English uses where far beyond literal places: the reason why, a situation where, a system in which. Copying that connector as di mana produces Indonesian such as alasan di mana or sistem di mana even though no location is being asked about. Natural Indonesian usually restructures the clause with yang, a relational noun such as tempat, a licensed -i verb, or a new clause.
This does not mean di mana is never a relative connector. It is first a true locative question, and restricted formal prose also uses it after genuinely locative heads. The practical problem is treating it as universal. Spelling errors here reveal a deeper transfer error: English keeps a wh form, while Indonesian often changes the verb or names the relation directly.
Diagnose the relation, not the English word
Before writing di mana, ask four questions:
- Is this an actual question whose answer is di + place? Use interrogative di mana.
- Does a noun mean a literal place in formal technical or legal prose? Relative di mana may be possible, although tempat is often lighter.
- Can yang make the head an actor, patient, cause, property, or content noun? Restructure with compatible voice.
- Can tempat or a licensed -i verb turn the place into a normal Indonesian argument? Prefer that native strategy.
True di mana asks for a location
Interrogative di mana means “at/in where?” and is written as two words. It can remain in situ or be fronted.
Kalian menginap di mana selama konferensi berlangsung?
Where are you staying while the conference is taking place?
Where does the officer keep the original copy of the contract?
I do not yet know where the follow-up meeting will be held. (embedded question)
These are questions, direct or embedded. The unknown location could be answered with di hotel, di lemari arsip, or di ruang utama. That answer test distinguishes them from a relative modifier.
❌ Saya belum tahu dimana rapat lanjutan akan diadakan.
Incorrect spelling—interrogative di mana consists of a separate preposition and mana.
I do not yet know where the follow-up meeting will be held.
The location-question guide distinguishes di mana, ke mana, and dari mana.
The place where: use tempat or a locative head
For a neutral place relative, Indonesian commonly uses tempat + clause. The head itself supplies the locative relation; no wh connector is needed.
Incorrect doubled location—di mana and di sana both represent the same place inside the relative.
✅ Ini kafe tempat kami pertama kali bertemu.
This is the cafe where we first met.
Incorrect doubled location—the relative repeats the village as di sana.
✅ Mereka kembali ke desa tempat neneknya lahir.
They returned to the village where their grandmother was born.
Incorrect doubled location—the relative expresses the same building twice.
✅ Saya lupa nama gedung tempat pameran itu diselenggarakan.
I have forgotten the name of the building where the exhibition was held.
Tempat can follow a specific place noun—kafe tempat, desa tempat, gedung tempat—or stand as the head itself: tempat kami menunggu “the place where we waited.” It need not take yang in this construction.
Formal locative di mana is restricted, not forbidden
Formal, legal, technical, and institutional prose does use di mana after a literal area, zone, laboratory, or other spatial domain (formal).
This regulation applies in the zone where heavy vehicles are prohibited. (formal/legal)
The report identifies the laboratory in which the samples were tested. (formal/technical)
These are defensible because zona and laboratorium are genuine locations. Even here, many editors prefer zona tempat kendaraan berat dilarang masuk and laboratorium tempat sampel diuji. The choice involves genre and editorial style, not a claim that every written di mana is ungrammatical.
By contrast, an abstract noun does not become a location just because English chooses where.
❌ Kami menghadapi keadaan di mana biaya terus naik setiap bulan.
Abstract where-calque—the intended relation is a situation characterized by rising costs.
✅ Kami menghadapi biaya yang terus naik setiap bulan.
We face costs that continue to rise every month.
The reason why: state the causal content
English packages a reason as a place-like relative. Indonesian can place a clause directly after alasan, use mengapa in an explicit reason construction, or recast the noun with yang menyebabkan/membuat, depending on meaning.
Incorrect abstract relative—alasan is not a location introduced by di mana.
✅ Alasan pembatalan penerbangan itu belum diumumkan.
The reason for that flight's cancellation has not been announced.
❌ Kami ingin mengetahui alasan di mana harga tiket berubah mendadak.
Incorrect calque—the clause asks why the price changed, not where a reason is located.
✅ Kami ingin mengetahui alasan mengapa harga tiket berubah mendadak.
We want to know why the ticket price changed suddenly.
Incorrect relation—the delay caused the missed train and should be expressed causally.
