ber-...-an: Meanings and Derivational Network

The circumfix ber-...-an commonly expands an event across participants, occurrences, or space. It can mark reciprocal action (bersalaman), mutual pursuit (berkejaran), arrivals distributed over time (berdatangan), or many falling events (berjatuhan). The central insight is plurality without an obligatory numeral: the verb can imply a participant set or a series of events even when the noun itself is not reduplicated. For the spelling patterns behind these forms, see ber-...-an formation and allomorphy.

One expansion schema, four recurrent readings

The root supplies the event or relation. Ber-...-an presents that event as extending beyond one simple actor–occurrence pair:

  1. Reciprocal: participants direct the action toward one another.
  2. Distributed: multiple participants perform related events across time or space.
  3. Repeated: the event occurs in a series or over multiple subparts.
  4. Spatially scattered: participants move or appear in different directions or locations.

These readings overlap. Children who berkejaran both act reciprocally and move around; leaves that berjatuhan fall in multiple events and become spatially dispersed.

Para tamu bersalaman sebelum memasuki ruang rapat.

The guests shake hands before entering the meeting room.

Anak-anak berkejaran di lapangan.

The children chase one another around the field.

Pengunjung berdatangan sepanjang sore.

Visitors arrived throughout the afternoon.

Buah mangga berjatuhan setelah hujan deras.

Mangoes fell one after another after the heavy rain.

💡
Do not translate the circumfix first. Ask what is multiplied: reciprocal participants, separate event occurrences, affected subparts, or spatial paths.

Rina bersalaman dengan kepala desa setelah acara.

Rina shook hands with the village head after the event.

Dua anak kucing berkejaran mengelilingi sofa.

Two kittens chased each other around the sofa.

Bantuan mulai berdatangan dari berbagai daerah.

Aid began arriving from various regions.

Kelopak bunga berjatuhan di atas meja.

Flower petals fell one after another onto the table.

The form does not specify an exact number. Berdatangan can describe five arrivals or five hundred; modifiers and context supply the scale.

Reciprocal events

A plural subject contains both sides

With mereka, kedua sahabat, or another plural/coordinate subject, the participant set can be contained entirely in the subject. Mereka bersalaman means members of that set exchange handshakes; kedua sahabat berpelukan means each embraces the other.

Kedua calon bersalaman setelah debat berakhir.

The two candidates shook hands after the debate ended.

Para pemain berpelukan setelah pertandingan.

The players hugged one another after the match.

Kedua saksi berpandangan sejenak tanpa berkata apa-apa.

The two witnesses exchanged glances briefly without saying anything.

Reciprocity need not mean perfectly symmetrical physical action at every instant. It construes the event as shared across the participant set.

One participant in the subject, the other with dengan

A grammatically singular subject is possible when the partner appears in a dengan phrase. Rina bersalaman dengan Dodi still contains two semantic participants; they are simply distributed between subject and complement.

Saya bersalaman dengan pembicara setelah seminar.

I shook hands with the speaker after the seminar.

Anak itu berpelukan dengan ibunya di stasiun.

The child hugged his mother at the station.

Rumah kami bersebelahan dengan kantor pos.

Our house is next to the post office.

English often uses each other with a plural subject but uses an ordinary transitive verb with a singular subject: “I hugged my mother.” Indonesian can retain the reciprocal/relational verb and express the partner with dengan.

Competition with saling and reduplication

Saling + active verb is another productive reciprocal strategy: mereka saling menyapa. Bersapaan packages the reciprocal relationship inside the verb. Reduplicated forms such as bersalam-salaman or berkejar-kejaran can add iterative, playful, or emphatic force, but they are separate constructions.

Para tetangga saling menyapa setiap pagi.

The neighbors greet one another every morning.

Para tetangga bersapaan setiap pagi.

The neighbors exchange greetings every morning.

Anak-anak berkejar-kejaran sampai kelelahan.

The children chased one another around until they were exhausted.

There is no need to pile every reciprocal marker into one clause. Choose the established verb and add reduplication or saling only when its discourse nuance is useful.

Distributed arrivals, appearances, and movements

With motion or emergence bases, the circumfix often distributes events across multiple participants or paths. Berdatangan depicts a stream of arrivals rather than a single punctual arrival. Bermunculan depicts multiple appearances, and berlarian depicts runners moving around or in different directions.

Tamu undangan berdatangan sejak sore.

Invited guests began arriving from the afternoon onward.

Warung baru bermunculan di sekitar stasiun.

New food stalls are popping up around the station.

Orang-orang berlarian ketika alarm berbunyi.

People ran in different directions when the alarm sounded.

Burung beterbangan rendah sebelum hujan.

Birds were flying around low before the rain.

The subject noun may be morphologically unmarked: tamu berdatangan already supports a plural or collective reading. Reduplication remains possible for emphasis or individuation, but it is not required by agreement; Indonesian verbs do not agree in number.

Tamu berdatangan satu per satu.

Guests arrived one by one.

Burung-burung beterbangan di atas pohon yang tumbang.

Birds were flying around above the fallen tree.

The second sentence uses noun reduplication because the speaker explicitly presents multiple individual birds. The first leaves tamu unreduplicated while the verb and satu per satu make plurality clear.

