Clitic Placement and Host Choice

Indonesian clitics are short bound forms that need a neighboring host. Their side of attachment is grammatical: actor ku- and kau- precede a verb in a compact object-voice construction, while -ku, -mu, and -nya follow nouns, verbs, or prepositions. English pronouns are independent words, so translating English word order mechanically gives the wrong Indonesian construction.

This page uses attachment as a guide to clitic order and host choice. It does not provide full voice paradigms or survey the meanings of discourse particles.

Two attachment zones

FormSideTypical roleRunning-text spelling
ku-, kau-before a verbactor in object voicekubaca, kaulihat
-ku, -mu, -nyaafter a hostpossessor, object, or prepositional complementbukuku, melihatmu, kepadanya

Pesan itu kubaca saat menunggu kereta.

I read that message while waiting for the train.

Kesalahan kecil itu kaulihat lebih dulu.

You noticed that small error first.

Bukunya masih tertinggal di meja resepsionis.

His, her, or their book is still on the reception desk.

Saya melihatmu keluar dari perpustakaan tadi.

I saw you leave the library earlier.

The hyphens in labels such as ku- and -nya show which side is bound. Ordinary words are solid. A full pronoun remains separate: saya baca, kamu lihat, buku saya, and kepada mereka.

💡
Attachment side is a diagnostic. Before the verb, ku- normally identifies the actor of an object-focused event; after a verb, -ku is its object: kubantu “I help” versus membantuku “help me.”

Preverbal ku- and kau-

The actor proclitics ku- “I” and kau- “you” attach to a following verb, most characteristically when a topical patient comes first. The basic verb lacks actor-voice meN-.

Artikel itu kubaca dua kali sebelum rapat.

I read that article twice before the meeting.

Foto mana yang kaupilih untuk sampulnya?

Which photo did you choose for the cover?

Kabar itu kusampaikan langsung kepada keluarganya.

I conveyed the news directly to the family.

Semua pintu sudah kaukunci sebelum pergi?

Did you lock all the doors before leaving?

Do not treat these as freely shortened versions of aku and engkau. Ku- and kau- occupy a construction-specific actor position and form a tight unit with the verb. Thus kubaca is not spelled ku baca or ku-baca. With a full actor, use separate saya baca or kamu baca.

In contemporary conversation, full saya/kamu is often more neutral. Bound ku- is common in personal prose, messages, and narrative (informal; literary). Bound kau- can sound intimate, forceful, or literary depending on the relationship (informal; literary).

Post-host -ku, -mu, and -nya

Enclitics attach after the word that licenses their role. A noun hosts a possessor, a transitive verb hosts an object, and a preposition hosts its complement.

Host typeExampleRole of clitic
nounjadwalkumy schedule
verbmenunggumuwait for you
prepositionuntuknyafor him/her/them

Jadwalku berubah karena penerbangan dibatalkan.

My schedule changed because the flight was canceled.

Kami menunggumu di pintu masuk utama.

We are waiting for you at the main entrance.

Saya sudah menyiapkan tempat untuknya di depan.

I have prepared a place for him, her, or them at the front.

Mereka mengirimkan salinannya kepadamu kemarin.

They sent you the copy yesterday.

The same spelling can therefore have different interpretations. In bukunya, -nya follows a noun and may be possessive. In membacanya, it follows a verb and is normally the object “read it.” In kepadanya, the preposition hosts its complement. The host and clause structure narrow the meaning before context resolves the reference.

Aspect and modality precede the object-voice actor

In object voice with a pronominal actor, aspect, negation, and modal markers normally come before the actor–verb unit:

PatientMarkerActor + verb
laporan ituakansaya baca
pesan inisudahkubalas
masalah tersebutharuskita bahas

Laporan lengkap itu akan saya baca malam ini.

I will read that complete report tonight.

Pesan terakhirmu sudah kubalas dari bandara.

I replied to your last message from the airport.

Bagian ini belum kaurevisi sesuai catatan editor.

You have not yet revised this section according to the editor's notes.

Masalah biaya harus kami jelaskan kepada semua peserta.

We must explain the cost issue to all participants.

