Overmarking Plurality

English usually marks plural nouns whenever they refer to more than one countable thing. Indonesian does not have number agreement of that kind. A bare noun can be singular, plural, or number-neutral; a numeral or quantifier already supplies quantity; reduplication can make a collection, variety, or plurality salient; and a classifier identifies a counting unit.

The common transfer error is to stack every visible marker: tiga buku-buku, banyak anak-anak, or dua ekor kucing-kucing. In careful Standard Indonesian, choose only the material that contributes meaning. Multiple markers are justified only when each adds something distinct—not because the noun must “agree” with a plural word. The plurality choice guide gives the full system.

The contribution test

For every apparent number marker, ask what it contributes:

FormMain contributionExample
bare nounkind or contextually understood participant(s)Saya membeli buku
numeralexact cardinal quantitytiga buku
quantifiernon-exact quantity or totalitybanyak buku, semua buku
noun reduplicationsalient collection, plurality, or varietybuku-buku lama
classifiercounting unit or semantic classtiga buah buku

Saya membeli buku di toko dekat kampus.

I bought a book/books at the shop near campus. (number supplied by context)

Saya membeli tiga buku di toko dekat kampus.

I bought three books at the shop near campus. (exact number; noun stays unreduplicated)

Di rak belakang tersimpan buku-buku lama tentang sejarah pelabuhan.

Old books about the port’s history are kept on the back shelf. (salient collection/variety)

💡
Indonesian number words do not trigger agreement. If tiga already says “three,” repeating the noun normally adds no new plural meaning.

Common Mistakes

The following error types identify which marker already supplies number and when a second marker genuinely contributes a distinct meaning.

Common Mistakes: numeral plus reduplicated noun

1. Writing tiga buku-buku

❌ Saya meminjam tiga buku-buku dari perpustakaan daerah.

Incorrect overmarking—the numeral already gives the exact plural quantity.

✅ Saya meminjam tiga buku dari perpustakaan daerah.

I borrowed three books from the regional library.

❌ Panitia menyediakan empat meja-meja untuk pendaftaran ulang.

Incorrect overmarking—empat already counts the tables.

✅ Panitia menyediakan empat meja untuk pendaftaran ulang.

The committee provides four tables for re-registration.

❌ Kami menanam sepuluh pohon-pohon di sepanjang jalan desa.

Incorrect overmarking—the exact numeral makes ordinary plural reduplication unnecessary.

✅ Kami menanam sepuluh pohon di sepanjang jalan desa.

We planted ten trees along the village road.

The repair test is simple: if the reduplication contributes only “more than one,” delete it after an exact numeral.

Numeral reduplication is a different construction

Do not confuse noun plural reduplication with a distributive numeral such as dua-dua “two at a time/in pairs.”

Para peserta masuk ke ruangan dua-dua.

The participants enter the room two at a time. (distributive numeral reduplication)

Petugas membagikan formulir itu satu-satu.

The officer distributes the forms one by one. (informal distributive numeral; standard careful form satu per satu is also available)

Petugas memanggil peserta satu per satu sesuai nomor antrean.

The officer calls participants one by one according to queue number. (neutral/formal distributive expression)

Here the repetition changes distribution, so it is not redundant plural agreement.

Common Mistakes: quantifier plus ordinary plural reduplication

2. Writing banyak anak-anak

In careful Standard Indonesian, banyak anak already means “many children.” Ordinary plural reduplication usually adds nothing.

❌ Banyak anak-anak menunggu bus sekolah di depan pasar.

Redundant in careful Standard Indonesian—banyak already supplies plurality.

✅ Banyak anak menunggu bus sekolah di depan pasar.

Many children are waiting for the school bus in front of the market.

❌ Beberapa rumah-rumah rusak akibat angin kencang tadi malam.

Incorrect ordinary plural stacking—beberapa already quantifies the houses.

✅ Beberapa rumah rusak akibat angin kencang tadi malam.

Several houses were damaged by strong winds last night.

❌ Semua peserta-peserta harus berkumpul di aula utama.

Incorrect in a formal instruction—semua already expresses totality.

