Hungarian has a definite article a/az, an indefinite article egy, and many grammatical noun phrases with no article at all. The articles do not show gender, number, case, or vowel harmony. Their choice instead expresses whether a referent is identifiable or newly introduced—and, when the noun phrase is a direct object, that definiteness reaches into the verb conjugation. English speakers must therefore learn the article and the verb form as parts of one clause pattern. After mastering this architecture, continue with article meanings in discourse and the article decision guide.
The definite article a/az
Use a before a consonant sound and az before a vowel sound. The choice is phonological, not vowel harmony and not grammatical gender.
| Following sound | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| consonant | a | a ház — the house |
| vowel | az | az autó — the car |
| adjective beginning with consonant | a | a régi autó — the old car |
| adjective beginning with vowel | az | az új ház — the new house |
The immediately following sound decides. Autó begins with a vowel, but a régi autó uses a because régi comes directly after the article. Ház begins with a consonant, but az új ház uses az because új begins with a vowel.
A ház előtt áll egy bicikli.
A bicycle is standing in front of the house.
Az autó kulcsa az asztalon van.
The car key is on the table.
A régi épületet tavaly felújították.
The old building was renovated last year.
The article remains separate and unchanged when the noun becomes plural, possessed, or case-marked: a házak, a házban, az autók, az autómmal. The noun carries those endings.
The indefinite article egy
Egy is both the indefinite article “a/an” and the numeral “one.” It has one form before all sounds: egy ház, egy autó, egy új ötlet. As an article it is usually unstressed and introduces one nonspecific or not-yet-established member of a class. As a numeral it is stressed or contrasted and means exactly one.
Vettem egy könyvet a pályaudvaron.
I bought a book at the station.
Csak EGY könyvet vettem, nem hármat.
I bought only one book, not three.
Egy érdekes üzenet érkezett reggel.
An interesting message arrived this morning.
Egy itself does not take the noun's case when it is an article: egy könyvben “in a book,” egy autóval “with a car.” The noun bears case. When egy stands independently, it can be inflected: egyben “in one/in a single unit,” but that is a different structure.
Hungarian uses egy less automatically than English uses a/an. Profession predicates and many activity-like bare objects omit it. The absence of egy is meaningful grammar, not a missing word.
Zero article
“Zero article” means that no article is pronounced or written. Marking it as ∅ in analysis is useful, but the symbol never appears in Hungarian text.
| Pattern | Hungarian | Typical function |
|---|---|---|
| ∅ + profession predicate | Anna orvos. | classification |
| ∅ + bare object | Könyvet olvasok. | nonspecific activity |
| ∅ + bare plural subject | Gyerekek játszanak. | introducing indefinite participants |
| ∅ + proper name | Péter megérkezett. | person already identified by name |
| ∅ + institutional expression | Iskolába jár. | attends school |
A nővérem mérnök.
My older sister is an engineer.
Kávét kérek, cukor nélkül.
I would like coffee, without sugar.
Gyerekek játszanak az udvaron.
Children are playing in the yard.
Péter holnap Szegedre utazik.
Péter is traveling to Szeged tomorrow.
The profession predicate mérnök is bare, even though English requires an. A bare object such as kávét presents a type or activity rather than one newly individuated cup. A proper name identifies its referent without an article in neutral standard usage.
Identifiable reference and discourse introduction
Definite a/az marks a referent the listener can identify from the situation, prior discourse, shared knowledge, or a unique description. Indefinite egy commonly introduces a new singular referent. Once introduced, it can be referred to with the definite article.
Láttam egy kutyát a kapu előtt. A kutya nagyon fázott.
I saw a dog in front of the gate. The dog was very cold.
The first noun phrase establishes a dog; the second points back to that same identifiable animal. Hungarian and English align here, but Hungarian article use differs substantially in generic statements, professions, names, and bare activities.
Generic reference
Hungarian often uses a definite singular or plural for a whole species, class, or substance where English uses a bare plural or mass noun.
A kutya társas állat.
Dogs are social animals.
A denevérek éjszaka indulnak vadászni.
Bats go hunting at night.
A víz nélkülözhetetlen az élethez.
Water is essential for life.
