Indonesian can express manner with dengan + property, as in dengan cepat “quickly” and dengan hati-hati “carefully.” It can also use a bare adjective: Dia bekerja cepat “He/She works quickly.” The bare form is not missing an equivalent of English -ly; Indonesian simply allows property words to function adverbially.
Dengan has a wider job than manner. It can introduce an instrument, accompaniment, or associated circumstance, so context must distinguish dengan cepat “quickly,” dengan pisau “with a knife,” and dengan Rina “with Rina.” This page focuses on those contrasts while leaving aspect markers and discourse particles to dedicated pages.
Dengan plus an adjective
The core manner pattern is:
verb + dengan + adjective
Petugas menjelaskan prosedurnya dengan jelas.
The officer explained the procedure clearly.
Rina menjawab pertanyaan itu dengan tenang.
Rina answered the question calmly.
Silakan berbicara dengan sopan kepada pelanggan.
Please speak politely to customers.
The phrase explicitly presents the property as the manner of the event. Jelas describes the explaining, tenang the answering, and sopan the speaking. The adjective stays unchanged, and dengan is written separately.
Bare adjective versus dengan phrase
Compare the required pair:
Dia bekerja cepat karena tenggatnya sudah dekat.
He/She works quickly because the deadline is near.
Dia bekerja dengan cepat karena tenggatnya sudah dekat.
He/She works quickly because the deadline is near.
Both are Standard Indonesian. The bare cepat is compact and tightly integrated with bekerja. Dengan cepat packages the manner as an explicit phrase, which can sound more deliberate or suit careful exposition.
| Bare manner | Dengan phrase | Typical contrast |
|---|---|---|
| bicara pelan | bicara dengan pelan | bare form is usually lighter |
| bekerja cepat | bekerja dengan cepat | dengan makes manner explicit |
| menulis rapi | menulis dengan rapi | both are natural; phrase is more explicit |
Lexical preference matters. Bicara pelan is very natural; membaca dengan teliti often sounds more complete than bare membaca teliti. There is no mechanical rule requiring dengan for every adjective or banning it from familiar ones.
Tolong baca kontraknya dengan teliti sebelum menandatangani.
Please read the contract carefully before signing it.
Bicaralah pelan agar kakek bisa mengikuti.
Speak slowly so grandfather can follow.
Dengan plus a noun phrase
The complement of dengan need not be an adjective. A noun phrase can describe the style, attitude, or accompanying feature of an action.
Mereka menyambut para tamu dengan senyum lebar.
They welcomed the guests with broad smiles.
Direktur membuka rapat dengan penjelasan singkat.
The director opened the meeting with a brief explanation.
Ia menyampaikan kritik itu dengan nada tenang.
He/She delivered the criticism in a calm tone.
In dengan senyum lebar and dengan nada tenang, the noun phrase supplies an associated expression or voice quality. English may translate the relation with with, in, or an -ly adverb. Indonesian keeps the broader associative preposition dengan.
Phrases with penuh are also common in careful prose (formal):
Tim bekerja dengan penuh perhatian selama pemeriksaan.
The team worked with full attention during the inspection. (formal)
Instrument uses
With a concrete tool, dengan commonly means “with/using.”
Dia memotong roti dengan pisau tajam.
He/She cut the bread with a sharp knife.
Saya menandatangani dokumen itu dengan pena biru.
I signed the document with a blue pen.
Kami mengirim berkasnya dengan aplikasi ini.
We sent the file using this app.
The dengan phrase now identifies the instrument or channel, not the manner. The difference comes from the complement: cepat is a property; pisau and pena are tools; aplikasi is the means of transmission.
Accompaniment and potential ambiguity
With a person, dengan often means accompaniment:
Saya pergi ke pameran dengan Rina.
I went to the exhibition with Rina.
Some sentences allow more than one attachment or role:
Doni melihat burung itu dengan teropong.
Doni saw the bird with a telescope. (normally the telescope is Doni's instrument)
The likely reading makes teropong the instrument of seeing, but a larger noun phrase could in principle describe a bird associated with a telescope in an unusual context. When a practical instruction must be unambiguous, name the action explicitly:
Doni menggunakan teropong untuk melihat burung itu.
Doni used a telescope to see the bird.
Likewise, Dia membuka kotak dengan Rina means that Rina accompanied or helped the actor, while Dia membuka kotak dengan kunci makes the key an instrument. The preposition itself does not label the semantic role; the nouns and event make it recoverable.
Initial manner phrases and information structure
A dengan phrase can be fronted to establish how the event unfolds:
Dengan hati-hati Rina membuka paket yang rusak itu.
Carefully, Rina opened the damaged package.
Dengan cepat petugas menutup jalan setelah kecelakaan.
The officers quickly closed the road after the accident.
No comma is required merely because the short manner phrase comes first. Initial placement foregrounds the manner; final placement—Rina membuka paket itu dengan hati-hati—keeps the event as topic and supplies manner later.
Manner mobility is not unlimited. A phrase placed beside a noun may appear to modify that noun rather than the event. Use the adverb scope page for complex attachment choices.
Bare reduplicated manner
Indonesian also has lexical reduplicated manner expressions that normally need no dengan:
Pelan-pelan dia berdiri dan berjalan ke pintu.
Slowly, he/she stood up and walked to the door.
Baca baik-baik sebelum menjawab.
Read carefully before answering.
Mereka diam-diam menyiapkan pesta kejutan.
They secretly prepared a surprise party.
Write pelan-pelan, baik-baik, and diam-diam with hyphens. Adding dengan to every one of these can make the sentence heavy or nonidiomatic.
Orthography
Write dengan separately from its complement: dengan cepat, dengan pisau. Do not add English -ly to an Indonesian word. Preserve hyphens in lexical reduplications such as pelan-pelan and baik-baik. Normal Standard Indonesian uses no accent marks in these forms.
Common Mistakes
1. Adding English -ly
❌ Dia bekerja cepatly agar selesai sebelum pukul lima.
Incorrect — Indonesian does not derive adverbs with English -ly.
✅ Dia bekerja cepat agar selesai sebelum pukul lima.
He/She works quickly to finish before five.
2. Using dengan for every manner word
❌ Dia dengan cepat bekerja dengan rajin setiap hari.
Overloaded manner phrasing for a simple habitual description.
✅ Dia bekerja cepat dan rapi setiap hari.
He/She works quickly and neatly every day.
3. Doubling two manner markers
❌ Tolong periksa datanya dengan secara teliti.
Incorrect double marking — choose dengan or secara.
✅ Tolong periksa datanya dengan teliti.
Please check the data carefully.
4. Leaving instrument attachment ambiguous
❌ Rina melihat pria dengan teropong.
Ambiguous — Rina may be using the telescope, or the man may be associated with it.
✅ Rina menggunakan teropong untuk melihat pria itu.
Rina used a telescope to see the man.
5. Dropping reduplication hyphens
❌ Baca baik baik sebelum menandatangani.
Incorrect spelling of the lexical reduplication.
✅ Baca baik-baik sebelum menandatangani.
Read carefully before signing.
Key Takeaways
- Dengan + adjective makes manner explicit: dengan cepat, dengan tenang.
- Bare adjectives can function adverbially: Dia bekerja cepat.
- Dengan + noun phrase may express manner, associated circumstance, instrument, or accompaniment.
- Context and complement type recover the role; rewrite when instrument attachment is ambiguous.
- Do not add English -ly, overuse dengan, or drop reduplication hyphens.
