Sentence adverbs tell the listener how a speaker relates to a proposition. Talán presents it as possible, valószínűleg as probable, állítólag as attributed to someone else, and szerencsére as favorably evaluated. Focus-sensitive csak, főleg, and még instead interact with a selected participant, time, quantity, or state. Moving them can change which alternatives are included or excluded.
This page develops those meanings in discourse. The forms page maps their structure and neutral positions; the contrast page resolves their closest alternatives.
Talán: possibility and interpersonal softening
Talán lowers commitment to a statement. It is useful when evidence is incomplete or a future decision remains open.
Talán este eláll az eső, és sétálhatunk egyet.
Perhaps the rain will stop this evening and we can take a walk.
Talán Zsófi tudja, hol van a tartalék kulcs.
Maybe Zsófi knows where the spare key is.
It can also soften suggestions or disagreement by presenting them as possibilities rather than commands.
Talán előbb ellenőriznünk kellene az adatokat.
Perhaps we should check the data first.
This can sound tactful in neutral and formal discussion. It can also sound hesitant if the situation demands a firm decision. Register labels do not determine communicative force by themselves; context and intonation matter.
Valószínűleg: an inference judged likely
Valószínűleg expresses a stronger likelihood assessment than neutral talán. The speaker presents the proposition as the expected outcome based on available information.
A gép valószínűleg túlmelegedett, ezért állt le.
The machine probably overheated; that's why it stopped.
Valószínűleg lekéssük a csatlakozást, mert húsz percet késik a vonat.
We'll probably miss our connection because the train is twenty minutes late.
This is not certainty. If evidence changes, the speaker can revise the conclusion without contradiction. In academic and technical prose, valószínűleg is appropriate for a reasoned probability claim, but quantitative claims should use actual probabilities where available.
The form is related to adjective valószínű, yet -leg is not an all-purpose adverb ending. English probably cannot justify invented forms from other adjectives.
Állítólag: attributed information
Állítólag concerns evidence source rather than probability. It signals that other people, reports, or circulating claims support the statement, while leaving the speaker’s commitment open.
Az új üzlet állítólag éjfélig lesz nyitva.
The new shop will reportedly be open until midnight.
Állítólag olcsóbb lett a bérlet, de a honlapon még a régi ár szerepel.
Supposedly the pass has become cheaper, but the website still shows the old price.
The second sentence suggests doubt because contradictory evidence follows. In another context, állítólag can relay trusted information neutrally. English “allegedly” often carries legal or skeptical coloring; Hungarian állítólag is broader and common in everyday conversation.
When the source matters, name it:
A közlekedési vállalat tájékoztatása szerint hétfőn helyreáll a menetrend.
According to the transport company's announcement, the timetable will return to normal on Monday. (formal)
That wording lets readers evaluate the source. A formal report should not hide a known source behind állítólag merely to sound cautious.
Szerencsére: evaluating the outcome
Szerencsére adds the speaker’s positive judgment to a fact. It often introduces relief after a risk or inconvenience.
Szerencsére volt nálam készpénz, mert a terminál nem működött.
Fortunately, I had cash on me because the card terminal wasn't working.
A vihar szerencsére csak kisebb károkat okozott.
Fortunately, the storm caused only minor damage.
This stance is viewpoint-dependent. A result fortunate for one participant may be unfortunate for another, so formal or academic writing should use it only when the evaluative perspective is clear and relevant.
Do not confuse szerencsére with manner szerencsésen. Szerencsésen megérkeztek means they arrived safely/successfully; Szerencsére megérkeztek means the speaker considers their arrival fortunate.
A hegymászók szerencsésen visszatértek a táborba.
The climbers returned to camp safely.
Csak: exclusion and pragmatic minimization
Exclusive csak associates with the constituent immediately following it and excludes relevant alternatives.
Csak két kolléga maradt bent estig.
Only two colleagues stayed until the evening.
A kollégák csak estig maradtak bent.
The colleagues stayed only until the evening.
A kollégák csak az első jelentést fejezték be.
The colleagues finished only the first report.
The alternatives differ: number of colleagues, duration, or which report. The focused object az első jelentést stands immediately before the verb; prefix be follows fejezték.
In requests, csak can minimize the demand:
Csak egy gyors kérdést szeretnék feltenni.
I'd just like to ask one quick question.
This is common in neutral and informal interaction, but the request may still take time. The particle presents it as limited; it does not objectively guarantee brevity.
Főleg: prominence without exclusion
Főleg highlights a main subset, circumstance, or reason while allowing others.
A kiállítás főleg fiatal látogatókat vonz.
The exhibition attracts mainly young visitors.
