A good Hindi refusal makes the answer clear while protecting the relationship. Depending on the situation, speakers combine नहीं, appreciation, regret, a brief reason, limited scope such as इस बार “this time,” and an alternative. The aim is not to hide the refusal: a beautifully indirect answer that leaves the other person unsure is often less considerate than a clear नहीं, धन्यवाद. Compare the host's side of the exchange on offering and accepting hospitality.
Invitations, offers, requests, and unsafe pressure require different refusals. A declined cup of tea needs little explanation; a wedding invitation deserves more recognition; a request from a colleague may call for a realistic alternative; a personal boundary can be stated directly.
Declining an offer: mark what you are refusing
For food, drink, or a small service, नहीं, धन्यवाद is neutral and clear. Adding अभी or बस narrows the refusal.
नहीं, धन्यवाद; मैं चाय नहीं लूँगा।
nahīṃ, dhanyavād; maĩ cāy nahīṃ lū̃gā.
No, thank you; I won't have tea. (neutral/respectful; male speaker)
अभी नहीं, धन्यवाद; शायद थोड़ी देर बाद।
abhī nahīṃ, dhanyavād; śāyad thoṛī der bād.
Not right now, thank you; perhaps a little later. (respectful)
बस, इतना काफ़ी है—खाना बहुत अच्छा था।
bas, itnā kāfī hai—khānā bahut acchā thā.
That's enough, thank you—the food was excellent. (warm refusal of more food)
अभी नहीं refuses the timing, not necessarily the item forever. बस, इतना काफ़ी है closes further serving while acknowledging sufficiency. A warm tone can carry appreciation, but appreciation should not be so vague that the host thinks the guest accepted.
Responsive जी नहीं is respectful (formal) and common in clear answers to yes–no questions:
क्या आपको और कुछ चाहिए? — जी नहीं, धन्यवाद।
kyā āpko aur kuch cāhie? — jī nahīṃ, dhanyavād.
Do you need anything else? — No, thank you. (respectful service exchange)
Here जी acknowledges the interlocutor; it does not reverse the negative meaning of नहीं.
Declining an invitation: appreciation + inability + scope
A socially complete decline often recognizes the invitation before giving the negative answer.
निमंत्रण के लिए बहुत धन्यवाद, लेकिन मैं इस बार शामिल नहीं हो पाऊँगी।
nimantraṇ ke lie bahut dhanyavād, lekin maĩ is bār śāmil nahīṃ ho pāū̃gī.
Thank you very much for the invitation, but I won't be able to attend this time. (respectful; female speaker)
मेरा बहुत मन था, लेकिन उसी दिन मुझे दिल्ली जाना पड़ेगा।
merā bahut man thā, lekin usī din mujhe dillī jānā paṛegā.
I really wanted to come, but I'll have to go to Delhi that same day. (neutral)
इस बार नहीं आ पाऊँगा; अगली बार ज़रूर मिलते हैं।
is bār nahīṃ ā pāū̃gā; aglī bār zarūr milte haiṃ.
I won't be able to come this time; let's definitely meet next time. (familiar; male speaker)
नहीं आ पाऊँगा/पाऊँगी presents the nonattendance as something the speaker cannot manage under the circumstances. It often sounds less rejecting than volitional नहीं आऊँगा/आऊँगी “I will not come,” which can imply a decision or refusal. Do not use inability dishonestly as a compulsory politeness formula, however. A simple truthful limit is preferable to an elaborate false excuse.
Declining a request: inability, feasibility, or boundary
When someone asks for work, time, or a favor, first identify why the answer is no. Hindi distinguishes personal inability from impersonal infeasibility and unwillingness.
| Frame | Typical meaning | Social effect |
|---|---|---|
| मैं नहीं कर पाऊँगा/पाऊँगी | I will not be able to do it | speaker's practical inability |
| यह आज नहीं हो पाएगा | this will not be possible today | focuses on feasibility rather than blame |
| मैं यह नहीं करूँगा/करूँगी | I will not do this | firm volitional refusal |
| मेरे लिए यह संभव नहीं है | this is not possible/acceptable for me | formal or boundary-setting |
माफ़ कीजिए, यह काम आज पूरा नहीं हो पाएगा। क्या कल दोपहर तक चलेगा?
māf kījie, yah kām āj pūrā nahīṃ ho pāegā. kyā kal dopahar tak calegā?
I'm sorry, this work won't be possible today. Would tomorrow afternoon work? (respectful workplace refusal)
मैं आज बच्चों को नहीं संभाल पाऊँगी, लेकिन शनिवार को संभाल सकती हूँ।
maĩ āj baccoṃ ko nahīṃ sambhāl pāū̃gī, lekin śanivār ko sambhāl saktī hū̃.
