The same Hungarian base can support several derived verbs, but suffixes do not behave like interchangeable pieces of English paraphrase. A causative changes the participant structure, a potential changes modal force, and a frequentative changes how an event unfolds. Lexical verb-forming suffixes may contribute only a broad association. This page focuses on decisions; the full architecture is on the forms page.
Direct action or causative arrangement?
An underived or -ít verb says that the grammatical subject performs or directly causes the change. A causative in -at/-et ~ -tat/-tet adds a causer who makes or arranges for another participant to act.
Szombaton lefestem a konyhát.
I'm painting the kitchen on Saturday.
Szombaton lefestetem a konyhát.
I'm having the kitchen painted on Saturday.
The first makes the speaker the painter. The second makes the speaker the organizer/customer; it need not mean coercion. If the causee is named with a transitive base, Hungarian commonly uses -val/-vel because the original object already occupies the accusative role.
A gyakornok kijavította a hibákat.
The intern corrected the errors.
A szerkesztő a gyakornokkal javíttatta ki a hibákat.
The editor had the intern correct the errors.
Under focus, ki follows the verb in the second sentence. This word order marks a gyakornokkal as the contrasted causee; it does not alter the derivational layers inside javíttatta.
Causative or an explicit social verb?
The morphological causative leaves the social relation underspecified. Megkér valakit, hogy..., rávesz valakit, hogy..., engedi, hogy..., and kényszerít valakit, hogy... distinguish asking, persuading, allowing, and forcing.
Elolvastattam Annával a levelet.
I had Anna read the letter.
Megkértem Annát, hogy olvassa el a levelet.
I asked Anna to read the letter.
The first is compact and task-oriented; the second explicitly presents a polite request. In sensitive interpersonal contexts, the finite construction avoids an unintended authoritarian tone. Conversely, institutional descriptions often favor the causative because the mechanism is irrelevant.
Potential suffix or tud + infinitive?
-hat/-het typically expresses permission, opportunity, or feasibility in the current circumstances. Tud + infinitive often expresses acquired skill, knowledge how, or practical capacity. They overlap when both skill and circumstances are salient.
Már tudok magyarul levelet írni.
I can already write a letter in Hungarian.
Most már írhatok levelet a fogvatartott rokonomnak.
I am now allowed to write a letter to my detained relative.
Nem tudok belépni, mert elfelejtettem a jelszavamat.
I can't log in because I forgot my password.
In the third example, nem tudok belépni naturally describes failed practical ability, even though the obstacle is temporary. Nem léphetek be would more readily mean prohibition or lack of authorization. Context, animacy, and control prevent a perfectly categorical rule.
Transitive -ít or intransitive middle change?
Paired verbs contrast an external causer with a changing subject. English often uses one ambitransitive verb, so learners must notice Hungarian valency.
A technikus javítja a hangminőséget.
The technician is improving the sound quality.
A hangminőség fokozatosan javul.
The sound quality is gradually improving.
A friss levegő lehűti a szobát.
The fresh air cools the room down.
Éjszakára lehűl a szoba.
The room cools down by night.
Javít/javul, hűt/hűl, szépít/szépül, and készít/készül are lexical pairs, not outputs of one exceptionless operation. Learn both members with a subject–object sketch.
Reflexive-middle verb or magát object?
Some routine self-directed actions have derived verbs: mosakodik, öltözködik, fésülködik. Other verbs require magát when subject and object refer to the same person: látja magát, hibáztatja magát.
Dóra a tükör előtt fésülködik.
Dóra is combing her hair in front of the mirror.
Dóra alig ismerte fel magát a régi fényképen.
Dóra barely recognized herself in the old photograph.
There is no safe procedure of attaching -kod/-ked/-köd to an arbitrary verb. Forms such as gondolkodik “think” and foglalkozik “deal with” are lexical verbs whose modern meaning is not literal reflexivity.
Plain event or frequentative/attenuative event?
A plain verb can describe one bounded event. -gat/-get often removes or weakens that boundary, presenting repetition, intermittent action, or casual engagement.
Este elolvastam a tanulmányt.
I read the study through in the evening.
Este olvasgattam a tanulmányt, de nem jutottam a végére.
I read bits of the study in the evening, but I didn't reach the end.