Főleg a magas bérleti díjak miatt költöztek el.
They moved away mainly because of the high rents.
Replacing főleg with csak would make the claim exclusive: only young visitors, or only that reason. Főleg deliberately leaves a remainder.
Formal elsősorban often expresses priority rather than numerical majority:
A támogatás elsősorban kisvállalkozások számára igényelhető.
The subsidy is intended primarily for small businesses. (formal)
This may still allow other applicants. Különösen “especially” singles out a notable member or circumstance, while főleg profiles the main share or domain. Boundaries overlap in real usage.
Még as still and not yet
Temporal még says an earlier state continues. With negation, még nem says the expected transition has not happened up to reference time.
A gyerekek még alszanak, ne csapd be az ajtót!
The children are still asleep; don't slam the door!
Még nem kaptam választ az e-mailemre.
I haven't received a reply to my email yet.
Compare már nem “no longer,” which says the earlier state has ended: A gyerekek már nem alszanak “The children are no longer asleep.” English “still/yet/already” forms a system that Hungarian distributes mainly among még and már plus negation.
Még as additional and scalar
Before a quantity or noun phrase, még adds another amount.
Még két székre szükségünk lesz.
We will need two more chairs.
Maradj még egy kicsit, mindjárt kész a vacsora!
Stay a little longer; dinner will be ready in a moment!
In még X is, it marks an unexpectedly included point on a scale.
Még a legszigorúbb bíráló is támogatta a javaslatot.
Even the strictest reviewer supported the proposal.
Is is part of this additive construction. Bare még a legszigorúbb bíráló without is does not express the same complete “even” pattern in neutral Hungarian.
Scope across the clause
Changing placement changes the relevant alternatives.
A csomag valószínűleg csak pénteken érkezik meg.
The parcel probably won't arrive until Friday.
Here valószínűleg scopes over the proposition, while csak pénteken restricts arrival time. Layered placement prevents English “probably only” from being copied blindly.
A short dialogue
This exchange is natural (informal) Hungarian about a delayed colleague.
– Bence még nem ért ide? – Még nem. Talán dugóba került.
– Hasn't Bence arrived yet? – Not yet. Maybe he got stuck in traffic.
– Állítólag busszal jön. – Akkor valószínűleg még várnunk kell.
– Apparently he's coming by bus. – Then we'll probably have to wait a bit longer.
– Szerencsére csak tízkor kezdődik a megbeszélés.
– Fortunately, the meeting doesn't start until ten.
Állítólag relays a report, valószínűleg draws an inference from it, and talán offers an open possibility. Csak tízkor restricts the start to the later time, yielding the idiomatic English “not until ten.”
Formal and informal evidence marking
Everyday (informal) speech readily uses an unnamed source:
Állítólag bezár a sarki pékség.
Apparently the bakery on the corner is closing. (informal)
Formal prose often names evidence and grades inference:
Az előzetes adatok alapján a kereslet valószínűleg tovább növekszik.
On the basis of the preliminary data, demand will probably continue to grow. (formal)
The second distinguishes evidence (az előzetes adatok alapján) from inference (valószínűleg). That precision is more informative than replacing every English -ly adverb with a superficially similar Hungarian ending.
Common Mistakes
❌ Valószínű később indulunk.
Incorrect — bare adjective valószínű cannot directly serve as the sentence adverb 'probably' here.
✅ Valószínűleg később indulunk.
We'll probably leave later.
❌ Csak Mari tegnap hívott fel.
Wrong for 'Mari called only yesterday' — csak incorrectly associates with Mari.
✅ Mari csak tegnap hívott fel.
Mari called only yesterday.
❌ A vendégek nem még érkeztek meg.
Incorrect for 'not yet' — még precedes nem.
✅ A vendégek még nem érkeztek meg.
The guests haven't arrived yet.
❌ Főleg Péter jött el, senki más.
Semantically mismatched — főleg allows alternatives, while senki más excludes them.
✅ Csak Péter jött el, senki más.
Only Péter came, nobody else.
❌ Szerencsésen nem késett a vonat.
Wrong for the speaker's relieved 'fortunately' — szerencsésen describes manner or successful outcome.
✅ Szerencsére nem késett a vonat.
Fortunately, the train wasn't late.
Key Takeaways
- Talán keeps a possibility open; valószínűleg presents an inference as likely.

- Szerencsére evaluates a proposition, while szerencsésen describes a successful or fortunate manner/outcome.
- Csak excludes alternatives and must stand next to its intended associate.
- Főleg identifies the main subset or reason while permitting others.
- Temporal még means “still/yet”; before quantities it means “more/another”; még X is means “even X.”
