me” and menasihati mereka “advise them,” without automatically adding kepada. A related derived verb may select the transparent pattern: memberitahukan keputusan itu kepada saya “communicate that decision to me” (formal). There is no safe rule that every English to becomes kepada; the verb’s valency still matters.

Apologies, thanks, and directed attitudes

An emotion or interpersonal stance can be oriented toward another person even when no object physically changes hands. Kepada marks this directed relation after expressions such as memohon maaf, berterima kasih, setia, and taat.

Saya ingin memohon maaf kepada semua penumpang atas kelewatan ini.

I would like to apologise to all passengers for this delay. (formal)

Kami berterima kasih kepada jiran-jiran yang datang membantu.

We are grateful to the neighbours who came to help.

Dia tetap setia kepada pasukannya walaupun menerima tawaran lain.

She remained loyal to her team despite receiving another offer.

Here the complement is not a destination. It is the participant toward whom the apology, gratitude, or conduct is directed. With broad policies or abstract targets, formal prose often uses terhadap instead: dasar terhadap pekerja asing “policy toward migrant workers.” Kepada is most natural when an actual interpersonal relation remains prominent.

kepada, ke, and pada

The forms overlap historically, but contemporary Standard Malaysian Malay gives them distinct core jobs.

RelatorCore relationExample
kephysical direction or destinationpergi ke klinik
kepadarecipient or socially directed goalbercakap kepada doktor
padatime point, holder, or abstract pointdokumen itu ada pada doktor

Saya pergi ke klinik lalu menyerahkan keputusan ujian itu kepada doktor.

I went to the clinic and gave the test results to the doctor.

Salinan asal masih ada pada doktor.

The original copy is still with the doctor.

The clinic is a destination, so it follows ke. The doctor receives the result, so the doctor follows kepada. In the second example, pada doktor presents the doctor as the current holder; no new transfer is asserted. See pada: time points and abstract location for this conceptual-location use.

English-speaking learners often overextend to: go to the doctor may describe a physical journey, a consultation, or an addressee relation. Malay makes the intended structure more explicit. For a visit, pergi berjumpa doktor “go to see a doctor” is often clearer than forcing either preposition before the person.

💡
Use ke for where a body moves, kepada for whom a transfer or message reaches, and pada for the point or holder at which something is located.

When kepada can be absent

The recipient role does not always require an overt kepada phrase. Some verbs permit a recipient immediately after the verb, especially memberi “give.” Compare two Standard Malay patterns:

Pak cik memberi saya sebuah buku tentang sejarah Melaka.

My uncle gave me a book about the history of Melaka.

Pak cik memberikan sebuah buku tentang sejarah Melaka kepada saya.

My uncle gave a book about the history of Melaka to me.

In the first pattern, saya is the direct recipient immediately after memberi. In the second, the transferred object comes first and kepada saya explicitly labels the recipient. The longer second pattern is often easier to process when the theme contains several words.

Pronouns may also be recoverable from context in casual speech: Sudah beri? “Have you given it [to them]?” (informal). That omission depends on shared context; it does not make kepada optional everywhere. With verbs that require a clearly marked addressee, deleting it can change the structure or leave the reader asking who received the action.

Do not confuse omission with replacement by ke. A casual speaker may shorten a whole phrase, but careful prose does not use ke pengarah to mark the recipient of a report. Retain kepada pengarah, or choose a verb frame that takes the recipient directly.

kepada versus untuk

Kepada identifies the actual receiver or target of an action. Untuk identifies an intended beneficiary, purpose, or intended user. The intended beneficiary need not physically receive anything yet.

Saya menyerahkan hadiah itu kepada ibu.

I handed the gift to my mother.

Saya membeli hadiah itu untuk ibu.

I bought the gift for my mother.

The first sentence asserts transfer to mother. The second states whose benefit the purchase serves; someone else might still carry or receive the package. This recipient–beneficiary distinction is more informative than treating both words as translations of English for/to. See untuk: beneficiary and purpose.

Common Mistakes

1. Using ke for a human recipient

❌ Pegawai itu menyerahkan laporan ke pengarah.

Incorrect in careful prose—the director is the recipient, not a physical destination.

✅ Pegawai itu menyerahkan laporan kepada pengarah.

The officer submitted the report to the director. (formal)

2. Splitting kepada into two words

❌ Saya sudah meminta maaf ke pada jiran saya.

Incorrect spelling—kepada is one preposition.

✅ Saya sudah meminta maaf kepada jiran saya.

I have apologised to my neighbour.

3. Using kepada for a physical destination

❌ Kami menaiki bas kepada Kuala Lumpur.

Incorrect—the city is the destination of movement.

✅ Kami menaiki bas ke Kuala Lumpur.

We took a bus to Kuala Lumpur.

4. Confusing recipient with current holder

❌ Kunci pejabat masih kepada penyelia.

Incorrect for current possession—no transfer toward the supervisor is being asserted.

✅ Kunci pejabat masih pada penyelia.

The office key is still with the supervisor.

5. Adding kepada to a verb that directly selects its addressee

❌ Pengurus memberitahu kepada kami bahawa pejabat akan ditutup.

Nonstandard in this frame—memberitahu takes the informed person directly.

✅ Pengurus memberitahu kami bahawa pejabat akan ditutup.

The manager told us that the office would be closed.

Key Takeaways

Use kepada for a recipient, addressee, or socially directed target: a gift kepada ibu, a report kepada pengarah, an apology kepada penumpang, or a letter kepada pengetua. Use ke for physical destinations and pada for holders or conceptual points. Kepada can be absent only when the verb’s own argument pattern or context licenses that omission; it is never written as two words.