✅ Semua peserta harus berkumpul di aula utama.

All participants must gather in the main hall.

❌ Para tamu-tamu dipersilakan mengambil tempat duduk.

Incorrect stacking—para already groups human referents as plural.

✅ Para tamu dipersilakan mengambil tempat duduk.

Guests are invited to take their seats. (formal)

Forms like banyak anak-anak occur in spontaneous speech, but that does not make the stacking necessary or the best edited choice.

Bare nouns are not secretly singular

English learners sometimes “repair” a perfectly plural bare noun by reduplicating it. Context can already establish number.

3. Reduplicating every noun translated by an English plural

❌ Setelah rapat selesai, karyawan-karyawan pulang melalui pintu samping.

Unnecessary plural marking when the workforce is already understood as a group.

✅ Setelah rapat selesai, karyawan pulang melalui pintu samping.

After the meeting, the employees leave through the side door.

❌ Di sekolah itu, guru-guru harus hadir sebelum pukul tujuh setiap hari.

Unnecessary if guru denotes the staff as a general class in this policy statement.

✅ Di sekolah itu, guru harus hadir sebelum pukul tujuh setiap hari.

At that school, teachers must arrive before seven every day. (generic class reading)

Penumpang diminta tidak berdiri di dekat pintu.

Passengers are asked not to stand near the door. (bare noun with generic plural reading)

Petani di wilayah ini menanam padi pada awal musim hujan.

Farmers in this area plant rice at the beginning of the rainy season. (bare generic plural)

Bare nouns are number-neutral. The verb does not agree with singular or plural, so no other word forces the noun to change form.

When reduplication contributes collection or variety

Noun reduplication is useful when a plural collection, multiple instances, or variety becomes discourse-salient.

Buku-buku di rak paling atas belum dimasukkan ke katalog.

The books on the top shelf have not been entered into the catalog. (specific plural collection)

Di pasar malam itu dijual makanan-makanan khas dari berbagai daerah.

At that night market, regional specialty foods from various areas are sold. (variety reading)

Setelah banjir surut, warga mengumpulkan barang-barang yang masih dapat digunakan.

After the flood receded, residents collected the items that could still be used. (heterogeneous collection)

Pertanyaan-pertanyaan dari peserta akan dibahas pada sesi terakhir.

The participants’ questions will be discussed in the final session. (bounded salient set)

Compare a kind-level bare noun:

Buku sejarah membantu kita membandingkan berbagai sumber masa lalu.

History books help us compare various sources about the past. (kind/generic bare noun)

Buku-buku sejarah di lemari itu merupakan sumbangan keluarga Pak Hasan.

The history books in that cabinet were donated by Mr. Hasan’s family. (specific collection)

Plurality is part of the contrast, but discourse salience and variety do more work than English plural agreement.

Classifiers do not trigger noun agreement

Classifiers appear between a numeral and noun: tiga orang siswa, dua ekor kucing, lima lembar surat. The noun remains unreduplicated.

4. Reduplicating after a classifier phrase

❌ Tiga orang siswa-siswa menunggu guru di depan laboratorium.

Incorrect stacking—the numeral and classifier already count three people.

✅ Tiga orang siswa menunggu guru di depan laboratorium.

Three students are waiting for the teacher outside the laboratory.

❌ Dua ekor kucing-kucing tidur di bawah meja makan.

Incorrect overmarking—the classifier phrase already provides the count.

✅ Dua ekor kucing tidur di bawah meja makan.

Two cats are sleeping under the dining table.

❌ Lima lembar surat-surat itu belum ditandatangani.

Incorrect ordinary plural stacking after an exact classifier phrase.

✅ Lima lembar surat itu belum ditandatangani kepala bagian.

Those five letters have not been signed by the department head.

Many nouns do not require a classifier at all: tiga buku is natural. Tiga buah buku individuates the items and is also possible, but buah is not an agreement word.

Saya memesan tiga buku untuk perpustakaan kelas.

I ordered three books for the classroom library. (no classifier required)

Di dalam paket itu ada tiga buah buku dan satu peta besar.

