Indonesian weather expressions do not need an English-style dummy it. Weather nouns and adjectives can function directly as predicates: Hujan, Panas sekali, Langit mendung, Daerah ini berangin. An overt subject appears only when it refers to something meaningful—udara, langit, cuaca, hujan, or a named place.
This page covers everyday weather talk, forecasts, travel warnings, seasons, and a few metaphorical uses. It does not provide an exhaustive environmental vocabulary list or regional formula inventory. The structural insight is simple but powerful: Indonesian clauses can predicate a weather condition without inserting dia or itu merely because English requires it. The weather-sentence guide gives the wider clause analysis.
Weather predicates need no dummy subject
| Indonesian pattern | Example | Why it works |
|---|---|---|
| weather noun as predicate | Hujan. | the event itself forms the clause |
| adjective as predicate | Panas sekali. | Indonesian needs no copula or dummy pronoun |
| referential subject + predicate | Langit mendung. | langit has real semantic content |
| place + weather predicate | Di sini dingin. | location frames the condition |
Hujan sejak sebelum subuh.
It has been raining since before dawn. (spoken weather clause; no dummy subject)
Panas sekali di dalam bus ini.
It is very hot inside this bus. (adjective predicate)
Langit mendung, tetapi belum tentu turun hujan.
The sky is overcast, but it will not necessarily rain.
It is quite cold in this mountain area at night.
Dia refers to a person or other discourse participant. Itu points to an identifiable thing or situation. Neither is an empty weather placeholder.
Hujan as noun and event
Hujan can name the phenomenon, form a compact weather clause, or combine with turun in fuller descriptions. Sedang hujan is common in speech; sedang turun hujan is more explicit.
Jangan lupa membawa payung; di luar sedang hujan.
Do not forget to take an umbrella; it is raining outside. (neutral spoken)
Hujan deras turun selama hampir dua jam.
Heavy rain fell for almost two hours.
Tadi pagi sempat hujan sebentar, lalu matahari muncul lagi.
It rained briefly this morning, then the sun came out again. (conversation)
Kalau hujan belum reda, kita tunggu di bawah atap saja.
If the rain has not eased, let’s wait under the roof.
Prakiraan menyebutkan hujan ringan berpeluang turun pada sore hari.
The forecast says light rain may fall in the afternoon. (formal forecast)
Kehujanan means being caught or affected by rain, not simply “it is raining.”
I got caught in the rain while walking from the bus stop to the office.
Panas and dingin describe different domains
Bare panas and dingin can describe weather, air, objects, food, or bodily sensation. Name the subject when the domain could be unclear.
It is hot today, and the air feels very dry.
Air di dalam botol itu masih dingin.
The water in that bottle is still cold.
Supnya sudah dingin; mau saya panaskan lagi?
The soup has gone cold; shall I heat it again?
Saya kedinginan karena lupa membawa jaket.
I feel cold because I forgot to bring a jacket. (affected bodily state)
The child is overheated after playing on the open field. (affected bodily state)
English uses I am cold for bodily sensation. Indonesian often chooses kedinginan for “feel/suffer from cold”; saya dingin can sound like the person’s body or manner is cold rather than a temporary discomfort.
Mendung, berawan, and berangin
Mendung describes an overcast, darkened sky; berawan means cloudy and can be less threatening. Berangin describes a windy place or condition. All can serve as predicates.
It is overcast this morning, so the light in the living room is rather dim.
Tomorrow’s weather is expected to be cloudy in the morning and clear in the afternoon. (formal forecast)
Pantai sebelah timur sangat berangin menjelang malam.
The eastern beach is very windy toward evening.
Anginnya semakin kencang; sebaiknya tenda segera diturunkan.
The wind is getting stronger; the tent should be taken down immediately.
Langit tadi berawan, tetapi sekarang sudah cerah.
The sky was cloudy earlier, but now it has cleared.
Angin is a noun; berangin predicates that a place or time has wind. Anginnya kencang selects a particular wind as topic.
Musim and Indonesian climate talk
At the broad national level, musim hujan and musim kemarau are more relevant than a four-season European template. Local rainfall patterns vary, and some areas have transitional periods described as pancaroba.
The rainy season usually increases flood risk in this low-lying area.
During the dry season, residents must conserve clean-water supplies.
Sekarang masa pancaroba, jadi cuacanya cepat berubah.
It is the transitional season now, so the weather changes quickly.
