The jadi family begins with a simple idea: a new state or outcome emerges. Bare jadi can mean “become,” “turn out,” “be ready,” or, as a discourse connector, “so.” Menjadi presents the change more explicitly, menjadikan adds a causer, and terjadi presents an event as occurring. The English translations differ, but the semantic path is coherent: emergence develops into causation and then into discourse consequence.
This is a lexical reference, not a complete account of Indonesian affixes. The productive principles behind meN-, ter-, ke-...-an, and -kan are treated in the Word Formation and Voice guides. Here the question is which established member of this particular family fits a clause. Unless marked otherwise, examples are neutral contemporary Standard Indonesian; (informal), (formal), and other labels identify restricted registers.
No person or tense paradigm
Indonesian does not conjugate jadi for person, number, or tense. A time expression or a separate aspect word supplies temporal interpretation.
| Frame | Indonesian form | Source of interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| first person | Saya jadi guru. | saya; no agreement ending |
| third person | Dia jadi guru. | dia; the same predicate |
| plural | Mereka jadi guru. | mereka; no plural ending |
| completed change | Dia sudah jadi guru. | separate sudah |
| prospective change | Dia akan menjadi guru. | separate akan |
| past occurrence | Kemarin terjadi kebakaran. | kemarin |
Dulu Nisa perawat, tetapi sekarang dia jadi guru.
Nisa used to be a nurse, but now she is a teacher.
Setelah lulus, mereka ingin menjadi penerjemah.
After graduating, they want to become translators.
Tadi pagi terjadi gangguan listrik di gedung sebelah.
There was a power outage in the building next door this morning.
English may use became, has become, will become, or occurred. None of those choices creates an ending on the Indonesian verb. Jadi is therefore not an infinitive corresponding to English to become; it is already a complete predicate.
Bare jadi: a result comes into being
With a subject and a nominal, adjectival, or verbal result complement, jadi presents the resulting state. It is especially common in conversation and uncomplicated narrative (everyday; often informal in careful contrasts with menjadi).
Ruang kosong di depan akhirnya jadi kedai kopi.
The vacant space out front eventually became a coffee shop.
Setelah ditambah sedikit air, sausnya jadi lebih encer.
After a little water was added, the sauce became thinner.
Kalau hujan terus, jalan tanah itu jadi licin.
If it keeps raining, that dirt road gets slippery.
The complement names the endpoint; it is not an object acted upon. In Ruang itu jadi kedai, the room undergoes a change, but kedai is its new identity. This is why ordinary jadi does not form a passive.
Jadi can also describe a product or plan reaching completion:
Kuenya sudah jadi, tetapi masih terlalu panas untuk dipotong.
The cake is ready, but it is still too hot to cut.
Kalau desainnya jadi minggu ini, percetakan bisa mulai hari Senin.
If the design is completed this week, the printer can start on Monday.
Rencana makan malamnya tidak jadi karena Dimas sakit.
The dinner plan was called off because Dimas was ill.
In the last example, tidak jadi means that an intended event fails to materialize. With a following verb, it often cancels a prior intention:
Saya tidak jadi berangkat malam ini; tiketnya sudah saya ubah.
I am not leaving tonight after all; I have changed the ticket.
Mereka jadi datang besok atau tetap hari Sabtu?
So are they coming tomorrow, or is it still Saturday?
Jadi as a consequence and discourse connector
At the beginning of a clause, jadi can gather the previous information into a consequence, conclusion, or next question: “so,” “therefore,” or “in that case.” This use is neutral in speech and informal-to-neutral writing; formal argumentation often chooses oleh karena itu or dengan demikian.
Bus terakhir sudah lewat. Jadi, kita pulang naik taksi saja.
The last bus has gone. So, let's just take a taxi home.
Jadi, rapatnya dipindahkan ke hari Kamis?
So, the meeting has been moved to Thursday?
Semua data sudah diperiksa, jadi laporan ini siap dikirim.
All the data has been checked, so this report is ready to send.
Biayanya melebihi anggaran; oleh karena itu, proyek tersebut ditunda.
The cost exceeds the budget; therefore, the project has been postponed. (formal)
The connector is not an unrelated homonym. A preceding situation “becomes” the basis for what follows. Punctuation helps in writing: sentence-initial Jadi, ... normally takes a comma when it frames the whole utterance.
Menjadi: an explicit change or resulting role
Menjadi is common in careful speech, news, academic prose, and formal writing, though it is not limited to those registers. It typically foregrounds a change into a role, condition, quantity, or status.
Bekas gudang itu kini menjadi pusat kegiatan warga.
The former warehouse has now become a community activity center.
Akses air bersih menjadi masalah utama selama musim kemarau.
Access to clean water becomes the main problem during the dry season.
Jumlah peserta telah menjadi dua kali lipat dalam tiga tahun.
The number of participants has doubled in three years. (formal)
Percakapan singkat itu kemudian menjadi persahabatan yang panjang.
That brief conversation later developed into a long friendship.
Bare jadi would be natural in most conversational versions. Menjadi is useful when the change itself is structurally important or when the prose needs a careful, explicit predicate. Do not mechanically add it before every nominal predicate: Dia guru means “She is a teacher,” while Dia menjadi guru means she becomes one.