Inside the package are three books and one large map. (buah explicitly counts objects)

Meaningful stacking: every marker must earn its place

Some strings contain several number-related elements without redundancy because they contribute different meanings.

A known collection plus exhaustivity

Buku-buku itu sudah saya periksa semuanya.

I have checked all of those books. (reduplication establishes the collection; semuanya asserts no exceptions)

Anak-anak dari kelompok pertama sudah pulang semuanya.

All the children from the first group have gone home. (salient group plus exhaustive totality)

Here semuanya does not merely agree. It adds “every member, without exception” after a previously established plural collection. In formal prose, semua buku itu sudah saya periksa is often more compact.

A numeral plus a lexicalized reduplicated word

Some hyphenated words are lexical items, not plural forms created for the sentence. A numeral can count them.

Tiga kupu-kupu hinggap pada bunga di dekat jendela.

Three butterflies land on the flowers near the window. (kupu-kupu is the lexical noun)

Polisi menangkap dua mata-mata yang mencoba mengambil dokumen rahasia.

Police arrested two spies who tried to take secret documents. (mata-mata is a lexicalized noun)

Anak itu membawa dua mobil-mobilan ke rumah neneknya.

The child brings two toy cars to the grandmother’s house. (mobil-mobilan is a derived toy noun, not ordinary plural mobil)

Deleting the hyphenated material would change the word: kupu is not “one butterfly,” mata means “eye,” and mobil means a real car rather than a toy.

A classifier plus a lexicalized reduplicated noun

Dua ekor kupu-kupu masuk melalui jendela yang terbuka.

Two butterflies came in through the open window. (classifier counts a lexicalized reduplicated noun)

The classifier contributes the animal counting unit; kupu-kupu contributes the lexical identity.

💡
“More than one marker” is not automatically wrong. It becomes redundant only when two forms make the same contribution and neither changes the interpretation.

Kinds readings are not ordinary counting

Reduplicated nouns can foreground types or varied instances rather than an exact count.

Kain-kain tradisional dari wilayah timur dipamerkan di ruang utama.

Traditional textiles from eastern regions are displayed in the main hall. (varied types/items)

Obat-obatan tertentu harus disimpan pada suhu rendah.

Certain medicines must be stored at low temperature. (lexicalized/collective variety form obat-obatan)

Pohon-pohonan di lereng itu mulai tumbuh kembali setelah kebakaran.

The vegetation/various trees on that slope are beginning to grow back after the fire. (collective/variety derivation)

These forms cannot always be replaced by a numeral. They classify the domain as a varied or collective set.

Common Mistakes: final repair pairs

5. Removing lexical reduplication after a numeral

❌ Tiga kupu hinggap di bunga karena tiga sudah menandai jamak.

Incorrect repair—kupu-kupu is the whole lexical noun, not a plural of kupu.

✅ Tiga kupu-kupu hinggap di bunga kertas dekat pagar.

Three butterflies land on the bougainvillea near the fence.

6. Assuming multiple markers always agree

❌ Dalam ‘Buku-buku itu saya periksa semuanya’, semuanya hanya mengulang tanda jamak.

Incorrect analysis—semuanya adds exhaustive ‘all without exception’ to a salient collection.

✅ Berkas-berkas dari cabang timur sudah kami periksa semuanya.

We have checked every one of the files from the eastern branch. (collection plus exhaustivity)

7. Adding a classifier mechanically

❌ Saya membeli tiga orang buku untuk kelas bahasa.

Incorrect classifier choice—orang classifies humans, not books.

✅ Saya membeli tiga buku latihan untuk kelas bahasa.

I bought three workbooks for the language class.

Key Takeaways

  • Indonesian nouns do not agree in number with numerals or quantifiers.
  • Use tiga buku, banyak anak, and dua ekor kucing, not ordinary plural reduplication after each marker.
  • Bare nouns can be singular, plural, generic, or number-neutral according to context.
  • Reduplication can foreground a salient collection or variety rather than merely copy English plural -s.
  • Stacking is meaningful only when every element contributes something distinct, as in collection plus exhaustivity or a numeral counting a lexicalized reduplicated noun.
