Possessive and necessity predicates

English builds possession and necessity around subject verbs: I have a ticket; I need a ticket; I have to buy a ticket. Hindi uses three different constituent structures: मेरे पास टिकट है, मुझे टिकट चाहिए, and मुझे टिकट खरीदना है/पड़ेगा. The English subject corresponds to a के पास, genitive, or को phrase, while the possessed item or infinitival action determines much of the Hindi agreement.

These constructions are grouped together because their central human participant is non-canonical: the possessor or obligor does not behave like an ordinary unmarked agreement subject. Their meanings are not interchangeable, however. Case and predicate choice distinguish what someone has from what someone needs and from what someone is required to do.

Alienable possession with के पास

For an owned object, an available resource, temporary custody, or something at a person's disposal, the neutral structure is:

possessor + के पास + possessed item + होना

इमरान के पास दो अतिरिक्त टिकट हैं।

imrān ke pās do atirikt ṭikaṭ haiṃ.

Imran has two extra tickets.

मेरे पास आज कार नहीं है।

mere pās āj kār nahīṃ hai.

I don't have a car today.

Plural टिकट controls हैं; singular feminine कार selects है. Neither singular इमरान nor first-person मेरे makes the copula first-person. Structurally, the item exists in the possessor's sphere.

The possessor phrase is one constituent: [इमरान के पास]. English preposition-first order and direct pronoun मैं पास are impossible in the neutral Standard Hindi construction. See के पास possession and proximity for its literal “near” use.

Relational possession with a genitive

Kinship, body parts, inherent features, and part–whole relations commonly use का/के/की, not के पास.

नूर की तीन छोटी बहनें हैं।

nūr kī tīn choṭī bahneṃ haiṃ.

Noor has three younger sisters.

इस पुराने मकान की केवल दो खिड़कियाँ हैं।

is purāne makān kī keval do khiṛkiyā̃ haiṃ.

This old house has only two windows.

Feminine plural बहनें/खिड़कियाँ controls genitive की and plural copula हैं. The possessor sits inside a larger noun phrase: [नूर की तीन छोटी बहनें]. This differs structurally from [नूर के पास] [तीन किताबें].

💡
Translate the relation, not English have: के पास for holdings and availability; a genitive noun phrase for kin, parts, and inherent relations.

Need with चाहिए

For a needed or desired thing, the person takes को and present चाहिए is invariant:

हमें प्रस्तुति के लिए बड़ा कमरा चाहिए।

hameṃ prastuti ke lie baṛā kamrā cāhie.

We need a large room for the presentation.

संपादक को आज तीन साफ़ तस्वीरें चाहिए।

sampādak ko āj tīn sāf tasvīreṃ cāhie.

The editor needs three clear photographs today.

The singular or plural needed item does not change present चाहिए. There is no added present copula: चाहिए है is not the neutral contemporary construction. In the past, however, an auxiliary appears and agrees with the needed item:

हमें कल दो गाड़ियाँ चाहिए थीं।

hameṃ kal do gāṛiyā̃ cāhie thīṃ.

We needed two cars yesterday.

Feminine plural गाड़ियाँ licenses थीं. The dative plural person हमें does not select the auxiliary.

Possession versus need: a controlled contrast

मेरे पास पहचान-पत्र की नई प्रति है।

mere pās pahcān-patr kī naī prati hai.

I have a new copy of the identification document.

मुझे पहचान-पत्र की नई प्रति चाहिए।

mujhe pahcān-patr kī naī prati cāhie.

I need a new copy of the identification document.

The first asserts availability; the second presents an unmet or contextually relevant need. Replacing मेरे पास with मुझे does not merely rearrange the sentence—it changes the predicate and relation.

The possessive example begins with what is currently in the speaker's possession. The necessity example makes the speaker a dative needer. In both, feminine प्रति is the relevant nominal, but present चाहिए hides number and gender agreement.

Questions preserve the same contrast. आपके पास कितने टिकट हैं? asks how many tickets are currently available to you; आपको कितने टिकट चाहिए? asks how many you need. English begins both answers with I have/I need, but Hindi case keeps possession and necessity separate.

आपके पास अभी कितने खाली फ़ॉर्म हैं, और आपको कितने चाहिए?

āpke pās abhī kitne khālī form haiṃ, aur āpko kitne cāhie?

How many blank forms do you have now, and how many do you need? (respectful)

Ellipsis removes the repeated noun after कितने, but it does not remove the two different relations. Plural हैं belongs to possession; invariant चाहिए belongs to need.

Required actions with infinitive + होना

Hindi often expresses an assigned, intended, scheduled, or settled obligation as:

obligor + को + infinitive + होना

मुझे कल सुबह दूतावास जाना है।

mujhe kal subah dūtāvās jānā hai.

I have to go to the embassy tomorrow morning.

