Dates, Years, Ages, and Centuries: Meanings and Usage

Knowing how to write 2026. szeptember 13. is only the beginning. In real Hungarian, a date can label a document, locate an event in time, mark a deadline, name an anniversary, or provide the background period for a story. Each job selects a different suffix or construction. Review the punctuation and paradigms on the dates forms page; this page organizes the same forms by what speakers are doing with them.

Identifying a date versus locating an event

A date used as a label or answer to Hányadika van? “What is the date?” appears in its bare ordinal form. The written day therefore has a point. In speech, the day normally has the possessive-looking ordinal form -dika/-dike or an irregular equivalent such as elseje “the first.”

Hányadika van ma? — Szeptember tizenharmadika.

What is today's date? — The thirteenth of September.

A számlán a teljesítés dátuma 2026. szeptember 13.

On the invoice, the date of performance is 13 September 2026.

To locate an event on that day, Hungarian normally uses -n, realized in written digit forms as -án/-én: szeptember 13-án. English uses the preposition “on”; Hungarian packages the relation into the final date element.

Recurring anniversaries often omit the year because month and day identify a point in every calendar cycle. Március 15-én can refer to the next occurrence or to the national holiday generally. If the event is habitual, minden évben “every year” removes any ambiguity.

Szeptember 13-án nyílik meg az új rendelő.

The new clinic opens on 13 September.

A vonat január 8-án, reggel fél hétkor indul.

The train leaves on 8 January at 6:30 in the morning.

Minden évben március 15-én kitűzzük a zászlót.

Every year on 15 March, we put out the flag.

The date phrase normally proceeds from broad frame to narrow frame: 2026. szeptember 13-án reggel fél hétkor. This follows the same larger-to-smaller logic as year–month–day. Hungarian word order can move a focused time expression near the verb, but the elements inside a complete date retain their conventional order.

💡
Ask what the date phrase is doing. A label answers “which date?” and ends in 13.; a time adjunct answers “on which date?” and ends in 13-án.

Beginnings, endpoints, and ranges

Deadlines and periods require more than a simple “on.” Use -tól/-től for a starting day and -ig for an endpoint. A range can also be written with an en dash: szeptember 13–15. (formal/compact). When the range as a whole receives a suffix, the suffix attaches to the final number: december 5–6-án “on 5–6 December.”

A jelentkezés szeptember 1-jétől október 15-ig tart.

Applications are open from 1 September until 15 October.

A műhelyt december 5–6-án tartjuk.

We are holding the workshop on 5–6 December.

Kérlek, május 20-ig küldd el a végleges változatot.

Please send the final version by 20 May.

In deadline contexts -ig is inclusive unless the surrounding rules specify otherwise: május 20-ig normally includes 20 May. Legal or administrative documents (formal) often add a clock time to eliminate practical ambiguity: május 20-án 16 óráig “until 4 p.m. on 20 May.”

Years as points, periods, and narrative frames

For an event located in a year, use -ban/-ben: 1998-ban. With a starting or ending boundary, use 2020-tól, 2030-ig. A span of years may be written 2025–2027 között or described with időszak “period.” The year is a singular time unit after a number: két év, harminc év, never két évek.

A nagyszüleim 1974-ben ismerkedtek meg.

My grandparents met in 1974.

A könyvtár 2027-től vasárnap is nyitva lesz.

From 2027, the library will also be open on Sundays.

Az épület felújítása 2025 és 2027 között zajlik.

The renovation of the building is taking place between 2025 and 2027.

Historical narration frequently uses a year or century as an initial scene-setting topic: 1848-ban forradalom tört ki “In 1848, a revolution broke out.” Once the period is established, Hungarian can omit repeated year phrases just as English can. In academic prose (academic), az 1848. évi törvények “the laws of 1848” is a concise attributive pattern; everyday conversation prefers a relative or participial description when that is clearer.

Az 1848. évi törvények alapvetően átalakították az ország politikai rendszerét.

The laws of 1848 fundamentally transformed the country's political system.