A rendőr röviden kikérdezte a tanút.
The police officer briefly questioned the witness.
A gyerek egész úton azt kérdezgette, mikor érünk oda.
The child kept asking all the way when we would arrive.
The prefix el- and telic context make completion prominent in the first reading pair; olvasgat profiles unbounded portions. Frequentative derivation can carry an informal, affectionate, or irritated coloring, so neutral (formal) reports usually prefer a plain verb plus an explicit time phrase.
-l and -z: derivational family or false segmentation?
Many denominal verbs are transparent enough to aid memory: vas → vasal, grill → grillez, telefon → telefonozik. Others include borrowed or historically complex endings that speakers treat as part of a whole lexeme.
Reggelente a szomszéd vasal, miközben rádiót hallgat.
Every morning the neighbor irons while listening to the radio.
A turisták a téren fényképeztek és beszélgettek.
The tourists took photographs and chatted in the square.
It is useful to recognize fénykép → fényképez, but not to infer that every verb ending in z has a synchronically usable noun base. Hoz “bring,” for example, is not ho + -z. Orthographic coincidence is not morphological evidence.
Register and information structure
Compact derived verbs are neutral in daily speech, but very long chains can burden listeners. Formal administrative prose tolerates complex possibilities such as módosíttatható “can be caused/arranged to be modified,” while conversation often names the agent and action separately.
Az ügyfél az adatait az ügyfélszolgálattal is módosíttathatja.
A customer can also have their details changed by customer service. (formal)
Hívd fel az ügyfélszolgálatot, és kérd meg őket, hogy módosítsák az adataidat.
Call customer service and ask them to change your details. (informal)
The formal derivative keeps the customer as requester while backgrounding the employee who performs the change. The finite informal version makes the interaction explicit. Hungarian word order can focus a causee or object, but derivational suffix order stays fixed.
Decision tree
- Does the subject perform the action directly? Use the lexical verb or a transitive -ít verb.
- Does the subject arrange for another actor to perform it? Use a causative, unless the social manner needs megkér, rávesz, enged, or kényszerít.
- Is the issue permission or situational possibility? Choose -hat/-het. Is it learned skill? Start with tud + infinitive.
- Does the subject undergo a change without an expressed external causer? Look for an established middle partner.
- Is the action self-directed? Use an established reflexive-family verb if one exists; otherwise use magát.
- Do repetition, small installments, or casual duration matter? Consider a frequentative.
- Is a visible l or z actually a productive boundary? Verify that a modern base–derived pair exists.
Diagnostic exercise
Choose the natural option.
- You pay a shop to replace a screen: kicserélem / kicseréltetem a kijelzőt.
- You possess the learned skill of reading music: tudok kottát olvasni / olvashatok kottát.
- Soup becomes cool on its own: lehűl / lehűt a leves.
- You browse photos without finishing a task: nézem / nézegetem a képeket.
Answers: (1) kicseréltetem, because another person performs the replacement. (2) tudok kottát olvasni, acquired ability. (3) lehűl, the soup undergoes the change; lehűt needs an object. (4) nézegetem, because unhurried repeated viewing is foregrounded; nézem remains possible if simple ongoing viewing is meant.
Common Mistakes
❌ Holnap javítom az órámat az órással.
Wrong for the intended arrangement: this says I repair it, with the watchmaker as companion or instrument.
✅ Holnap megjavíttatom az órámat az órással.
Tomorrow I'll have the watchmaker repair my watch.
❌ A víz gyorsan melegíti a napon.
Incorrect valency: melegíti requires an external subject and an object.
✅ A víz gyorsan melegszik a napon.
The water warms up quickly in the sun.
❌ A kisfiam már úszhat.
Wrong for the intended acquired skill: this normally says that my son may go swimming now.
✅ A kisfiam már tud úszni.
My little son can already swim.
Key Takeaways
- Direct and causative verbs differ in who performs the base event.
- The causative does not encode whether someone was asked, allowed, persuaded, or forced.
- -hat/-het favors permission and circumstantial possibility; tud favors knowledge and ability.
- Transitive change-of-state and middle partners must be learned as lexical valency pairs.
- Frequentatives change event shape and often add discourse coloring.
- Segment only demonstrably active derivation; established lexical meaning outranks visual resemblance.
