Dates, Years, Ages, and Centuries: Contrasts and Learner Traps

The hardest calendar errors are rarely failures to remember a month name. They arise when several grammatically valid expressions describe different relations: május 10. labels a date, május 10-én locates an event, május 10-re sets a target, and május 10-ig sets an endpoint. This page makes those boundaries explicit. See the full paradigms on the dates forms page and broader contexts on the dates usage page.

Bare date, location, target, or endpoint?

Compare these four matched forms:

FormQuestion answeredCore meaning
május 10.Hányadika?date as a label
május 10-énMikor?event located on that date
május 10-reMikorra?date as a goal or intended readiness point
május 10-igMeddig?date as an endpoint or deadline

A vizsga időpontja május 10.

The exam date is 10 May.

A vizsgát május 10-én tartják.

The exam will be held on 10 May.

Május 10-re már minden tételt át akarok ismételni.

I want to have reviewed every topic by 10 May.

Május 10-ig lehet jelentkezni a vizsgára.

You can register for the exam until 10 May.

The difference between -re and -ig deserves special attention. Péntekre elkészül presents Friday as the target state: it will be ready for/by Friday. Péntekig elkészül presents Friday as the outer time boundary. In many promises both translate as “by Friday,” but only -re highlights the resulting readiness at the target point.

Péntekre elkészítem a fordítást.

I'll have the translation ready for Friday.

Péntekig dolgozom a fordításon.

I'll work on the translation until Friday.

Use the Hungarian question as a diagnostic: hányadika? → bare ordinal; mikor?-án/-én; mikorra?-ra/-re; meddig?-ig.

Calendar year versus elapsed years

2020-ban is a calendar location: “in 2020.” Öt éve relates an event or continuing state to the present. With a completed event, it means “five years ago”; with a state that still holds, the English translation is often “for five years.” The predicate and context resolve the interpretation.

2020-ban kezdtem magyarul tanulni.

I started learning Hungarian in 2020.

Öt éve kezdtem magyarul tanulni.

I started learning Hungarian five years ago.

Öt éve tanulok magyarul.

I have been learning Hungarian for five years.

By contrast, öt évig tanultam magyarul presents a bounded duration, normally one that has ended or is viewed as a complete span. Öt éven át also means “for five years,” but emphasizes continuity throughout the interval and can sound more deliberate or written (neutral/formal).

Öt évig tanultam magyarul, aztán Bécsbe költöztem.

I studied Hungarian for five years, then moved to Vienna.

Öt éven át minden nyáron visszatértünk ugyanabba a faluba.

For five years, we returned to the same village every summer.

All these quantified forms keep év singular: öt év, öt éve, öt évig, öt éven át. The final suffix or postpositional construction marks the relation that English expresses with “ago,” “for,” or “throughout.”

Being an age versus lasting that many years

Harmincéves describes age. Harminc év measures a period. Harminc éve places a starting point relative to now. English permits “thirty years” in all these environments, but Hungarian requires the structural distinction.

A híd harmincéves.

The bridge is thirty years old.

A híd építése három évig tartott.

Construction of the bridge lasted three years.

A hidat harminc éve adták át.

The bridge was opened thirty years ago.

With people, harmincéves lett means “turned/became thirty,” whereas betöltötte a harmincat explicitly presents the birthday threshold. Harmincévesen locates another event at that age. Do not replace all three with one mechanically translated construction.

Harmincéves lettem, de idén nem rendeztem nagy bulit.

I turned thirty, but I didn't have a big party this year.

Harmincévesen váltottam pályát.

I changed careers at thirty.

💡
In age expressions, éves is adjectival: it describes a person or thing. Bare év is the noun “year” and measures a duration. That category difference explains more than an English gloss does.

Century number, calendar year, or decade label?

Centuries are ordinal because the expression identifies which hundred-year interval is meant: a 19. század “the nineteenth century.” Years themselves are cardinal labels: 1848-ban, not an ordinal equivalent of “the 1848th.” Decades use a derived adjective plus plural évek: az 1990-es évek.

Az esemény 1848-ban, a 19. század közepén történt.

