Indonesian has two central ways to express English each other or one another. Saling occurs before a verb and builds reciprocity into the predicate, while satu sama lain is a noun-like reciprocal phrase placed where an object or prepositional complement can occur.
The difference is structural, not just stylistic. Saling changes how the verb realizes its participants: the members of a plural subject act on one another, so the reciprocal participant is no longer stated as an ordinary object. This page leaves demonstratives, full relative-clause syntax, and voice paradigms to dedicated adjacent pages; other reciprocal formations are introduced on the reciprocal verb reduplication page.
The core pair
The required minimal pair expresses the same mutual helping event in two structures:
Mereka saling membantu.
They help each other.
Mereka membantu satu sama lain.
They help one another.
In the first, saling precedes membantu and makes the helping reciprocal. There is no following object for the people helped: each member of mereka is both helper and recipient across the event. In the second, membantu remains an ordinary transitive verb and satu sama lain fills its object position.
English puts each other after the verb in both cases. That encourages learners to say redundant saling membantu satu sama lain. Such doubling occurs in real speech for emphasis, but careful Standard Indonesian normally chooses one reciprocal strategy when both mark exactly the same relationship (informal when doubled).
Saling as part of the verbal predicate
Saling occurs immediately before the verb or verbal expression it makes reciprocal.
Kedua tetangga itu saling menyapa setiap pagi.
Those two neighbors greet each other every morning.
Kami saling percaya meskipun jarang bertemu.
We trust each other even though we rarely meet.
Para anggota tim harus saling mendengarkan.
The team members must listen to one another.
Aspect, modality, and negation normally precede the reciprocal predicate: sudah saling mengenal, harus saling membantu, tidak saling menyalahkan. Saling is not a free noun phrase and cannot serve alone as the object of a preposition.
Mereka sudah saling mengenal sejak kuliah.
They have known each other since university.
Dalam rapat ini, kita tidak boleh saling menyalahkan.
In this meeting, we must not blame one another.
Because the reciprocal relation is inside the predicate, saling reduces the verb's overt valency. Ordinary membantu expects someone helped; reciprocal saling membantu obtains those patients from the plural subject itself.
A reciprocal needs at least two participants
A clearly singular subject cannot normally support saling, because no second participant is available.
Rina dan Dimas saling mengirim pesan setiap hari.
Rina and Dimas send each other messages every day.
Kedua perusahaan itu saling bersaing untuk mendapatkan kontrak.
The two companies compete with each other for the contract.
Anggota keluarga itu saling menjaga.
The members of that family look after one another.
A grammatically singular collective noun can work if its meaning supplies multiple members: Pasangan itu saling mendukung “That couple supports each other.” By contrast, isolated Dia saling membantu is ill-formed unless dia has an unusual collective interpretation. Reciprocity depends on semantic plurality, not only visible reduplication or a plural pronoun.
What object restrictions really mean
The restriction is not “nothing may follow a verb with saling.” It is narrower: do not state the same reciprocal participant again as an ordinary direct object.
Mereka saling mengirim pesan setiap malam.
They send each other messages every night.
Kedua sahabat itu saling memberi hadiah ulang tahun.
The two friends give each other birthday gifts.
Here pesan and hadiah ulang tahun are themes—the things transferred. The reciprocal participants are understood as senders and recipients. Those theme objects can remain.
Other complements also remain when the verb licenses them:
Mereka saling berbicara tentang rencana masa depan.
They talk to each other about their future plans.
Kedua pihak saling berkomunikasi selama perundingan.
The two sides communicate with each other during the negotiations.
What careful usage avoids is Mereka saling membantu mereka when the final mereka is intended to mean the same people. Use bare reciprocal Mereka saling membantu or explicit Mereka membantu satu sama lain.
Satu sama lain as a phrase
Satu sama lain literally contains elements meaning “one” and “other,” but learn the whole sequence as the conventional reciprocal expression “one another.” It occupies the position required by the verb or preposition.
Mereka menghormati satu sama lain.
They respect one another.
Kami belajar banyak dari satu sama lain.
We learn a lot from one another.
