tanít: Complete Conjugation and Usage

Tanít means “teach,” but Hungarian can organize the learner and the subject matter in several ways. In angolt tanít a gyerekeknek, the subject matter is the accusative object and the learners are dative. In úszni tanítja a gyerekeket, the learners are the accusative object and the skill is an infinitive. In önállóságra tanítja őket, the result or lesson takes -ra/-re.

The verb is historically and structurally related to tanul “learn”: the -ít formation presents causation, roughly “cause to learn.” In modern usage, however, tanít is a lexical verb with its own established frames. The causative overview provides the broader derivational system; this page gives the complete morphology and valency of tanít.

The accusative participant determines the conjugation. Tanítok egy új csoportot has an indefinite learner object; tanítom az új csoportot has a definite learner object. If subject matter is the object, the same rule applies: történelmet tanít, but a történelmet tanítja.

Judit két kezdő csoportot tanít a nyelviskolában.

Judit teaches two beginner groups at the language school.

Én tanítom az esti csoportot, a kollégám pedig a délelőttit.

I teach the evening group, while my colleague teaches the morning one.

Az új oktató statisztikát tanít a mesterszakos hallgatóknak.

The new lecturer teaches statistics to the master’s students.

My grandfather taught geography at the same secondary school for decades.

Szívesen tanítanám ezt a kurzust jövő tavasszal is.

I would gladly teach this course again next spring.

The past contains a genuine long tt: tanított. Preserve that consonant length in both spelling and pronunciation. First-person tanítottam is identical across the two object conjugations, but other persons reveal the contrast clearly: tanítottál egy csoportot versus tanítottad a csoportot.

Imperative–subjunctive: taníts-

Final long-vowel-plus-t forms the imperative stem in -ts-: taníts, not tanítj. In third-person and several plural forms, the spelling has tanítson, tanítsunk, tanítsatok. Definite short 2sg adds -d: tanítsd.

Fontos, hogy az iskola önálló gondolkodásra tanítsa a diákokat.

It is important that the school teach students to think independently.

💡
Build the imperative from taníts-: indefinite taníts, definite tanítsd, third-person tanítson/tanítsa. Neither tanítj nor tanítd is standard.

Learners, content, skills, and results

Hungarian chooses a frame according to which participant is presented as the direct object:

FrameUseExample
tanít valamit valakinekcontent as object; learner as dative recipientzenét tanít a gyerekeknek
tanít valakit + infinitivelearner as object; acquired skillúszni tanítja a gyerekeket
tanít valakit valamirelearner as object; subject, lesson, or result in -ra/-retürelemre tanítja őket
tanít valaholinstitution as locationaz egyetemen tanít

Do not mark both learner and subject matter as accusative in the same simple frame. Select a perspective: franciát tanítok a felnőtteknek or franciára tanítom a felnőtteket. The first is the more neutral way to name a school subject.

A nagynéném franciát tanít felnőtteknek egy esti iskolában.

My aunt teaches French to adults at an evening school.

Az edző helyesen lélegezni tanítja a kezdő úszókat.

The coach teaches the beginner swimmers to breathe correctly.

A közös kert gondosságra és türelemre tanította a gyerekeket.

The shared garden taught the children care and patience.

Megtanít, other prefixes, and information structure

Bare tanít can describe an occupation or ongoing process. Megtanít highlights an achieved result: the learner acquires the skill or lesson. Betanít often means train someone for a task or job; újratanít means retrain or teach again. These derivatives remain transitive.

A tapasztalt műszakvezető három nap alatt betanította az új kollégát.

The experienced shift supervisor trained the new colleague in three days.

A gyógytornász a sérülés után újra megtanította járni a beteget.

After the injury, the physiotherapist taught the patient to walk again.

Neutral affirmative megtanította joins the prefix. A direct command, negation, question word, or preverbal focus normally separates it: tanítsd meg, nem tanította meg, ki tanította meg?, AZ ÉDESANYJA tanította meg.

A tanfolyamon nem tanították meg a résztvevőket arra, hogyan frissítsék a programot.

The course did not teach the participants how to update the program.

A NAGYAPJA tanította meg sakkozni, nem az iskolai klub.

It was HIS GRANDFATHER who taught him to play chess, not the school club.

💡
English “teach someone something” has two unmarked objects in sequence. Hungarian must choose a case frame: content object + dative learner, or accusative learner + -ra/-re result or infinitive skill.

Common Mistakes

❌ Matematikát tanítok a diákokat.

Incorrect — this frame cannot mark both content and learners as accusative.

✅ Matematikát tanítok a végzős diákoknak.

I teach mathematics to the final-year students.

❌ A tanár tanít az új szabályt a csoportnak.

Incorrect — the definite subject matter requires the definite form tanítja.

✅ A tanár az új szabályt tanítja a csoportnak.

The teacher is teaching the new rule to the group.

❌ Tanítj meg rendesen kerékpározni!

Incorrect — the imperative stem is taníts-.

✅ Taníts meg rendesen kerékpározni, mielőtt forgalomba megyek!

Teach me to cycle properly before I ride in traffic!

❌ Nem megtanította a kutyát visszajönni hívásra.

Incorrect neutral prefix order after negation.

✅ Nem tanította meg a kutyát visszajönni hívásra.

She did not teach the dog to come back when called.

Key Takeaways

  • Tanít is transitive and means cause someone to learn; tanul presents the learner’s activity.
  • Content may be accusative with a dative learner, while an accusative learner combines with an infinitive or -ra/-re result.
  • The imperative stem is taníts-, with definite 2sg tanítsd.
  • Megtanít highlights successful acquisition; betanít commonly means train for a task.
  • Object definiteness and prefix position must both be calculated from the whole clause.
