kena and Adversative Passive: Aspect, Modality, and Negation

Indonesian does not conjugate kena or the following bare root for tense. Separate preverbal particles create completion, progression, prospect, possibility, negation, and prohibition: sudah kena tipu, sedang kena hujan, akan kena curi, bisa kena tipu, tidak kena hujan, belum kena curi. Advanced control depends on particle order, scope, and whether the event can sensibly unfold over time.

This page builds on the formation and argument patterns covered elsewhere in the kena series. The affected phrase remains mainly informal when it contains a bare event root.

The particle template

The neutral template is:

affected subject + aspect / modal / negator + kena + complement

ParticleMinimal sequenceCore contribution
sudahDia sudah kena tipu.the affected event is realized/already occurred
sedangKami sedang kena hujan.the exposure is in progress
akanMotornya akan kena curi.the event is prospective
bisaDia bisa kena tipu.the affected event is possible
tidakKami tidak kena hujan.the event/exposure is denied
belumMotornya belum kena curi.the event has not occurred yet
janganJangan sampai kena tipu.the addressee is warned to prevent the event

Dia sudah kena tipu.

He/She has already been scammed. (informal)

Kami sedang kena hujan.

We are currently caught in the rain. (informal)

Motornya akan kena curi kalau dibiarkan di sana.

His/Her motorcycle will get stolen if it is left there. (informal)

Dia bisa kena tipu kalau tidak memeriksa alamat situs.

He/She could get scammed without checking the website address. (informal)

Kami tidak kena hujan karena naik mobil.

We did not get caught in the rain because we traveled by car. (informal)

Motornya belum kena curi, tetapi dua motor lain sudah hilang.

His/Her motorcycle has not been stolen, but two others are already gone. (informal; context supplies an ominous expectation)

Jangan sampai kena tipu oleh akun palsu.

Don't let yourself get scammed by a fake account. (informal warning)

Every marker is written separately. Kena also remains separate from tipu, hujan, or curi.

💡
Build the predicate from left to right: belum + kena + curi. The temporal or modal particle has wide scope over the unchanged affected construction.

Sudah: realized affectedness

Sudah presents the event or impact as realized before the relevant reference point. It is aspect, not a past-tense ending, so the time may come from context.

Dia sudah kena tipu dua kali tahun ini.

He/She has already been scammed twice this year. (informal)

Kami sudah kena hujan sebelum sampai pos pertama.

We had already been caught in the rain before reaching the first post. (informal)

Waktu polisi datang, motornya sudah kena curi.

When the police arrived, his/her motorcycle had already been stolen. (informal)

The same kena tipu, kena hujan, and kena curi forms remain unchanged. Sudah locates their realization relative to the surrounding narrative.

With a continuing state, sudah can emphasize that the affected condition is now in force:

Ponselku sudah kena air, jadi jangan dinyalakan dulu.

My phone has gotten wet, so don't turn it on yet. (informal)

Sedang: only when an internal phase is available

Sedang views an event during its development. Exposure to rain readily has duration:

Kami sedang kena hujan, jadi tunggu sebentar sebelum berangkat.

We are caught in the rain right now, so wait a moment before leaving. (informal)

Mereka sedang kena pemeriksaan tambahan di bandara.

They are undergoing an additional inspection at the airport.

A deception can also be construed as an unfolding manipulation rather than one completed trick:

Sepertinya dia sedang kena tipu oleh orang yang mengaku petugas bank.

It looks as though he/she is currently being scammed by someone claiming to be a bank officer. (informal)

Punctual theft normally lacks a salient middle phase. Motornya sedang kena curi is possible only in an unusual live, unfolding viewpoint, and neutral sedang dicuri is clearer if someone is witnessing the theft.

Cepat panggil satpam—motornya sedang dicuri!

Call security quickly—his/her motorcycle is being stolen!

Motornya sudah kena curi ketika dia kembali.

His/Her motorcycle had been stolen when he/she returned. (informal)

English freely builds a progressive passive with being. Indonesian still requires the lexical event to support an ongoing phase; grammar cannot make a completed loss intrinsically progressive.

Akan: prospective risk, not verbal future inflection

Akan places the affected event after the reference point or presents it as predicted.

Dia akan kena tipu lagi kalau tetap percaya akun itu.

He/She will get scammed again if he/she keeps trusting that account. (informal)

Kami akan kena hujan kalau berangkat sekarang.

We will get caught in the rain if we leave now. (informal)

Motornya akan kena curi kalau kuncinya dibiarkan terpasang.

His/Her motorcycle will get stolen if the key is left in it. (informal)

No future form is added to kena or the root. Time adverbials and akan establish the prospective reading.

Bisa: possibility and vulnerability

In affected clauses, bisa commonly expresses risk or vulnerability rather than the subject's deliberate ability.

Orang yang berpengalaman pun bisa kena tipu.

Even experienced people can get scammed. (informal)

Kalau lewat jalur terbuka, kami bisa kena hujan dan angin kencang.

If we take the exposed route, we could get caught in rain and strong winds. (informal)

Tanpa kunci tambahan, motornya bisa kena curi.

Without an additional lock, his/her motorcycle could get stolen. (informal)

The affected subject is not exercising an ability to be scammed or robbed. Bisa evaluates whether circumstances permit the unwanted event.

Particle combinations refine scope:

Dia masih bisa kena tipu meskipun sudah pernah diperingatkan.

He/She could still get scammed even after being warned. (informal)

Dengan sistem baru, pelanggan tidak akan mudah kena tipu.

