Universal, Indefinite, and Negative Determiners: Forms and Core Pattern

Hungarian quantity determiners normally combine with a morphologically singular noun: minden könyv “every book,” néhány kérdés “a few questions,” az összes jegy “all the tickets.” Their article patterns and definiteness are not identical. That matters twice when the phrase is an object: it determines the noun phrase's form and can also select the definite or indefinite verb paradigm. This page presents the architecture; quantifier usage and quantifier contrasts develop meaning and scope.

Minden vendég kap egy névtáblát.

Every guest receives a name badge.

Az összes ablak nyitva van.

All the windows are open.

Néhány kérdésre még nem válaszoltam.

I haven't answered a few questions yet.

Hungarian does not copy English plural marking after these determiners. The noun is vendég, ablak, kérdés, not vendégek, ablakok, kérdések. See singular nouns after quantities.

💡
After a quantity word, keep the head noun singular unless a separate construction specifically requires plural. The determiner already expresses distribution or quantity.

Minden versus mindegyik

Minden distributes over a whole domain: every relevant member. Mindegyik highlights each member as an individually identifiable choice and can stand alone more readily.

Minden diák megkapja az eredményt.

Every student will receive the result.

Mindegyik diák más témát választott.

Each student chose a different topic.

Before a noun, neither takes an article. Standalone case forms attach to the quantifier itself: mindent “everything,” mindenkinek “to everyone,” mindegyiket “each one/all of them,” mindegyikből “from each one.”

Mindegyiket megnézem, mielőtt döntök.

I'll look at each one before I decide.

The standalone mindegyiket is definite and selects megnézem. By contrast, noun phrases with minden conventionally select the indefinite conjugation despite their universal meaning:

Minden levelet elolvasok.

I read every letter.

This lexical definiteness behavior must be learned; logical completeness is not the same as grammatical definiteness.

Összes and its article

Attributive összes normally appears after the definite article: az összes dokumentum. Because the article is chosen by the next pronounced word, and összes begins with a vowel, this frame is always az összes.

Az összes dokumentumot elküldöm ma.

I'll send all the documents today.

Because the object includes az, it is grammatically definite and selects elküldöm, not elküldök. The noun remains singular dokumentumot, although English uses plural documents.

The pronoun összes can also stand predicatively or substantivally in context, but mindegyik and mind are often more natural for countable individual members. Beginners should store the robust frame az összes + singular noun.

Néhány and valamely

Néhány introduces a small, indefinite quantity. Valamely selects an unspecified member or type and is most common in careful, administrative, or academic prose (formal).

Néhány kolléga később érkezik.

A few colleagues will arrive later.

Ha valamely adat hiányzik, jelezze az ügyintézőnek.

If any item of data is missing, notify the administrator.

Objects with these plain indefinite determiners use the indefinite verb paradigm:

Néhány régi fényképet keresek.

I'm looking for a few old photographs.

Everyday speech usually prefers valamelyik “one of them/one of a known set” or valami “something” where formal prose uses valamely. Their form and definiteness behavior are not identical, so do not shorten valamelyik mechanically to valamely.

Semmilyen and negative concord

Semmilyen means “no kind of” in a negative clause and “any kind of” under certain negative or conditional scopes. It combines with a singular noun and normally requires clause negation.

Semmilyen hibát nem találtunk.

We didn't find any kind of error.

Nem kérek semmilyen segítséget.

I don't want any help of any kind.

Hungarian negative concord is grammatical: semmilyen and nem reinforce one semantic negation. Omitting nem does not produce the neutral meaning “no.” The object remains grammatically indefinite, so találtunk/kérek use the indefinite paradigm.

Case marking stays on the noun

When these determiners modify a noun, the noun carries plural-independent case marking; the determiner normally remains unchanged.

FunctionPhraseSegmentation
every book, objectminden könyvetminden könyv-et
to each childmindegyik gyereknekmindegyik gyerek-nek
from all housesaz összes házbólaz összes ház-ból
with a few friendsnéhány baráttalnéhány barát-tal
without any resultsemmilyen eredmény nélkülsemmilyen eredmény + postposition

When the quantifier stands alone, it bears case: mindegyikkel beszéltem “I spoke with each one,” semmilyet nem kérek “I don't want any kind.”

Scope and word order

Quantifiers before the noun form one constituent. Moving the entire phrase can mark topic or focus, but splitting determiner from noun is normally impossible.

Minden jelentést Éva ellenőriz.

Éva checks every report.

Éva minden jelentést ellenőriz.

Éva checks every report.

The first can foreground the universal object; the second is less marked. Minden still belongs with jelentést, and the object still selects indefinite ellenőriz.

💡
Logical “all” does not automatically mean grammatical definiteness. Check the actual determiner: minden könyvet olvasok, but az összes könyvet olvasom.

Segmentation practice

  1. minden könyvet → determiner + könyv-et; singular head plus accusative.
  2. az összes levelet → article + quantifier + levél → level-et; definite object.
  3. néhány házból → determiner + ház-ból; singular head plus elative.
  4. mindegyiketmindegyik-et; standalone quantifier bears accusative.
  5. semmilyen kérdésre → determiner + kérdés-re; clause still needs negation in the negative reading.

Common Mistakes

❌ Minden diákok megérkeztek.

Incorrect — after minden the noun and verb are singular in this distributive construction.

✅ Minden diák megérkezett.

Every student arrived.

❌ Összes dokumentumot elküldöm.

Incorrect in the neutral attributive pattern — összes normally requires the definite article.

✅ Az összes dokumentumot elküldöm.

I'll send all the documents.

❌ Minden levelet elolvasom.

Incorrect in neutral standard usage — minden selects the indefinite verb paradigm.

✅ Minden levelet elolvasok.

I read every letter.

❌ Semmilyen rendellenességet találtunk.

Wrong for ‘we found no irregularity’ — semmilyen requires clause negation.

✅ Semmilyen rendellenességet nem találtunk.

We didn't find any irregularity.

Key Takeaways

  • Quantity determiners normally take a singular head noun.
  • Minden, mindegyik, néhány, valamely, semmilyen appear without an article before a noun; attributive összes normally uses az összes.
  • Case goes on the noun when a noun is present and on the quantifier when it stands alone.
  • Semmilyen participates in Hungarian negative concord with nem.
  • Definiteness is lexical: minden objects take indefinite verbs, while az összes and mindegyik objects are definite.
  • Quantifier scope and focus affect word order without licensing English plural morphology.