✅ Keterlambatan itu menyebabkan kami melewatkan kereta terakhir.
That delay caused us to miss the last train.
There is no one mechanical repair. Alasan penerbangan dibatalkan names the reason relation compactly; alasan mengapa introduces the explanatory question; menyebabkan makes the cause a clause argument.
The system in which: make the relation explicit
With abstract systems, methods, agreements, and procedures, decide what the system does. Yang can make it the actor or patient of a predicate; dalam sistem ini can establish a discourse frame; a purpose phrase can name its use.
❌ Kami memakai sistem di mana pengguna memeriksa status permohonan di dalamnya.
Incorrect doubled relation—the abstract system is expressed by both di mana and di dalamnya.
✅ Kami memakai sistem yang memungkinkan pengguna memeriksa status permohonan.
We use a system that allows users to check their application status.
Imprecise abstract connector—the procedure consists of a defined checking practice.
Under this procedure, every document is checked twice.
Transferred relative strategy—the method can be described by its function.
The company applies a method for comparing old and new data.
The distinguishing insight is visible here: English retains in which, while Indonesian may create memungkinkan + object, a sentence frame dalam prosedur ini, or a purpose phrase untuk membandingkan.
Yang clauses: give the head a core role
Use yang when the head can naturally be actor, patient, cause, property-bearer, or content source inside the relative clause. Voice must match that role.
Incorrect relation and missing actor—the application itself performs the recording function.
This is an application that automatically records all daily expenses.
❌ Kami membaca laporan di mana menjelaskan penyebab gangguan listrik.
Incorrect connector—the report is the actor of menjelaskan and requires yang.
✅ Kami membaca laporan yang menjelaskan penyebab gangguan listrik.
We read a report that explains the cause of the power outage.
Incorrect object relative—the form is the patient and needs object voice.
The form I completed yesterday is still on the table.
In the second repair, laporan is the actor of menjelaskan. In the third, formulir is the patient of saya isi. Yang alone does not choose voice; the head's role does.
-i strategies: promote a licensed location
Some -i verbs select a location as their object.
Incorrect doubled location—di mana and di sana resume the same apartment.
The apartment I lived in during my internship has been renovated.
Incorrect doubled location—di mana and di situ both refer to the chair.
The chair the child sat on is still wet from the rain.
❌ Jalan di mana rombongan kami lewat di sana tadi malam sekarang ditutup.
Incorrect doubled location—the road is repeated by di mana and di sana.
✅ Jalan yang kami lalui tadi malam sekarang ditutup.
The road we traveled along last night is now closed.
Do not attach -i freely to any verb. Lexical restrictions are real: for a hotel, hotel tempat kami menginap is more natural than inventing a derivative meaning “hotel we slept at.” The oblique-relative guide maps these alternatives in depth.
Common Mistakes
1. Using di mana after every abstract noun
Incorrect abstract relative—the clause describes the problem's content, not its location.
There is a problem that prevents customers from receiving the verification code.
2. Replacing every literal place relative with di mana
Incorrect doubled location—the relative connector and resumptive di sana express the same place relation twice.
✅ Warung tempat kami biasa sarapan tutup minggu ini.
The food stall where we usually have breakfast is closed this week.
3. Using di mana where yang supplies a core role
Incorrect relative structure—the book itself is the actor of membahas.
I am looking for a book that discusses the city's history.
4. Deleting the location relation without promotion
❌ Apartemen yang kami tinggal tahun lalu berada dekat stasiun.
Incorrect standard relation—tinggal requires di unless licensed tinggali promotes the place.
✅ Apartemen yang kami tinggali tahun lalu berada dekat stasiun.
The apartment we lived in last year is near the station.
5. Treating -i as an automatic repair
Incorrect lexical choice—tiduri does not neutrally mean stay at a lodging.
✅ Penginapan tempat kami menginap selama liburan menghadap ke laut.
The lodging where we stayed during the vacation faces the sea.
Key Takeaways
- Di mana is primarily locative interrogative; restricted formal relatives require genuinely locative heads.
- Neutral place relatives often use tempat + clause.
- Abstract English where/in which normally requires yang, a discourse frame, purpose, cause, or another restructuring.
- Licensed -i verbs can promote a location: rumah yang saya tinggali.
- Native relative syntax often reorganizes the predicate instead of retaining a wh form.