💡
Verbal plurality is not agreement. Berdatangan contributes a distributed-event construal; it does not mechanically force the subject noun to carry plural morphology.

Repeated events and affected subparts

Berjatuhan presents multiple falling occurrences, often across several entities. Berlompatan can describe repeated jumps by one or more participants, while bersahutan presents calls or sounds answering across sources.

Air mata berjatuhan di pipinya.

Tears fell one after another down her cheeks.

Anak-anak berlompatan kegirangan saat pemenang diumumkan.

The children jumped up and down with joy when the winner was announced.

Suara burung bersahutan dari kedua sisi sungai.

Bird calls answered one another from both sides of the river.

Bintang berjatuhan tampak jelas jauh dari cahaya kota.

Falling stars are clearly visible far from the city lights.

A single lexical subject can contain multiple affected parts or tokens: air mata consists of drops; suara burung can arise from multiple birds or calls. Context, not a numeral encoded in the circumfix, identifies the participants.

Spatial and social relations

Property and noun bases can form symmetric or distributed relations: berdekatan “be near one another,” berjauhan “be far apart,” bersebelahan “be side by side,” berseberangan “be opposite/across from one another,” and bermusuhan “be enemies.”

Ketiga toko itu berdekatan.

The three shops are close to one another.

Kedua desa berjauhan, tetapi dihubungkan oleh jalan yang baik.

The two villages are far apart but connected by a good road.

Rumah sakit dan kantor kecamatan berseberangan.

The hospital and the district office are opposite each other.

Kedua keluarga sudah lama bermusuhan.

The two families have been enemies for a long time.

The relation may also connect a singular subject with a dengan complement: kantor berseberangan dengan rumah sakit. Once again, semantic plurality can be split across syntactic constituents.

Polysemy and lexicalized readings

Some forms extend beyond the core expansion schema. Bepergian simply means travel or be away traveling and readily takes a singular subject: saya bepergian sendiri. It does not require several travelers or repeated trips. Bersamaan can mean simultaneous or together; berhadapan can mean physically face one another, be opposite, or confront a problem.

Saya akan bepergian sendiri selama tiga hari.

I will be traveling alone for three days.

Kedua kereta tiba hampir bersamaan.

The two trains arrived almost simultaneously.

Meja resepsionis berhadapan dengan pintu masuk.

The reception desk faces the entrance.

Tim kecil itu berhadapan dengan masalah yang rumit.

That small team is facing a complex problem.

Berpandangan can mean exchange glances in mereka berpandangan, but berpandangan bahwa... means hold the view that—a lexicalized opinion frame.

Sebagian ahli berpandangan bahwa kebijakan itu perlu ditinjau ulang.

Some experts hold the view that the policy needs review. (academic)

These cases make productivity honest rather than chaotic: a living schema motivates meanings, while frequent words acquire conventional frames that must be stored.

No single English translation

English translates this network with each other, around, one after another, in succession, all over, together, or a simple lexical verb. None is the meaning of the circumfix by itself.

Daun berjatuhan sepanjang malam.

Leaves kept falling throughout the night.

Para alumni berdatangan dari berbagai kota.

Alumni arrived from various cities.

Kedua saudara itu bersalaman dengan canggung.

The two siblings shook hands awkwardly.

Translate the event naturally only after identifying which dimension—participants, occurrences, or spatial distribution—has expanded.

Common Mistakes

Adding a direct object to an intransitive reciprocal verb

❌ Anak-anak berkejaran bola di halaman.

Incorrect — berkejaran is intransitive and does not take bola as a chased object.

✅ Anak-anak mengejar bola di halaman.

The children chase the ball in the yard.

✅ Anak-anak berkejaran di halaman.

The children chase one another around the yard.

Omitting dengan when the partner is outside the subject

❌ Dedi bersalaman kepala desa setelah acara.

Incorrect — a separately expressed partner follows dengan.

✅ Dedi bersalaman dengan kepala desa setelah acara.

Dedi shook hands with the village head after the event.

Reading every form as reciprocal

❌ Daun berjatuhan berarti daun-daun saling menjatuhkan.

Incorrect interpretation — the leaves undergo multiple falling events; they do not make one another fall.

✅ Daun kering berjatuhan tertiup angin.

Dry leaves fell one after another in the wind.

Using a distributed verb for one punctual participant

❌ Seorang tamu berdatangan tepat pukul delapan.

Incorrect for one single arrival — berdatangan presents a distributed series.

✅ Seorang tamu datang tepat pukul delapan.

One guest arrived at exactly eight.

Assuming every ber-...-an form requires a plural subject

❌ Bepergian hanya dapat digunakan dengan subjek jamak.

Incorrect generalization — lexicalized bepergian can have one traveler.

✅ Saya sering bepergian sendiri untuk bekerja.

I often travel alone for work.

Key Takeaways

  • Ber-...-an can expand a base event across reciprocal participants, distributed occurrences, repeated actions, or spatial paths.
  • The circumfix can imply plurality without a numeral or noun reduplication, but it is not a number-agreement marker.
  • A reciprocal participant set may be wholly in a plural subject or split between a singular subject and dengan complement.
  • Not every form is reciprocal: berdatangan and berjatuhan are primarily distributed/repeated.
  • Lexicalized bepergian, bersamaan, berhadapan, and berpandangan bahwa require their own frames and translations.