The event happened in 1848, in the middle of the nineteenth century.

Az 1990-es évek elején sok állami vállalatot privatizáltak.

In the early 1990s, many state-owned companies were privatized.

The shorter a kilencvenes évek is natural in speech and narrative prose (neutral/informal), but its century may be ambiguous. Az 1990-es évek is safer in academic, historical, or technical writing (formal/academic). A századforduló “the turn of the century” is even more context-dependent: a text about 1900 and a text about 2000 identify different boundaries.

Information structure and date placement

Hungarian often puts a time phrase first to establish a frame: 2026-ban új rendszer indul. When the date is the corrective focus, it tends to stand immediately before the finite verb and receives strong stress: Nem kedden, hanem szerdán érkezik “It is not Tuesday but Wednesday that he/she arrives.” The suffix remains determined by the semantic role, not by word position.

Nem június 5-én, hanem június 6-án kezdődik a konferencia.

The conference starts not on 5 June, but on 6 June.

A konferencia JÚNIUS 6-ÁN kezdődik, nem június 5-én.

The conference starts on 6 JUNE, not on 5 June.

Capitalization here represents contrastive stress for teaching purposes, not normal Hungarian spelling. In ordinary prose, write both dates normally. The change in placement and intonation highlights corrected information, but neither creates a new calendar case.

Roman numerals, Arabic numerals, and register

2026. IX. 13. and 2026. 09. 13. are both standard compact dates. Roman-numeral months remain common on documents and commemorative material (formal/traditional), but they are not more grammatically correct. 2026. szeptember 13. is clearest in running prose. The ISO-style 2026-09-13 is useful for machine sorting (technical); copying it into all prose can look bureaucratic.

Century notation works similarly: a XXI. század is traditional (formal), while a 21. század is neutral and increasingly common. Crucially, the year in a date stays Arabic: a Roman numeral in the first slot is not standard modern date notation.

Decision tree

  1. Are you naming the date itself? Use
    1. szeptember 13.
  2. Are you locating an event on that day? Use
    1. szeptember 13-án
    .
  3. Is the date a goal or rescheduled destination? Use szeptember 13-ra.
  4. Is it the last permitted day? Use szeptember 13-ig.
  5. Are you locating something in a calendar year? Use 2026-ban.
  6. Are you describing age? Use éves; are you measuring duration? Use singular év with the needed suffix.
  7. Are you naming a century? Use an ordinal: a 21. század.

Diagnostic exercise

Choose the expression that fits, then compare the explanation.

  1. “The report will be ready for 3 October.” → október 3-ra. The date is a target state, so -ra is natural.
  2. “The office is closed until 3 October.” → október 3-ig. The date is an endpoint, so use -ig.
  3. “I have lived here for six years.” → Hat éve itt lakom. The state began six years ago and continues.
  4. “I lived there for six years.” → Hat évig laktam ott. The completed verb presents a bounded past duration.
  5. “a seventeenth-century map” → egy 17. századi térkép. The century number is ordinal and századi modifies the noun.

Common Mistakes

❌ Október 3.-án találkozunk.

Incorrect — a date suffix replaces the ordinal point.

✅ Október 3-án találkozunk.

We are meeting on 3 October.

❌ Hat évekig dolgoztam ott.

Incorrect — a noun directly quantified by a numeral stays singular.

✅ Hat évig dolgoztam ott.

I worked there for six years.

❌ A nagymamám hetven év van.

Incorrect — age is expressed with the adjective éves.

✅ A nagymamám hetvenéves.

My grandmother is seventy years old.

❌ A múzeum 5. júniusban nyílik.

Incorrect — the date order and day marking copy English structure.

✅ A múzeum június 5-én nyílik.

The museum opens on 5 June.

Key Takeaways

  • A point, target, and endpoint require different forms: -án/-én, -ra/-re, and -ig.
  • Öt éve relates a situation to now; öt évig presents a bounded duration.
  • Éves describes age, while singular év measures time.
  • Years are cardinal labels, centuries are ordinal intervals, and decade names use -es évek.
  • Information structure can emphasize a date, but it does not change the suffix required by that date's semantic role.