With the new system, customers will not be easily scammed. (informal)

In masih bisa, continued possibility is asserted. In tidak akan, negation scopes over the prospective event.

Tidak and belum deny different things

Tidak denies the event, state, or general susceptibility. Belum says that the event has not been realized up to the reference point and normally leaves a future possibility salient.

Dia tidak kena tipu; dia membatalkan transaksi sebelum membayar.

He/She did not get scammed; he/she canceled the transaction before paying. (informal)

Dia belum kena tipu, tetapi penjual palsu itu masih menghubunginya.

He/She has not been scammed yet, but that fake seller is still contacting him/her. (informal)

Kami tidak kena hujan karena berangkat lebih awal.

We did not get caught in the rain because we left earlier. (informal)

Kami belum kena hujan, tetapi awan di depan sudah gelap.

We haven't been caught in rain yet, but the clouds ahead are already dark. (informal)

The “yet” implication makes belum kena curi pragmatically unusual without a context in which theft is feared, expected, or being contrasted.

Dari semua motor di gang itu, hanya motornya yang belum kena curi.

Of all the motorcycles in that alley, only his/hers has not been stolen yet. (informal; ominous context)

Without that expectation, speakers say the positive state directly: Motornya masih ada “The motorcycle is still there.”

Order changes scope

Dia tidak sedang kena tipu; dia memang sedang berbicara dengan petugas bank yang asli.

He/She is not currently being scammed; he/she really is speaking with a genuine bank officer. (informal)

Sekarang dia sudah tidak mudah kena tipu dengan cara seperti itu.

Now he/she no longer gets scammed easily by methods like that. (informal)

Dia belum pernah kena tipu lewat pesan singkat.

He/She has never yet been scammed through a text message. (informal)

Tidak sedang denies an ongoing interpretation. Sudah tidak marks a change into nonoccurrence—often “no longer.” Belum pernah means the experience has never occurred up to now.

💡
Particle order is scope, not style. Sudah tidak kena tipu means “no longer gets fooled,” while tidak sudah kena tipu is not the neutral Indonesian way to deny completion.

Jangan and the control problem

Jangan normally prohibits a controllable action. The affected subject of kena tipu or kena curi is not the willing controller of that event, so direct Jangan kena tipu can sound like blame or an unrealistically direct command. Indonesian usually inserts sampai, creating a warning to prevent the outcome.

Jangan sampai kena tipu hanya karena harganya murah.

Don't get scammed just because the price is low. (informal warning)

Jangan sampai kami kena hujan sebelum tiba di tenda.

Let's make sure we don't get caught in the rain before reaching the tent. (informal)

Motornya jangan sampai kena curi lagi; pasang kunci tambahan.

Make sure his/her motorcycle doesn't get stolen again; add another lock. (informal)

Direct jangan kena is more natural when the addressee can straightforwardly avoid physical contact:

Jangan kena air dulu sebelum lemnya kering.

Don't let it get wet before the glue dries. (informal instruction)

The difference comes from control and event type, not a different placement rule: jangan still precedes kena.

Bukan is contrastive, not the default verbal negator

Use tidak or belum for ordinary negation. Bukan becomes possible when explicitly correcting one diagnosis against another.

Dia tidak kena tipu; transaksinya memang dibatalkan.

He/She did not get scammed; the transaction really was canceled. (informal)

Bukan kena tipu, dia memang sengaja mentransfer uang itu sebagai sumbangan.

It wasn't a scam; he/she intentionally transferred the money as a donation. (explicit correction)

The second example is a contrastive fragment: bukan X, but rather another explanation. It does not license bukan as the ordinary negator before affected verbal predicates.

Common Mistakes

Moving an aspect marker after kena

❌ Dia kena sudah tipu dua kali.

Incorrect neutral order — sudah precedes the whole kena predicate.

✅ Dia sudah kena tipu dua kali.

He/She has already been scammed twice. (informal)

Joining separate particles and roots

❌ Motornya belumkenacuri.

Incorrect spelling — belum, kena, and curi are three words.

✅ Motornya belum kena curi.

His/Her motorcycle has not been stolen yet. (informal; context expects the possibility)

Forcing sedang onto a completed theft

❌ Waktu dia pulang, motornya sedang kena curi sejak dua jam sebelumnya.

Aspectual contradiction — a completed two-hour-old loss is not in progress at the return time.

✅ Waktu dia pulang, motornya sudah kena curi.

When he/she got home, the motorcycle had already been stolen. (informal)

Using bukan for ordinary event negation

❌ Kami bukan kena hujan di jalan.

Incorrect as a simple denial — use tidak.

✅ Kami tidak kena hujan di jalan.

We did not get caught in the rain on the way. (informal)

Issuing a direct prohibition for an uncontrolled event

❌ Motornya jangan kena curi lagi.

Pragmatically harsh or unnatural as a direct command to an affected motorcycle/owner.

✅ Motornya jangan sampai kena curi lagi; kunci setangnya.

Make sure the motorcycle doesn't get stolen again; lock the handlebars. (informal)

Key Takeaways

  • Kena and its complement stay unchanged; separate particles build aspect, prospect, possibility, and negation.
  • Sudah, sedang, akan, bisa, tidak, and belum normally precede the whole kena predicate.
  • Sedang requires an event with an accessible internal phase; completed theft and stable results resist a neutral progressive reading.
  • Bisa often expresses vulnerability, while belum carries an expectation that needs contextual support.
  • Jangan sampai kena ... is the natural preventive warning for events the affected participant does not control; bukan is reserved for explicit correction.
