This dialogue takes place in a mid-priced restaurant in Pécs. Júlia and Márk have reserved a table, order a meal, and check an allergy. Read the complete exchange first; the analysis then shows how articles, case endings, omitted pronouns, and polite verb forms cooperate.
Complete dialogue
Pincér: Jó estét kívánok! Foglaltak asztalt?
Waiter: Good evening! Have you reserved a table?
Júlia: Igen, Szabó névre, két főre.
Júlia: Yes, under the name Szabó, for two people.
Pincér: Erre tessék! Hozhatok valamit inni?
Waiter: This way, please! May I bring you something to drink?
Márk: Nekem egy szénsavmentes vizet, kérem.
Márk: A still water for me, please.
Júlia: Én a házi limonádét kérem, cukor nélkül.
Júlia: I’ll have the house lemonade, without sugar.
Pincér: Választottak már?
Waiter: Have you decided yet?
Júlia: A gombalevest kérem, utána pedig egy adag grillezett zöldséget.
Júlia: I’ll have the mushroom soup, followed by a portion of grilled vegetables.
Márk: Nekem rántott sajt lesz rizzsel. A szószban van dió? Allergiás vagyok rá.
Márk: I’ll have fried cheese with rice. Are there nuts in the sauce? I’m allergic to them.
Pincér: Nincs, de a desszert nyomokban diót tartalmazhat.
Waiter: No, but the dessert may contain traces of nuts.
Márk: Akkor desszertet nem kérek. Köszönöm.
Márk: Then I won’t have dessert. Thank you.
Pincér: Rendben. Jó étvágyat kívánok!
Waiter: All right. Enjoy your meal!
The waiter uses formal plural forms because he is addressing two guests. The guests speak to him politely without repeatedly saying Ön. This pronoun omission is normal: person and number are already visible in the verb and situation.

The literal column is a diagnostic aid, not a model English translation. Hungarian meanings are distributed across suffixes that idiomatic English expresses with prepositions, articles, or entire formulas.
Six grammar decisions that make the exchange natural
1. Formal address without Ön
Foglaltak? and Választottak? are morphologically third-person plural, but here they politely address Júlia and Márk. Repeating Önök would be possible for contrast but unnecessary in routine service. Tessék is a conventional polite directive, not literally translated word by word.
2. Reservation details use -ra/-re
Szabó névre and két főre mark the name and number for which the arrangement was made. English uses under and for; Hungarian uses the directional/target ending -ra/-re. Omitting it gives label-like fragments rather than the conventional reservation formula.
3. Bare and definite dishes select different verb forms
Egy szénsavmentes vizet introduces an indefinite order, and the verb is omitted because kérem is recoverable. A házi limonádét kérem identifies a menu item and uses definite kérem. Hungarian often places the chosen item before the verb, where it carries the main contrast.
4. Quantity leaves the noun singular
After egy adag, the food appears as grillezett zöldséget. Hungarian also keeps nouns singular directly after numerals: két kávé, not két kávék. English plural marking is not copied.
5. Allergies use a predicate and a case pronoun
Allergiás vagyok rá literally uses “allergic I-am onto-it.” Rá replaces a -ra/-re complement; it does not mean spatial “onto” here. The explicitly named allergen can be allergiás vagyok a dióra.
6. Focus explains desszertet nem kérek
Neutral Nem kérek desszertet rejects dessert. Desszertet nem kérek contrasts dessert with the food already ordered: “Dessert, I won’t have.” This object-before-negation order is not random scrambling; prosody normally places contrastive stress on desszertet.
7. Hospitality formulas are constructions
Jó étvágyat kívánok contains an accusative object and first-person verb, but English conventionally says “Enjoy your meal.” A literal “I wish good appetite” is understandable yet pragmatically foreign. See the address and service-register guide for the wider politeness system.
Diagnosing an English-shaped rendering
A plausible learner version is Én kérek a gombaleves és egy grillezett zöldségek. It carries English word order and number into Hungarian. The article makes a gombaleves definite, so the noun needs accusative -t and the verb needs definite kérem. After the measure expression, zöldség stays singular and also takes accusative:
❌ Én kérek a gombaleves és egy adag grillezett zöldségek.
Incorrect — missing accusative marking, mismatched definiteness, and an English-style plural after the quantity.
✅ A gombalevest kérem, utána pedig egy adag grillezett zöldséget.
I’ll have the mushroom soup, followed by a portion of grilled vegetables.
The corrected sentence also omits én, because kérem already identifies the speaker. An overt én would normally contrast Júlia’s order with Márk’s, as it does naturally in the drinks exchange.
Common Mistakes
❌ Kérek a házi limonádét.
Incorrect — the definite dish requires kérem.
✅ A házi limonádét kérem jég nélkül.
I’ll have the house lemonade without ice.
❌ Két leveseket kérünk.
Incorrect — the noun remains singular after a numeral.
✅ Két levest kérünk, és az egyiket tejföl nélkül.
We’d like two soups, one of them without sour cream.
❌ Allergiás vagyok dió.
Incorrect — the allergen needs -ra/-re.
✅ Allergiás vagyok a dióra, ezért desszertet nem kérek.
I’m allergic to nuts, so I won’t have dessert.
❌ Meg rendelhetem most a főételt?
Incorrect spelling — the neutral prefixed infinitive is one word.
✅ Megrendelhetem most a főételt?
May I order the main course now?
Key Takeaways
- Formal service interaction often uses third-person forms without an overt Ön/Önök.
- Case endings express reservation target, ordered item, allergy complement, and other roles.
- Indefinite kérek egy… contrasts with definite a…-t kérem.
- Nouns remain singular after numerals and quantity expressions.
- Word order and stress distinguish neutral refusal from contrastive desszertet nem kérek.