Menjadikan: causing or construing a result
Menjadikan is transitive. Its actor causes an object to acquire a result, role, function, or status. The central frame is actor + menjadikan + affected object + result complement.
Warga menjadikan rumah tua itu museum kecil.
The residents turned the old house into a small museum.
Pengelola menjadikan aula utama sebagai ruang pamer sementara.
The management made the main hall into a temporary exhibition space.
Pengalaman itu menjadikan Raka lebih berhati-hati.
That experience made Raka more cautious.
Aturan baru menjadikan proses pendaftaran lebih sederhana.
The new rules make the registration process simpler.
The object is rumah tua itu, aula utama, Raka, or proses pendaftaran. What follows names the caused result. Sebagai can explicitly mark an assigned role, especially with functions and institutional roles; it is not required in every sentence.
Voice can foreground the affected entity without changing the causative relationship:
Rumah tua itu dijadikan museum kecil oleh warga setempat.
The old house was turned into a small museum by local residents.
Ruang belakang akan kami jadikan tempat penyimpanan.
We will turn the back room into a storage area.
The passive prefix is attached in dijadikan, whereas the locative preposition remains separate in di museum or di rumah. The broader causative system is explained on the -kan meaning page.
Terjadi and kejadian: occurrence packaged two ways
Terjadi is an intransitive verb meaning “happen, occur, take place, come about.” Its subject is the event, change, problem, or situation that emerges; it does not name someone deliberately becoming a role.
Apa yang sebenarnya terjadi di ruang rapat tadi?
What actually happened in the meeting room earlier?
Perubahan besar terjadi setelah layanan dipindahkan ke aplikasi baru.
A major change occurred after the service was moved to a new app.
Kesalahan seperti ini bisa terjadi kalau dua orang mengedit berkas yang sama.
An error like this can happen when two people edit the same file.
Tidak terjadi kerusakan pada bagian mesin yang lain.
No damage occurred to the other parts of the machine. (formal)
Kejadian is a noun: an event, occurrence, or incident. It can be counted, modified, possessed, and made the object of another verb.
Polisi meminta saksi menceritakan kejadian itu dari awal.
The police asked the witness to recount the incident from the beginning.
Kejadian serupa pernah dilaporkan di desa sebelah.
A similar incident has previously been reported in the neighboring village.
Kami baru mengetahui kejadiannya setelah melihat rekaman kamera.
We only learned what had happened after watching the camera footage.
Attached -nya in kejadiannya may mark the known incident or a possessor-like relation. These are established words, not forms to generate solely because English happens to say happen or event.
Lexicalized extensions and collocations
Some expressions preserve the outcome idea but have conventional meanings. Learn them whole.
Keluhannya makin menjadi-jadi setelah tidak ada petugas yang menanggapi.
His complaining got increasingly out of hand after no staff member responded.
Apa jadinya kalau semua orang mengabaikan aturan keselamatan?
What would happen if everyone ignored the safety rules?
Harga jadinya berapa setelah potongan anggota?
What is the final price after the member discount? (informal)
Menjadi-jadi is a lexicalized reduplicated verb meaning that undesirable behavior or a condition intensifies or gets out of hand. Apa jadinya? asks about the resulting situation. Conversational harga jadi or harga jadinya refers to the final or agreed price (informal; commercial interaction). These meanings are related, but none follows from a simple English word substitution.
Common Mistakes
Adding person or past-tense endings
❌ Mereka jadis guru setelah lulus.
Incorrect — jadi never takes a plural or third-person ending.
✅ Mereka jadi guru setelah lulus kuliah.
They became teachers after graduating from university.
Using menjadi for an event that occurs
❌ Pemadaman listrik menjadi tadi malam.
Incorrect — an event that occurred requires terjadi, not menjadi.
✅ Pemadaman listrik terjadi tadi malam sekitar pukul sebelas.
The power outage occurred at around eleven last night.
Omitting the affected object of menjadikan
❌ Mereka menjadikan sebagai perpustakaan kecil.
Incorrect — menjadikan needs the entity assigned the new function.
✅ Mereka menjadikan garasi itu sebagai perpustakaan kecil.
They made the garage into a small library.
Treating jadi as a required copula
❌ Sekarang ayah saya jadi adalah dosen.
Incorrect — jadi and adalah cannot be stacked to mean 'is.'
✅ Sekarang ayah saya adalah dosen di universitas negeri.
My father is now a lecturer at a state university. (formal identification)
✅ Setelah pindah bidang, ayah saya menjadi dosen.
After changing fields, my father became a lecturer.
Separating the passive prefix
❌ Gedung itu di jadikan klinik sementara.
Incorrect spelling — passive di- attaches to jadikan.
✅ Gedung itu dijadikan klinik sementara setelah banjir.
The building was made into a temporary clinic after the flood.
Key Takeaways
- Jadi is an unchanged predicate of emerging result; conversational tidak jadi + verb cancels a plan.
- Sentence-initial jadi turns a preceding situation into a conclusion or next step: “so.”
- Menjadi foregrounds change, while transitive menjadikan adds an actor that causes an object to reach a result.
- Terjadi predicates occurrence; kejadian packages an occurrence as a noun.
- Learn lexicalized forms such as menjadi-jadi and collocations such as apa jadinya as members of the family, not as mechanical translations.
