dengar, mendengar, and terdengar: Verb Family and Usage

The dengar family organizes auditory experience around different centers. Mendengar typically presents a perceiver receiving a sound or piece of information. Mendengarkan often adds deliberate or sustained attention to the stimulus. Didengar foregrounds something as actually heard, while terdengar presents it as audible or as having a particular sound. Pendengar names the listener.

That is a tendency, not a mathematical opposition: speakers sometimes use mendengar for attentive listening, especially with established collocations. The reliable method is to learn each form with its argument pattern and discourse focus, not to select a derivative from the nearest English word. General meN-, -kan, di-, and ter- rules remain on their dedicated pages. Unmarked examples below are neutral Standard Indonesian; conversational and formal uses are labeled.

No person or tense paradigm

No member of this family takes person, number, or tense endings. Separate subjects, time expressions, and aspect markers supply those interpretations.

completed perceptionSaya sudah mendengarnya.separate sudah
future attentionNanti saya akan mendengarkannya.separate nanti and akan

Tadi malam saya mendengar suara benda jatuh dari dapur.

Last night I heard the sound of something falling in the kitchen.

Sekarang mereka sedang mendengarkan rekaman wawancara itu.

They are listening to the interview recording now.

Besok kami akan mendengarkan presentasi dari tim lapangan.

Tomorrow we will listen to a presentation from the field team.

English changes hear to heard and adds will. Indonesian keeps the lexical form intact. The base dengar is not an infinitive β€œto hear”; it is a complete base used in specific constructions.

Bare dengar: commands, object orientation, and conversation

Bare dengar is the ordinary form in direct commands. It can take a stimulus directly or introduce a request for attention.

Dengar dulu sebelum kamu menjawab.

Listen first before you answer.

Coba dengar bunyi mesin ini; ada suara berderak.

Listen to this engine sound; there is a rattling noise.

Dengar, ada yang memanggil namamu dari luar.

Listen, someone is calling your name from outside.

After a first- or second-person pronominal actor in an object-oriented clause, the same base appears:

Pesan suara itu sudah saya dengar dua kali.

I have already heard that voice message twice.

Keluhan warga belum kami dengar secara langsung.

We have not yet heard the residents' complaints directly.

Actor-first bare dengar is also widespread in conversation (informal):

Tadi aku dengar Nanda akan pindah bulan depan.

I heard earlier that Nanda is moving next month. (informal)

Careful actor-oriented writing normally uses mendengar. The distribution reflects voice and register, not time.

Mendengar: auditory perception and received information

Mendengar is transitive. Its subject is the perceiver and its direct object is a sound, utterance, event, person speaking, or information received through hearing.

Dari kamar belakang, kami mendengar bel pintu berbunyi.

From the back room, we heard the doorbell ring.

Saya tidak mendengar nama stasiun karena pengeras suaranya rusak.

I did not hear the station name because the loudspeaker was broken.

Anak itu mendengar ibunya memanggil dari halaman.

The child heard his or her mother calling from the yard.

Kami mendengar bahwa jadwal penerbangan sudah berubah.

We heard that the flight schedule had changed.

Dokter mendengar bunyi napas pasien dengan stetoskop.

The doctor listened to the patient's breath sounds with a stethoscope.

The last example is deliberate, yet mendengar is natural because the collocation focuses on detecting and assessing a sound. This is why English hear/listen cannot dictate the affix by itself.

Mendengar kabar and mendengar bahwa... extend auditory reception into learning information from a source:

Saya senang mendengar kabar bahwa operasinya berjalan lancar.

I was glad to hear that the operation went smoothly.

Begitu mendengar pengumuman itu, para penumpang menuju pintu keluar.

As soon as they heard the announcement, the passengers headed toward the exit.

The proposition is received, but mendengar does not guarantee that it is true. Source and evidential stance come from the surrounding discourse.

Mendengarkan: sustained or purposeful attention

Mendengarkan typically presents the perceiver as directing attention toward a stimulus over some span of time. Its object follows directly, without kepada.

Rina mendengarkan musik sambil merapikan meja kerjanya.

Rina listens to music while tidying her desk.

Para siswa mendengarkan penjelasan guru sampai selesai.

The pupils listened to the teacher's explanation until the end.

Tolong dengarkan keluhan pelanggan sebelum menawarkan solusi.

Please listen to the customer's complaint before offering a solution.

Saya sedang mendengarkan podcast tentang sejarah kota.

I am listening to a podcast about the city's history.

Ia duduk diam dan mendengarkan suara hujan di atap.

She sat quietly and listened to the rain on the roof.

Compare perception with selected attention:

Saya mendengar musik dari kamar sebelah ketika melewati lorong.

I heard music from the next room while walking through the corridor.

Saya mendengarkan musik itu lagi untuk memahami liriknya.

I listened to that music again to understand the lyrics.

In the first sentence, the music enters awareness incidentally. In the second, it becomes the chosen focus. Duration words such as sampai selesai, manner words such as baik-baik, and goals such as untuk memahami reinforce the attentive reading.

Use the contrast as a profiling tool, not an absolute translation rule: mendengar foregrounds reception or detection; mendengarkan foregrounds directed attention to the stimulus.

Didengar and didengarkan: two passive event types

Didengar foregrounds the stimulus as actually perceived. An actor may follow with oleh or remain implicit.

Ledakan itu didengar oleh warga hingga radius beberapa kilometer.

The explosion was heard by residents several kilometers away.

Nama pemenang belum pernah didengar oleh sebagian peserta.

