The constructions on this page all package a message, but they do so at different levels. Addig üsd a vasat, amíg meleg packages a whole piece of advice as a proverb. Néha-néha and jobbnál jobb package aspectual or evaluative meaning inside an expression. Döntést hoz and intézkedést tesz package an event as a noun plus a support verb. Choosing well requires attention to scope, lexical convention, information structure, and register.
Proverb versus direct statement
Use Addig üsd a vasat, amíg meleg when the recognizable proverbial image contributes something: shared wisdom, encouragement, humor, or a deliberately familiar tone. Use a direct imperative when only the instruction matters.
Most lelkesek az önkéntesek; addig üsd a vasat, amíg meleg, és szervezd meg a következő találkozót!
The volunteers are enthusiastic now; strike while the iron is hot and organize the next meeting!
Használd ki a mostani érdeklődést, és még ma hirdesd meg a következő találkozót!
Take advantage of the current interest and advertise the next meeting today!
The first is neutral but rhetorically marked as a proverb. The second is stylistically unmarked and more precise. In official instructions (formal), direct wording is normally preferable because a proverb can sound vague or promotional.
Do not confuse the fixed proverb with a literal addig ... amíg ... construction:
Addig keverd a mártást, amíg teljesen sima nem lesz.
Stir the sauce until it is completely smooth.
This is ordinary compositional grammar, not a proverb. It shares the temporal correlative frame but does not invoke a culturally fixed message.
Néha, néha-néha, and időnként
Plain néha neutrally marks occasional frequency. Néha-néha makes the occurrences feel scattered or intermittent and is slightly more expressive. Időnként also means “from time to time” and fits both speech and careful prose; alkalmanként can mean “occasionally” or “per occasion” and is especially useful in formal contexts.
Néha busszal megyek munkába.
Sometimes I go to work by bus.
Néha-néha busszal megyek, ha nincs kedvem vezetni.
Every now and then I take the bus when I don't feel like driving.
The factual difference may be small, but the doubled form presents the occasions more vividly. Compare a formal monitoring statement:
A mérőeszközt időnként újra kell kalibrálni.
The measuring instrument must be recalibrated from time to time.
In an academic method section, expressive néha-néha would be less precise. Conversely, in a personal reminiscence it can contribute rhythm and an episodic feel.
The lexical boundary matters: exact reduplication does not have one universal effect. Lassan-lassan means gradual development, not “occasionally slowly,” and már-már means “almost/on the verge of,” not simply “sometimes already.” Learn each established pair as a unit.
Jobbnál jobb, nagyon jó, and egyre jobb
Use jobbnál jobb for a set whose members are all strikingly good. Use nagyon jó to intensify one item or make a plain assessment. Use egyre jobb for improvement over time or along an ordered progression.
A döntőben jobbnál jobb előadásokat hallottunk.
In the final, we heard one outstanding performance after another.
A záró előadás nagyon jó volt.
The closing performance was very good.
A zenekar minden próbával egyre jobb lett.
The band got better with every rehearsal.
The first compares members across a plural set; the second evaluates one event; the third describes a changing scale. English “better and better” often means egyre jobb, not jobbnál jobb. A word-for-word choice therefore reverses the intended structure.
The echo pattern also inherits the evaluation of its adjective:
A vizsgálat során súlyosabbnál súlyosabb hiányosságokra derült fény.
During the investigation, one increasingly serious deficiency after another came to light.
This is expressive formal/journalistic wording (formal/journalistic), not praise. The construction contributes a remarkable series; súlyos supplies the negative assessment.
Dönt, döntést hoz, and meghozza a döntést
Simple dönt foregrounds the act of deciding and is natural across registers. Döntést hoz nominalizes the event, making it easier to classify or modify. Meghozza a döntést presents a particular definite decision as completed or reached.
A csapat holnap dönt az új időpontról.
The team will decide on the new date tomorrow.
A csapat holnap előzetes döntést hoz az új időpontról.
The team will make a preliminary decision on the new date tomorrow.
A csapat végül meghozta a mindenki által várt döntést.
The team finally made the decision everyone had been waiting for.
These are not merely long and short synonyms. The middle sentence needs the noun because előzetes classifies the decision. The last has a definite object and completed reading, so meg- and definite hozta belong to the package.
Information structure can separate the prefix from the verb. With preverbal focus or negation, meg follows the finite verb:
A döntést nem kedden hozzák meg, hanem csütörtökön.
They will make the decision not on Tuesday but on Thursday.
The collocation remains meghozza a döntést at the lexical level even though syntax produces hozzák meg here. English speakers who memorize only adjacent words may incorrectly keep the prefix attached in every sentence. See the verb-prefix order contrasts for the general rule.
Intézkedik, intézkedést tesz, and intézkedést hoz
Intézkedik is the direct verb “take action/make arrangements.” Intézkedést tesz makes the measure itself an object that can be counted, modified, and classified. The latter is characteristic of administrative and journalistic language (formal).
A gondnok rögtön intézkedett a beázás miatt.
The caretaker took action immediately because of the leak.