Talking about age and life stages

The basic question is Hány éves vagy? (informal) or Hány éves Ön? (formal). The answer uses éves: harmincéves vagyok. A simple written-out number joins éves: egy harmincéves férfi, Harmincéves vagyok. A structurally complex numeral is separate: egy huszonkilenc éves férfi, Huszonkilenc éves vagyok. Digits are separate too: 30 éves.

A pályázatra minden tizennyolc évesnél idősebb jelentkező nevezhet.

Any applicant older than eighteen may enter the competition.

A húgom jövő héten tölti be a harmincat.

My younger sister turns thirty next week.

The expression betölti a harmincat “turns thirty” presents the birthday as reaching a threshold. Harmincéves describes the resulting age. To locate an event at a life stage, use harmincévesen or harmincéves korában. The latter makes the life-stage frame explicit and is useful when the subject is third person.

Kodály Zoltán huszonkét éves korában kezdte gyűjteni a magyar népdalokat.

Zoltán Kodály began collecting Hungarian folk songs at the age of twenty-two.

Age limits in notices often use éven aluli “under ... years of age” and éven felüli “over ... years of age” (formal/administrative): 14 éven aluli gyermek. Everyday speech more often says tizennégy évnél fiatalabb gyerek “a child younger than fourteen.” These constructions measure a boundary; they do not use éves in exactly the same way as a simple age statement.

💡
English “I am thirty” has no overt unit. Hungarian normally makes the age relation explicit with éves: Harmincéves vagyok. Use betöltöm a harmincat when the point is reaching the birthday.

Centuries, decades, and cultural periods

A century is a numbered interval, so Hungarian uses an ordinal: a 20. század. Add a case suffix to század, not to the number: a 20. században. To modify a noun, use századi: 20. századi építészet. Roman numerals remain recognizable (formal/traditional), but Arabic numerals are increasingly usual in general prose.

A 20. században Budapest arculata többször is jelentősen megváltozott.

In the twentieth century, the appearance of Budapest changed substantially several times.

A múzeum 19. századi fényképeket digitalizál.

The museum is digitizing nineteenth-century photographs.

Decades can be precise calendar sets or looser cultural labels. Az 1990-es években is precise and neutral. A kilencvenes években is equally standard and often more natural in narration. With recent decades, context determines the century: a húszas évek can mean the 1920s or the 2020s, so formal or potentially ambiguous writing should keep the full digits.

A kilencvenes években még ritkaságnak számított az otthoni internet.

In the 1990s, home internet was still considered a rarity.

A short dialogue

Mikor lesz a következő kontroll? — Október 3-án, csütörtökön, délelőtt tízkor.

When is the next check-up? — On Thursday, 3 October, at ten in the morning.

Az nekem nem jó. Áttehetjük október 10-re? — Igen, akkor is van szabad időpont.

That doesn't work for me. Can we move it to 10 October? — Yes, there is an available appointment then too.

Here -án locates the original appointment, while -ra/-re marks the new target date after rescheduling. This contrast is semantic, not merely stylistic: október 10-én means “on 10 October,” whereas október 10-re means “for/by 10 October” as a target.

Formal and informal presentation

Administrative texts often compress dates into numeric forms and use explicit ranges (formal). Conversation normally spells out the month and relies on shared context (informal).

A dokumentum benyújtási határideje: 2026. 09. 30. 16:00.

Deadline for submitting the document: 30 September 2026, 4:00 p.m.

Szeptember végéig küldd át, jó?

Send it over by the end of September, okay?

Both are natural, but the first fixes an exact instant, while the second negotiates a practical period. Szeptember végéig is not a less correct version of a numeric deadline; it makes a deliberately less exact commitment.

Key Takeaways

  • Use a bare ordinal date as a label, but -án/-én to locate an event on that day.
  • Date boundaries use -tól/-től and -ig; -ra/-re can mark a target date.
  • Locate an event in a year with -ban/-ben, and keep directly quantified év singular.
  • Use éves for age, betölti a harmincat for reaching an age, and évesen for “at age ...”.
  • Formal numeric dates maximize precision; spoken month names and broader phrases are more natural in ordinary conversation.