Anggota kelompok itu berbagi informasi dengan satu sama lain.
The members of that group share information with one another.
After menghormati, the phrase is the direct object. After dari and dengan, it is a prepositional complement. This flexibility is useful when the reciprocal relation must appear in a location that saling cannot fill.
Possession uses satu sama lain after the possessed noun, often with -nya in a longer construction:
Mereka membaca tulisan satu sama lain sebelum rapat.
They read one another's writing before the meeting.
In careful prose, tulisan masing-masing may be clearer if the intended meaning is distributive “each person's respective writing” rather than mutual exchange. Reciprocity and distribution overlap in some contexts but are not identical.
Choosing between the two
Use saling when reciprocity is central to the type of action and a compact predicate sounds natural. It is very common with membantu, mengenal, percaya, menghormati, menyapa, bertukar, and berhubungan. Use satu sama lain when you want the reciprocal participants to occupy an explicit object or prepositional slot, or when contrast makes the participants more prominent.
| Need | Natural choice | Pattern |
|---|---|---|
| compact mutual predicate | saling | Mereka saling mendukung. |
| explicit direct object | satu sama lain | Mereka mendukung satu sama lain. |
| after a preposition | satu sama lain | Mereka belajar dari satu sama lain. |
| theme object remains | saling | Mereka saling bertukar cerita. |
Some verbs are already reciprocal in meaning. Bertemu means “meet,” bertengkar “quarrel,” and berunding “negotiate.” Adding saling may be redundant or may emphasize two-sided involvement; naturalness varies by verb. There is no perfect shortcut here—learn common reciprocal predicates as collocations.
Reflexive is not reciprocal
Reflexive action returns to the same individual; reciprocal action crosses between individuals.
Mereka melihat diri mereka sendiri di cermin.
They look at themselves in the mirror. (each person may see their own reflection)
Mereka saling melihat dari seberang ruangan.
They look at each other from across the room.
English plural themselves and each other are distinct too, but learners sometimes overuse diri sendiri for both. Indonesian keeps the contrast explicit: possessed diri is reflexive, while saling or satu sama lain is reciprocal.
Orthography and register
Write saling and satu sama lain as separate words in the patterns shown. Both are neutral and occur in speech and writing. Attach ku-, kau-, -ku, -mu, and -nya to their hosts: kubantu, kaubantu, temanku, temanmu, and temannya. Full Anda stays separate and capitalized; titles take capitals only where EYD V prescribes.
Common Mistakes
1. Adding an each-other object after saling
❌ Mereka saling membantu satu sama lain.
Redundant in careful usage — saling and satu sama lain mark the same reciprocal participants.
✅ Mereka saling membantu.
They help each other.
2. Using saling with one individual
❌ Dia saling menyapa setiap pagi.
Incorrect — one individual cannot supply both sides of this reciprocal greeting.
✅ Dia dan tetangganya saling menyapa setiap pagi.
He/She and the neighbor greet each other every morning.
3. Putting saling after the verb
❌ Mereka membantu saling saat kesulitan.
Incorrect placement — saling precedes the reciprocal verb.
✅ Mereka saling membantu saat kesulitan.
They help each other in difficult times.
4. Removing a legitimate theme object
❌ Mereka saling mengirim setiap malam.
Incomplete for the intended message-sending meaning — the transferred item is missing.
✅ Mereka saling mengirim surel setiap Jumat.
They send each other emails every Friday.
5. Using a reflexive for a mutual action
❌ Kedua sahabat itu membantu diri mereka sendiri.
Wrong for mutual help — this means they help themselves, not one another.
✅ Kedua sahabat itu membantu satu sama lain.
The two friends help one another.
Key Takeaways
- Saling builds reciprocity into the verb: Mereka saling membantu.
- Satu sama lain fills an object or prepositional position: membantu satu sama lain, dari satu sama lain.
- Reciprocal meaning requires at least two semantic participants.
- Saling suppresses the reciprocal participant as an overt object, but theme objects such as pesan may remain.
- Avoid doubling both strategies when they express exactly the same relation in careful Standard Indonesian.