This order keeps the actor immediately beside the bare verb. Laporan itu saya akan baca occurs in some speech as a marked sequence, but it is not the neutral pattern being taught here. For edited standard Indonesian, use akan saya baca. Full contrasts among voices belong in the voice-order guide.

What “clitic stacking” really looks like

Indonesian often layers a derivational suffix and an enclitic on one verb, while another clitic attaches to a following preposition. In memberikannya kepadaku, the verb is memberi + -kan + -nya, and -ku attaches separately to kepada.

Rina memberikannya kepadaku setelah acara selesai.

Rina gave it to me after the event ended.

Saya akan mengirimkannya kepadamu lewat kurir.

I will send it to you by courier.

Tolong bacakan pesannya untukku sekali lagi.

Please read the message aloud for me once more.

Mereka memperlihatkannya kepada kami secara bergantian.

They showed it to us one by one.

The order reflects morphological layers: verb base, derivational ending such as -kan, then object -nya. Write mengirimkannya, not mengirimnyakan. The recipient clitic belongs on its preposition: kepadaku, kepadamu, kepada kami. Indonesian does not productively pile several personal clitics into one cluster equivalent to Spanish dámelo. A form such as memberikankunya is not a standard way to say “give it to me.”

💡
Find each clitic's host before spelling the sentence. In mengirimkannya kepadamu, “it” belongs to the verb and “to you” belongs to the preposition, so they attach in two different places.

Host choice can change the construction

Compare the same first-person reference on opposite sides of a verb:

Catatan itu kusimpan di laci terkunci.

I keep that note in a locked drawer.

Petugas itu mengenalku dari foto lama.

That officer recognized me from an old photo.

In kusimpan, ku- is actor. In mengenalku, -ku is object. Likewise, bukumu makes “you” possessor, while untukmu makes “you” the complement of “for.” English places “I/me/my” as separate words; Indonesian uses attachment side to encode these differences.

Kopimu sudah dingin, jadi kubuatkan yang baru.

Your coffee is cold, so I will make you a new one.

Mereka tidak memberitahuku tentang perubahan jadwal.

They did not tell me about the schedule change.

With abbreviations and unusual hosts, EYD V may require a hyphen, as in KTP-nya or PDF-nya. That orthographic exception does not make the ordinary spellings buku-nya or baca-ku correct.

Common Mistakes

1. Placing ku- as an independent English-style pronoun

❌ Dokumen itu ku baca setelah makan siang.

Incorrect spelling — actor ku- attaches to the verb.

✅ Dokumen itu kubaca setelah makan siang bersama tim.

I read that document after having lunch with the team.

2. Retaining meN- after a proclitic actor

❌ Surat itu kumengirim tadi pagi.

Incorrect object-voice form — use the basic verb after ku-.

✅ Surat itu kukirim tadi pagi sebelum berangkat.

I sent that letter this morning before leaving.

3. Putting aspect between actor and verb

❌ Artikel ini ku sudah baca seluruhnya.

Incorrect neutral order — sudah precedes the attached actor–verb unit.

✅ Artikel ini sudah kubaca seluruhnya di perjalanan.

I read this entire article on the way.

4. Attaching an enclitic to the wrong host

❌ Mereka memberikan kepadaku-nya sore tadi.

Incorrect — object -nya belongs on the verb, not after the recipient phrase.

✅ Mereka memberikannya kepadaku sore tadi di kantor.

They gave it to me at the office late this afternoon.

5. Putting an object clitic inside a derivational suffix

❌ Saya mengirimnyakan kepada Dita besok.

Incorrect suffix order — derivational -kan comes before object -nya.

✅ Saya akan mengirimkannya kepada Dita besok pagi.

I will send it to Dita tomorrow morning.

Key Takeaways

  • Attach actor ku-/kau- before a verb: kubaca, kaulihat.
  • Attach -ku/-mu/-nya after the noun, verb, or preposition that hosts it.
  • In neutral object voice, markers precede the actor–verb unit: akan saya baca, sudah kubaca.
  • In memberikannya kepadaku, each clitic occupies the host licensed by its grammatical role.
  • Attachment side is meaningful syntax, not merely a pronunciation shortcut.