Seasonal patterns in every region do not always begin in the same month.
Avoid treating musim panas and musim dingin as the ordinary national Indonesian annual cycle. They are useful when discussing countries that have summer and winter.
My younger sibling studies in Japan and will come home during winter.
Forecast language
Forecasts use diperkirakan, berpotensi, berpeluang, kemungkinan, and explicit places/times (formal/journalistic). These expressions separate prediction from observation.
Moderate to heavy rain is forecast in the southern area at night. (formal forecast)
Angin kencang berpotensi terjadi di sekitar pesisir hingga besok pagi.
Strong winds may occur around the coast through tomorrow morning. (formal forecast)
Air temperatures are forecast to range between 24 and 31 degrees Celsius.
Pada siang hari, cuaca berpeluang cerah berawan.
In the afternoon, conditions may be partly cloudy. (forecast)
A forecast is not a certainty; local conditions can change quickly.
Small talk about weather
Weather talk often opens an interaction, acknowledges shared discomfort, or leads to a practical offer.
Rina: Panas sekali hari ini, ya?
Rina: It is very hot today, isn’t it? (small talk)
Mr. Dedi: Yes, there has been almost no wind since morning. (small-talk response)
Rina: Silakan masuk, Pak. Di dalam lebih sejuk.
Rina: Please come in, sir. It is cooler inside. (hospitality response)
Pak Dedi: Terima kasih. Sepertinya nanti sore akan hujan.
Mr. Dedi: Thank you. It looks as though it will rain this afternoon.
The initial ya? invites shared perception; the sequence then moves to hospitality and prediction.
Travel and environmental warnings
Warnings should name the hazard, location, time, and required action. Avoid vague dramatization.
Pengendara diminta berhati-hati karena kabut tebal mengurangi jarak pandang.
Drivers are asked to be careful because thick fog reduces visibility. (formal travel warning)
High waves are forecast in northern waters; small boats should not sail. (formal warning)
Jalan menuju air terjun licin setelah hujan; gunakan alas kaki yang sesuai.
The road to the waterfall is slippery after rain; wear suitable footwear. (travel warning)
Air quality is poor, so children are advised to play indoors. (environmental guidance)
If the river level continues rising, residents along the banks must evacuate immediately.
Metaphorical weather
Weather vocabulary can describe difficult periods, changing moods, or social tension (figurative; neutral/literary depending on phrasing).
After several difficult months, the storm affecting that family is finally beginning to pass. (figurative)
Suasana rapat mendadak memanas ketika anggaran dibahas.
The atmosphere in the meeting suddenly heated up when the budget was discussed. (figurative)
Hubungan kedua tim sempat dingin, tetapi sekarang mereka bekerja sama lagi.
Relations between the two teams were cold for a while, but now they are cooperating again. (figurative)
Cuaca sedang tidak bersahabat, jadi perjalanan laut ditunda.
The weather is unfavorable, so the sea journey is postponed. (conventional personification; literal weather assessment)
The last expression personifies weather but still describes actual conditions. Label metaphorical readings from context rather than assuming every panas/dingin is literal.
Common Mistakes
1. Adding dia as dummy it
❌ Dia hujan deras sejak pagi.
Incorrect—dia refers to a discourse participant and cannot serve as empty weather it.
✅ Hujan deras turun sejak pagi di wilayah utara.
Heavy rain has fallen since morning in the northern area.
2. Adding itu as an empty subject
❌ Itu sangat panas di dalam ruang tunggu.
Incorrect if itu has no referent—Indonesian does not need dummy it.
It is very hot and stuffy inside the waiting room.
3. Using saya dingin for temporary bodily discomfort
Unnatural for the intended bodily sensation—use kedinginan.
I am cold because I waited outside without a jacket.
4. Confusing mendung with guaranteed rain
❌ Kalau mendung, hujan pasti turun dalam beberapa menit.
Incorrect inference—overcast skies do not guarantee immediate rain.
✅ Langit mendung; mungkin hujan turun menjelang sore.
The sky is overcast; it may rain toward evening.
5. Treating four seasons as Indonesia’s universal pattern
❌ Semua wilayah Indonesia mengalami musim panas, gugur, dingin, dan semi setiap tahun.
Incorrect generalization—Indonesian seasonal patterns are not a uniform four-season cycle.
Many regions speak of rainy and dry seasons, with varying patterns.
