Hungarian has two forms of the definite article: a and az. Both mean “the.” The choice does not express gender, number, or vowel harmony; it makes the boundary between the article and the next expression easier to pronounce. Use a before a consonant sound and az before a vowel sound.
This page concentrates on the form of the article. The usage page explains when Hungarian requires a definite article, while the contrast page handles difficult choices involving abbreviations, quoted material, and zero article.
The core sound rule
The relevant question is not “Which letter do I see?” but “Which sound do I say first?” With an ordinary Hungarian word, spelling makes the answer transparent: a ház, because ház begins with the consonant /h/; az alma, because alma begins with the vowel /a/.
| Next spoken onset | Article | Pattern | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| consonant | a | a + noun phrase | a piros kabát |
| vowel | az | az + noun phrase | az új kabát |
A busz már a megállóban vár.
The bus is already waiting at the stop.
Az utolsó busz tíz perc múlva indul.
The last bus leaves in ten minutes.
The article responds to the first sound of the whole expression immediately following it. If an adjective comes before the noun, the adjective controls the choice: a drága étterem, but az olcsó étterem. The noun itself may begin with a different kind of sound.
A régi épületet jövőre felújítják.
The old building will be renovated next year.
Az üres dobozt tedd a polcra!
Put the empty box on the shelf!
All Hungarian vowels select az
Every Hungarian vowel counts as a vowel onset, whether it is short or long, rounded or unrounded. Therefore az appears before words beginning with a, á, e, é, i, í, o, ó, ö, ő, u, ú, ü, ű. Vowel harmony is not involved: back-vowel ablak, front-vowel ember, rounded-front őr, and long út all take the same form az.
Az őr becsukta az ajtót.
The guard closed the door.
Az űrlapot online is ki lehet tölteni.
The form can also be completed online.
Hungarian consonant letters and multigraphs—including gy, ny, sz, zs, dzs—select a because each represents a consonant onset: a gyerek, a nyitott ablak, a szomszéd, a zsúfolt villamos, a dzsesszklub. Consonant length later in the word does not affect the choice: a meggy, a szálloda.
A gyerekek a szomszéd kertjében játszanak.
The children are playing in the neighbor's garden.
Numbers: pronounce the number first
When a number is written in digits, choose the article from the way the number is read aloud. 5 is öt, so “the number 5” is az 5-ös. 6 is hat, so “the number 6” is a 6-os. The visible digit itself has no consonant or vowel sound.
| Written form | Spoken beginning | Correct phrase |
|---|---|---|
| 1-es | egy… | az 1-es |
| 5-ös | öt… | az 5-ös |
| 6-os | hat… | a 6-os |
| 20-as | húsz… | a 20-as |
| 1000-es | ezer… | az 1000-es |
Az 5-ös busz most nem jár a belváros felé.
The number 5 bus is not running toward the city center at the moment.
A 20-as asztalt már lefoglalták.
Table 20 has already been reserved.
Longer numerals follow the same principle. 2026 begins kétezer…, so it takes a; 1848 normally begins ezer…, so it takes az. The exact conventional reading matters, not the typography.
Abbreviations and initialisms
An abbreviation also selects the article by its actual pronunciation in the sentence. If speakers name the letters, use the first sound of the first letter name. Hungarian M is em, so az MTA; B is bé, so a BKK. If an abbreviation is read as a word, use that word's onset: a NATO begins with /n/.
Az MTA új kutatási programot indított.
The Hungarian Academy of Sciences launched a new research program. (formal)
A BKK módosította az esti menetrendet.
The Budapest transport authority changed the evening timetable. (neutral)
Az SMS csak néhány perccel később érkezett meg.
The text message arrived only a few minutes later.
Foreign abbreviations can vary if speakers genuinely use different pronunciations. Once you choose a pronunciation, however, the article follows it consistently. Writing a merely because an abbreviation begins with a consonant letter is not a Hungarian rule.
Quoted words, letters, and titles
A quoted item is still pronounced. Choose the article from the first sound inside the quotation marks: a „ház” szó, but az „és” kötőszó. The same applies to a title: a „Tüskevár”, az „Egri csillagok”. Quotation marks do not interrupt the sound rule.
Az „és” elé itt nem kell vessző.
No comma is needed before ‘and’ here.
A „Tüskevár” volt az első magyar regény, amelyet végigolvastam.
Tüskevár was the first Hungarian novel I read all the way through.
Individual letter names behave in the same way. Since f is pronounced ef, one says az f betű; since k is ká, one says a k betű.
Connected pronunciation
In careful and everyday standard speech, az keeps its z before a vowel: az alma, az ember, az út. The final consonant links smoothly to the following vowel, but it is not omitted in standard spelling. Before a consonant, the standard form is a, not a rapidly pronounced az: a bolt.
This alternation is unlike English a/an in meaning. English a/an is indefinite; Hungarian a/az is definite. Hungarian egy is the usual indefinite article.
Kérek egy almát. Az almát majd otthon megeszem.
I'd like an apple. I'll eat the apple at home.
The first noun phrase introduces one nonspecific apple; the second is definite. This matters beyond the noun phrase. A definite object normally triggers the definite verbal paradigm: kérem az almát “I would like the apple,” but kérek egy almát “I would like an apple.” Definite marking therefore reaches from the article into verb conjugation.
Segmentation practice
Segment each bold phrase into article plus following expression, then state which first sound selects the article.
- az új lakás = az + új lakás; új begins with a vowel.
- a nyolcadik emelet = a + nyolcadik emelet; ny is a consonant multigraph.
- az 1-es villamos = az + 1-es villamos; 1-es begins with spoken egy.
- az EU-s szabály = az + EU-s szabály; the abbreviation begins with pronounced e.
- a „van” ige = a + „van” ige; the quoted word begins with /v/.
Suffixes on later words do not affect the selection. In az új lakásban, -ban follows the harmony of lakás, but az was chosen solely because új begins with a vowel.
Common Mistakes
❌ A alma friss.
Incorrect — alma begins with a vowel sound, so the definite article must be az.
✅ Az alma friss.
The apple is fresh.
❌ Az gyerek már alszik.
Incorrect — gy is one consonant sound, so use a.
✅ A gyerek már alszik.
The child is already asleep.
❌ A 5-ös busz késik.
Incorrect — 5-ös begins with spoken öt, a vowel sound.
✅ Az 5-ös busz késik.
The number 5 bus is late.
❌ Olvasok az újságot.
Incorrect in neutral standard Hungarian — the definite object az újságot requires definite first-person singular olvasom.
✅ Olvasom az újságot.
I'm reading the newspaper.
Key Takeaways
- A and az are two sound-conditioned forms of the definite article “the.”
- Use a before a consonant sound and az before a vowel sound.
- Numbers, abbreviations, letter names, and quoted forms follow pronunciation, not visual spelling.
- The first pronounced word in the noun phrase controls the choice.
- A/az is not English a/an: Hungarian egy is indefinite.
- A direct object introduced by a/az is definite and normally selects definite verb conjugation.