Az üzemeltető három sürgős intézkedést tett a további károk megelőzésére.
The operator took three urgent measures to prevent further damage.
The numeral and adjective make the noun-based construction useful. In casual speech, unnecessarily heavy support-verb phrases can sound bureaucratic: Majd intézkedem “I'll take care of it” is usually better than announcing that one will “take the necessary measure.”
Formal Hungarian also uses intézkedést hoz, especially for a measure enacted by an authority. The boundary with intézkedést tesz is not categorical: plural intézkedéseket tesz readily presents several practical steps, while intézkedést hoz often presents the measure as an institutional act.
A jegybank átmeneti intézkedést hozott a pénzügyi stabilitás védelmében.
The central bank introduced a temporary measure to protect financial stability.
Support verbs are lexically selective even though this particular noun permits both verbs. Hungarian says döntést hoz, never döntést tesz for “make a decision,” and it also says határozatot hoz “adopt/issue a resolution.” The shared English verbs take and make do not predict the Hungarian partner.
A közgyűlés határozatot hozott az épület felújításáról.
The general meeting adopted a resolution on renovating the building.
Register and information structure
Proverbs and comparative echoes are expressive. They may enliven conversation or journalism but can weaken the precision of legal and academic writing. Support-verb constructions show the reverse tendency: they are frequent in formal institutional prose but can burden a casual exchange. Reduplicated frequency forms occupy the middle; néha-néha is fully standard, though more evocative than a frequency statistic.
Word order continues to serve Hungarian focus. Compare:
A bizottság pénteken hoz döntést.
The committee will make a decision on Friday.
A bizottság pénteken hozza meg a döntést, nem csütörtökön.
The committee will make the decision on Friday, not Thursday.
The second sentence has a definite decision and contrastive temporal focus. The preverbal position and spoken stress identify pénteken as the correction; ordinary Hungarian spelling needs no special capitalization.
Decision tree
- Do you want recognizable shared wisdom about acting promptly? Use Addig üsd a vasat, amíg meleg.
- Do you only need a precise instruction? State it directly.
- Is the frequency neutral? Use néha or időnként; is it scattered and expressive? Consider néha-néha.
- Are multiple items each exceptional? Use jobbnál jobb or the corresponding echoed comparative.
- Is one entity improving? Use egyre jobb.
- Is the event of deciding enough? Use dönt; does the decision need modifiers or institutional packaging? Use döntést hoz.
- Is direct action central? Use intézkedik. Are practical steps counted or classified? Intézkedéseket tesz is natural. Is an authority enacting a measure? Formal intézkedést hoz is also established.
Diagnostic
Choose the best option.
- A single draft improves after every revision: jobbnál jobb / egyre jobb.
- A gallery displays many outstanding photographs: nagyon jó / jobbnál jobb.
- A friend should contact an enthusiastic buyer now: proverb or direct administrative wording?
- A regulator lists four separate emergency measures: intézkedik / intézkedéseket tesz.
- A board simply announces when it will decide: dönt / előzetes döntést hoz.
Answers: 1 egyre jobb, because one item changes over time; 2 jobbnál jobb, because a set is evaluated; 3 the proverb is natural if friendly encouragement is intended, while direct wording is clearer if tone is irrelevant; 4 intézkedéseket tesz, because the measures are counted and classified; 5 dönt, because no nominal modifier requires institutional packaging.
Common Mistakes
Do not translate English “better and better” mechanically when one thing is improving.
❌ A terv minden változattal jobbnál jobb lesz.
Incorrect for one developing plan: the echo construction profiles members of a set, not gradual change.
✅ A terv minden változattal egyre jobb lesz.
The plan gets better with every revision.
Do not improvise the support verb from English make.
❌ A vezetőség fontos döntést készített.
Incorrect for 'made an important decision': 'készít' means prepare or manufacture, not reach a decision.
✅ A vezetőség fontos döntést hozott.
The management made an important decision.
Do not force the formal noun construction into a direct conversational promise.
❌ Nyugi, mindjárt intézkedést csinálok!
Incorrect: 'csinál' is not the support verb selected by 'intézkedés.'
✅ Nyugi, mindjárt intézkedem!
Don't worry, I'll take care of it right away!
Keep the definite object agreement inside the proverb.
❌ Addig üssetek a vasat, amíg meleg.
Incorrect: the plural imperative is indefinite despite the definite object 'a vasat.'
✅ Addig üssétek a vasat, amíg meleg.
Keep striking while the iron is hot.
Key Takeaways
- A proverb and a direct instruction may convey similar content but differ in rhetorical force.
- Néha-néha is distributed and expressive; plain néha, időnként, and alkalmanként suit different settings.
- Jobbnál jobb compares outstanding members of a set; egyre jobb marks development.
- Simple dönt/intézkedik foreground action; noun + support verb makes the institutional event available for modification, and intézkedés permits both tesz and formal hoz in overlapping contexts.
- Fixed expressions retain normal case, definiteness, prefix order, and vowel harmony, so store the whole grammatical frame rather than an English gloss.
