English not, no, and don't do not map to one Indonesian word. Tidak denies an ordinary verb, adjective, or circumstance; bukan rejects a noun identity or contrastive alternative; belum says an expected situation has not happened yet; jangan prohibits an action. Using the wrong form changes how Indonesian classifies the predicate or what the speaker expects.
Negation is therefore a practical diagnostic of Indonesian grammar. The negator decision guide gives extended contrasts; this page repairs the most frequent transfer errors.
The four-question repair test
- Is this a command telling someone not to act? Use jangan.
- Is the situation false so far but expected or still possible later? Use belum.
- Am I rejecting a noun identity or correcting one alternative? Use bukan.
- Am I simply denying an action, quality, manner, or location? Use tidak.
| Negator | Core job | Example frame |
|---|---|---|
| tidak | propositional denial | tidak datang, tidak mahal |
| bukan | identity/contrast rejection | bukan dokter, bukan hari ini |
| belum | not yet | belum tiba, belum siap |
| jangan | negative directive | jangan masuk |
Dita tidak bekerja pada hari Minggu.
Dita does not work on Sundays.
Dita bukan dokter; dia ahli gizi.
Dita is not a doctor; she is a nutritionist.
Dita belum tiba di klinik.
Dita has not arrived at the clinic yet.
Jangan masuk sebelum nama Anda dipanggil.
Do not enter before your name is called.
Tidak diagnoses a nonnominal predicate
Use tidak before ordinary verbal, adjectival, and many prepositional predicates.
We do not accept cash payments at this counter.
The back road is not wide enough for a large bus.
Mr. Rudi is not at the office until Monday.
Maya tidak sedang memakai ruang rapat.
Maya is not using the meeting room right now.
Neutral tidak is standard across speech and writing. Nggak/enggak are (informal) variants with regional and social distributions; they do not change the underlying predicate category.
Bukan identifies or corrects
Use bukan before a noun phrase when rejecting what someone or something is, whose it is, or which candidate applies.
Itu bukan koper saya.
That is not my suitcase.
Rapat besok bukan pertemuan terbuka.
Tomorrow's meeting is not a public meeting.
Bukan also rejects a focused alternative of any category. The continuation often supplies the correction with melainkan (formal) or tapi (informal).
Kami berangkat hari Kamis, bukan hari Jumat.
We leave on Thursday, not Friday.
Saya datang bukan untuk menyalahkan siapa pun, melainkan untuk mencari solusi.
I came not to blame anyone, but to find a solution. (formal)
Bukan Rina yang mengubah jadwal itu.
It was not Rina who changed that schedule.
Here a later verb does not force tidak because bukan contrastively selects the responsible person.
Belum encodes expectation
Belum presents a situation as unrealized up to the reference time while leaving a later change open.
Pesanan kami belum sampai di hotel.
Our order has not arrived at the hotel yet.
That girl cannot read a book without help yet.
Saya belum yakin akan menerima tawaran tersebut.
I am not yet sure whether I will accept that offer.
Compare tidak siap as a flat refusal or description with belum siap as an open not-yet state.
Saya tidak siap membahas masalah pribadi itu.
I am not prepared to discuss that personal issue.
Saya belum siap membahasnya sekarang; beri saya waktu sampai besok.
I am not ready to discuss it yet; give me until tomorrow.
The later deadline makes the expectation especially clear.
Jangan changes the speech act
Jangan does not merely say that an event is false. It tells or urges someone not to make it happen.
Jangan menaruh tas di depan pintu darurat.
Do not put bags in front of the emergency exit.
Tolong jangan menelepon setelah pukul sepuluh malam.
Please don't call after ten at night.
Jangan sampai dokumen asli itu hilang.
Make sure that original document does not get lost.
Third-person jangan can mean “do not let X...” or express a wish against an event; it does not become a neutral factual negator.
Jangan biarkan anak-anak bermain dekat jalan raya.
Do not let the children play near the main road.
Short answers preserve the distinction
A: Apakah Dimas ikut? B: Tidak.
A: Is Dimas joining? B: No.
A: Apakah ini kartu Anda? B: Bukan.
A: Is this your card? B: No, it isn't.
A: Sudah selesai? B: Belum.
A: Is it finished? B: Not yet.
English can answer all three with no. Indonesian short answers reveal whether the speaker denies an event, rejects an identity, or reports noncompletion.
Common Mistakes
1. Tidak before a noun identity
❌ Raka tidak ketua kelompok kami.
Incorrect—ketua kelompok is a noun identity.
✅ Raka bukan ketua kelompok kami.
Raka is not our group leader.
2. Bukan before an ordinary adjective
❌ Ruang tunggu bukan luas.
Incorrect without contrastive correction—luas is an adjective predicate.
✅ Ruang tunggu tidak luas, tetapi cukup nyaman.
The waiting room is not spacious, but it is comfortable enough.
3. Bukan before a plain verbal denial
❌ Sari bukan datang ke kantor hari ini.
Incorrect for a neutral denial of coming.
✅ Sari tidak datang ke kantor hari ini.
Sari is not coming to the office today.
4. Tidak when “not yet” is intended
❌ Kereta dari Yogyakarta tidak tiba.
Wrong for an expected train that has not arrived yet; this sounds like a plain nonarrival.
The train from Yogyakarta has not arrived yet; staff estimate that it is twenty minutes late.
5. Belum when a firm disagreement is intended
Incorrect for an explicit settled rejection—belum presents agreement as not yet realized rather than simply denied.
I do not agree with that policy and will not support it.
6. Tidak in a prohibition
❌ Tidak sentuh kabel yang terkelupas itu!
Incorrect as a Standard Indonesian prohibition.
✅ Jangan sentuh kabel yang terkelupas itu!
Do not touch that exposed wire!
7. Jangan in a factual statement
❌ Dia jangan bekerja pada hari Sabtu.
Wrong for ‘She does not work on Saturdays’; this sounds like a directive against her working.
✅ Dia tidak bekerja pada hari Sabtu.
She does not work on Saturdays.
8. Wrong short answer to sudah
❌ A: Sudah makan? B: Tidak.
Wrong when the intended answer is ‘not yet’; tidak gives a flat denial.
✅ A: Sudah makan? B: Belum, nanti setelah rapat.
A: Have you eaten? B: Not yet, later after the meeting.
9. Wrong short answer to an identity question
❌ A: Ini tas Ibu? B: Tidak, tas saya yang hitam.
Less accurate for rejecting identity; the intended answer is bukan.
✅ A: Ini tas Ibu? B: Bukan, tas saya yang hitam.
A: Is this your bag, ma'am? B: No, mine is the black one.
10. Losing contrastive scope
❌ Tidak saya yang memindahkan berkas itu.
Incorrect contrastive identification.
It was not me who moved that file, but the archives officer.
11. Confusing tidak pernah and belum pernah
Incorrect—tidak pernah reports no occurrence in the relevant time span; it does not itself rule out a future occurrence.
I have never been to Maluku yet, but I hope I can go next year.
12. Using bukan for nonexistence
There is no ATM in that village, so bring cash.