Some participants had never heard the winner's name before.

Pendapat semua pihak harus didengar sebelum keputusan dibuat.

All parties' views must be heard before a decision is made. (formal)

Didengarkan foregrounds something as the object of deliberate listening:

Rekaman pengaduan itu didengarkan kembali oleh penyidik.

The complaint recording was listened to again by the investigator.

Lagu lama itu masih sering didengarkan oleh generasi muda.

That old song is still often listened to by younger generations.

Usulan kami akhirnya didengarkan oleh pengelola gedung.

Our proposal was finally listened to by the building management.

In the last example, didengarkan metaphorically implies that the proposal received attention, while didengar could mean merely that it reached someone's ears. Both passive forms are written solid. A location remains separate: didengarkan di ruang rapat.

Terdengar: audible or sounding a certain way

Terdengar starts from the stimulus. It describes something as audible, reaching perception, or seeming to have a quality when heard. No active perceiver is required.

Suara langkah kaki terdengar dari tangga belakang.

Footsteps could be heard from the back staircase.

Pengumuman itu tidak terdengar jelas di bagian belakang aula.

The announcement was not clearly audible at the back of the hall.

Dari telepon, suaramu terdengar sangat lelah.

Over the phone, your voice sounds very tired.

Rencana tersebut terdengar sederhana, tetapi pelaksanaannya rumit.

The plan sounds simple, but its implementation is complicated.

Tiba-tiba terdengar suara seseorang mengetuk jendela.

Suddenly, the sound of someone knocking on the window could be heard.

Contrast passive hearing and audibility:

Kesaksian itu didengar oleh majelis hakim dalam sidang tertutup.

The testimony was heard by the panel of judges in a closed hearing. (formal)

Kesaksian itu terdengar kurang meyakinkan dari rekamannya.

The testimony sounded less convincing in the recording.

Didengar reports a hearing event with a potential perceiver. Terdengar describes access to sound or an auditory impression. General ter- meanings are explained on the ter- word-formation page.

πŸ’‘
To test didengar against terdengar, try adding an actor. Didengar oleh warga naturally names who heard the stimulus; terdengar dari lorong instead names the source or vantage point from which it was audible.

Pendengar and pendengaran

Pendengar names a person or audience that listens. Pendengaran names the faculty, capacity, or process of hearing. They are established nouns with distinct collocations.

Penyiar itu mengajak pendengar mengirim pertanyaan melalui pesan singkat.

The broadcaster invited listeners to send questions by text message.

Jumlah pendengar podcast tersebut meningkat setiap bulan.

The number of listeners to that podcast increases every month.

Pendengarannya berkurang sejak mengalami infeksi telinga.

His or her hearing has declined since the ear infection.

Tes pendengaran dilakukan di ruang yang kedap suara.

The hearing test is conducted in a soundproof room.

Do not choose between these nouns by translating English hearing alone: a hearing in court is sidang, while the bodily faculty is pendengaran.

Hearsay and conventional expressions

Reduplicated dengar-dengar introduces information obtained indirectly (informal). It marks the source as hearsay rather than a directly verified fact.

Dengar-dengar, warung di ujung jalan itu akan tutup bulan depan.

I hear that the food stall at the end of the street will close next month. (informal hearsay)

Dengar-dengar kamu mendapat pekerjaan baru; selamat, ya!

I hear you got a new job; congratulations! (informal)

Jangan hanya dengar kata orang; periksa sumber aslinya.

Do not rely only on what people say; check the original source. (everyday)

The hyphen in dengar-dengar marks actual reduplication. Dengar kata orang is a conventional conversational phrase, not proof that the report is reliable.

Common Mistakes

Adding English tense or agreement morphology

❌ Dia mendengars alarm itu dari luar rumah.

Incorrect β€” Indonesian verbs do not take an English third-person ending.

βœ… Dia mendengar alarm itu dari halaman belakang.

She heard the alarm from the back yard.

Using terdengar with an active perceiver and object

❌ Saya terdengar suara tangisan dari kamar sebelah.

Incorrect β€” terdengar centers the audible stimulus, not a perceiver with an object.

βœ… Saya mendengar suara tangisan dari kamar sebelah.

I heard crying from the next room.

Retaining kepada before the direct stimulus

❌ Kami mendengarkan kepada penjelasan pemandu.

Incorrect β€” the stimulus follows mendengarkan directly.

βœ… Kami mendengarkan penjelasan pemandu sampai tur berakhir.

We listened to the guide's explanation until the tour ended.

Confusing the listener with the hearing faculty

❌ Pendengaran acara radio itu diminta menelepon studio.

Incorrect noun β€” pendengaran is the faculty of hearing, not a person.

βœ… Pendengar acara radio itu diminta menelepon studio.

Listeners to the radio program were asked to call the studio.

Separating passive di-

❌ Rekaman itu di dengarkan di ruang pemeriksaan.

Incorrect spelling β€” passive didengarkan is solid, while locative di ruang is separate.

βœ… Rekaman itu didengarkan di ruang pemeriksaan oleh dua petugas.

The recording was listened to in the examination room by two officers.

Key Takeaways

  • Mendengar profiles reception or detection, while mendengarkan often profiles sustained, purposeful attention.
  • Didengar/didengarkan report passive hearing or listening events; terdengar describes audibility or auditory appearance.
  • Pendengar is a listener, while pendengaran is hearing as a faculty or process.
  • Learn hearsay dengar-dengar and other collocations as established uses, with aspect words separate and actual derivatives written solid.