कर्मचारियों को शाम तक ये रसीदें भेजनी हैं।

karmacāriyoṃ ko śām tak ye rasīdeṃ bhejnī haiṃ.

The employees have to send these receipts by evening.

The dative person supplies the understood actor. Intransitive जाना remains default masculine singular. In the second example, unmarked feminine plural रसीदें controls infinitive भेजनी and plural auxiliary हैं.

Past and future forms continue that agreement:

रिया को वह शिकायत कल ही लिखनी थी।

riyā ko vah śikāyat kal hī likhnī thī.

Riya was supposed to write that complaint yesterday.

Feminine शिकायत controls लिखनी थी, not feminine रिया. This is why the correct analysis must inspect the infinitive's object rather than simply match the person under obligation.

Advice and external necessity

चाहिए with an infinitive evaluates an action as advisable or normatively appropriate. पड़ना presents the action as imposed by circumstances, a rule, or a consequence.

आपको यात्रा से पहले बीमा की शर्तें पढ़नी चाहिए।

āpko yātrā se pahle bīmā kī śarteṃ paṛhnī cāhie.

You should read the insurance terms before traveling. (respectful)

दावा करने पर आपको मूल रसीदें दिखानी पड़ेंगी।

dāvā karne par āpko mūl rasīdeṃ dikhānī paṛeṅgī.

If you make a claim, you will have to show the original receipts. (respectful)

In both, आपको is the actor but not the agreement controller. Feminine plural शर्तें controls पढ़नी; feminine plural रसीदें controls दिखानी पड़ेंगी. The difference lies in modality: recommended conduct versus an externally triggered requirement.

Negative scope also differs. आपको वहाँ नहीं जाना चाहिए advises against going. आपको वहाँ नहीं जाना पड़ेगा says going will not be necessary. English shouldn't and won't have to must not collapse into one Hindi negative.

💡
In a necessity clause, first identify the modal meaning, then the dative obligor, then any unmarked object that can control the infinitive. Do not make the verb agree with the English subject.

Clause boundaries and reported needs

Each embedded clause preserves its own case frame:

फ़राह ने बताया कि उसके पास लैपटॉप है, लेकिन उसे नया चार्जर चाहिए।

farāh ne batāyā ki uske pās laipṭop hai, lekin use nayā cārjar cāhie.

Farah said that she has a laptop but needs a new charger.

Matrix फ़राह ने belongs to बताया. Inside the कि clause, उसके पास marks possession and उसे marks the needer. No noun crosses the finite boundary to control agreement elsewhere.

The contrast also supplies a constituency test: उसके पास लैपटॉप है can stand as a complete embedded proposition, while उसे नया चार्जर चाहिए is a coordinated second proposition with its own predicate.

Common Mistakes

1. Translating have with a nominative copular clause

❌ मैं दो टिकट हूँ।

Incorrect — this means 'I am two tickets,' not 'I have two tickets.'

✅ मेरे पास दो टिकट हैं।

mere pās do ṭikaṭ haiṃ.

I have two tickets.

2. Making the copula agree with the possessor

❌ सलमा के पास नई साइकिल हैं।

Incorrect — singular साइकिल controls है.

✅ सलमा के पास नई साइकिल है।

salmā ke pās naī sāikil hai.

Salma has a new bicycle.

3. Adding a present copula after चाहिए

❌ हमें अभी शांत कमरा चाहिए है।

Incorrect — present चाहिए is invariant and takes no copula here.

✅ हमें अभी शांत कमरा चाहिए।

hameṃ abhī śānt kamrā cāhie.

We need a quiet room right now.

4. Using a nominative obligor

❌ वे कल दो फ़ॉर्म भरने हैं।

Incorrect — the people under the requirement take को.

✅ उन्हें कल दो फ़ॉर्म भरने हैं।

unheṃ kal do form bharne haiṃ.

They have to fill in two forms tomorrow.

5. Agreeing necessity with the dative person

❌ लड़कियों को यह अनुमति-पत्र लिखनी पड़ेगी।

Incorrect — masculine अनुमति-पत्र controls लिखना पड़ेगा, not the feminine plural obligor.

✅ लड़कियों को यह अनुमति-पत्र लिखना पड़ेगा।

laṛkiyoṃ ko yah anumati-patr likhnā paṛegā.

The girls will have to write this letter of authorization.

Key Takeaways

  • के पास + होना expresses holdings and availability; the possessed item controls the copula.
  • Genitive possession packages possessor and related noun inside one noun phrase; का/के/की agrees with the related noun.
  • A needer or obligor bears को, not nominative case.
  • Present चाहिए is invariant; action necessity uses an infinitive whose unmarked object may control agreement.
  • होना, चाहिए, and पड़ना distinguish settled obligation, advice/norm, and externally imposed necessity.