English “dogs,” “bees,” and “water” have zero article in these generic readings. Hungarian definite a/az presents the class or substance as an identifiable kind. Bare plurals more readily introduce indefinite participants in an event: Kutyák ugatnak odakint “Dogs are barking outside.”
Definiteness and the verb paradigm
With a third-person direct object, Hungarian normally chooses an indefinite or definite verb conjugation according to the object. An indefinite article or a bare nonspecific object selects the indefinite conjugation; a definite article selects the definite conjugation.
| Object | Object type | Verb | Sentence |
|---|---|---|---|
| egy könyvet | indefinite | olvasok | Olvasok egy könyvet. |
| könyvet | bare/nonspecific | olvasok | Könyvet olvasok. |
| a könyvet | definite | olvasom | Olvasom a könyvet. |
| ezt a könyvet | demonstrative definite | olvasom | Ezt a könyvet olvasom. |
| Pétert | proper-name definite | látom | Látom Pétert. |
| a könyvemet | possessed definite | keresem | Keresem a könyvemet. |
Keresek egy csendes kávézót.
I am looking for a quiet café.
Keresem a kávézót, ahol tegnap találkoztunk.
I am looking for the café where we met yesterday.
The contrast keresek / keresem is not subject agreement: both subjects are first-person singular. It reflects whether the object is unidentified or identifiable. Definite objects without a/az, such as proper names and many possessed or demonstrative expressions, also trigger the definite conjugation.
The subject's article does not select the paradigm. In A fiú olvas egy könyvet, definite a fiú is the subject, but indefinite egy könyvet is the object, so the verb is olvas in the indefinite paradigm. Definiteness agreement reaches from the direct object to the verb.
Principal article exceptions to recognize
Personal names and most city/country names normally occur without articles in neutral standard Hungarian: Anna, Budapest, Magyarország. Some geographical names conventionally include one: a Duna, a Balaton, az Egyesült Államok. In (informal/regional) usage, especially in parts of western Hungary and Budapest speech, personal names may appear with an article (a Péter); formal edited prose generally omits it.
Possessed common nouns usually take a definite article: a könyvem “my book,” az autónk “our car.” A proper-name possessor can stand without an initial article: Péter könyve. Institutional and conventional expressions may be bare: iskolába jár “attends school,” contrasting with a specifically identifiable building in az iskolába megy “goes to the school.”
Segmentation exercise
Identify article status, noun marking, and object-triggered verb form.
- a házban = definite article + ház-ban; case is on the noun.
- egy könyvet olvasok = indefinite article + accusative object + indefinite verb.
- a könyvet olvasom = definite article + accusative object + definite verb.
- könyvet olvasok = zero article + nonspecific accusative object + indefinite verb.
- ezt a könyvet olvasom = agreeing demonstrative phrase + definite verb.
- Pétert látom = articleless proper-name object + definite verb.
Common Mistakes
❌ A új orvos már megérkezett.
Incorrect — a vowel sound immediately after the article requires az.
✅ Az új orvos már megérkezett.
The new doctor has already arrived.
❌ A bátyám van tanár.
Incorrect — Hungarian omits the present-tense copula in a neutral profession statement.
✅ A bátyám tanár.
My older brother is a teacher.
❌ Olvasok a könyvet.
Incorrect — a definite direct object requires the definite verb paradigm.
✅ Olvasom a könyvet.
I am reading the book.
❌ Olvasom egy könyvet.
Incorrect — an indefinite object requires the indefinite verb paradigm.
✅ Olvasok egy könyvet.
I am reading a book.
❌ Ez könyvet keresem.
Incorrect — demonstrative agreement and definite article are missing.
✅ Ezt a könyvet keresem.
I am looking for this book.
Key Takeaways
- A precedes a consonant sound; az precedes a vowel sound. Neither form inflects.
- Egy is an unstressed indefinite article or a stressed numeral meaning exactly one.
- Zero article is normal with profession predicates, names, bare activities, and certain institutional expressions.
- Generic species and substances often take definite a/az where English uses no article.
- Direct-object definiteness selects the verb paradigm: olvasok egy könyvet but olvasom a könyvet.
- Proper names, demonstratives, and possessed objects can trigger definite conjugation without a simple visible a/az + noun pattern.