I won't be able to look after the children today, but I can on Saturday. (familiar; female speaker)
माफ़ कीजिए, मैं आपके लिए गलत जानकारी दर्ज नहीं कर सकता।
māf kījie, maĩ āpke lie galat jānkārī darj nahīṃ kar saktā.
I'm sorry, I cannot enter false information for you. (respectful, firm professional boundary; male speaker)
The alternative should be real. क्या कल... चलेगा? checks whether a new deadline suits the requester; it does not impose it. For an unethical request, a counteroffer is unnecessary and नहीं कर सकता appropriately states a boundary.
Formal and familiar refusals
Respectful interaction commonly uses माफ़ कीजिए, अफ़सोस है, संभव नहीं, and honorific agreement (formal/neutral). Familiar speech can use shorter formulas without damaging closeness.
अफ़सोस है कि हम आपके प्रस्ताव को स्वीकार नहीं कर सकते।
afsos hai ki ham āpke prastāv ko svīkār nahīṃ kar sakte.
We regret that we cannot accept your proposal. (formal)
बुरा मत मानना, लेकिन आज मेरा बाहर जाने का मन नहीं है।
burā mat mānnā, lekin āj merā bāhar jāne kā man nahīṃ hai.
Don't take it badly, but I don't feel like going out today. (familiar)
The familiar sentence honestly states preference rather than inventing inability. बुरा मत मानना can soften sensitive news, but if overused it may itself announce that something offensive is coming. Relationship and tone decide whether it feels caring or defensive.
Full exchange: a request and workable alternative
सहकर्मी: क्या आप आज मेरी पाली ले सकते हैं? आरव: माफ़ कीजिए, आज मैं देर तक नहीं रुक पाऊँगा। अगर आपके लिए ठीक हो, तो मैं शुक्रवार की पाली ले सकता हूँ। सहकर्मी: शुक्रवार भी चलेगा, धन्यवाद।
sahkarmī: kyā āp āj merī pālī le sakte haiṃ? ārav: māf kījie, āj maĩ der tak nahīṃ ruk pāū̃gā. agar āpke lie ṭhīk ho, to maĩ śukravār kī pālī le saktā hū̃. sahkarmī: śukravār bhī calegā, dhanyavād.
Colleague: Could you take my shift today? Aarav: Sorry, I won't be able to stay late today. If it works for you, I can take Friday's shift. Colleague: Friday works too, thank you. (respectful collegial exchange)
Aarav answers the actual request, limits the refusal to today, and offers Friday conditionally. Repeating माफ़ कीजिए or giving a long personal history would not make the answer more useful.
Full exchange: declining hospitality without ambiguity
मेज़बान: थोड़ी खीर और लीजिए ना। मेहमान: नहीं, धन्यवाद; सच में पेट भर गया। मेज़बान: ठीक है, बाद में मन हो तो बता दीजिएगा।
mezbān: thoṛī khīr aur lījie nā. mehmān: nahīṃ, dhanyavād; sac meṃ peṭ bhar gayā. mezbān: ṭhīk hai, bād meṃ man ho to batā dījiegā.
Host: Please have a little more rice pudding. Guest: No, thank you; I'm genuinely full. Host: All right; let me know if you feel like some later. (respectful hospitable exchange)
The host's ना warmly renews the offer. The guest uses सच में to remove uncertainty. The host accepts the answer and leaves a future option. This is better interactional alignment than treating every नहीं as ritual modesty.
Intonation: hesitant, final, or confrontational
A lengthened, rising नहीं... can signal hesitation and invite the other speaker to suggest another option. A short, low नहीं। closes the matter. Neither contour is inherently rude. When safety, consent, money, or a personal boundary is involved, the speaker is entitled to be final.
नहीं। मैं इसके लिए राज़ी नहीं हूँ।
nahīṃ. maĩ iske lie rāzī nahīṃ hū̃.
No. I do not agree to this. (firm boundary)
Adding शायद here would weaken a deliberate boundary. Pragmatic skill means choosing enough mitigation for the relationship, not making every no negotiable.
Repairing an abrupt decline
A colleague invites you to an important celebration:
❌ मैं नहीं आऊँगा।
Socially abrupt in this important invitation context — it sounds like categorical unwillingness.
✅ बुलाने के लिए धन्यवाद, लेकिन मैं उस दिन शहर में नहीं रहूँगा।
bulāne ke lie dhanyavād, lekin maĩ us din śahar meṃ nahīṃ rahū̃gā.
Thank you for inviting me, but I won't be in town that day. (respectful; male speaker)
The repair recognizes the invitation and supplies a concise reason. It does not claim that नहीं आऊँगा is ungrammatical; it recalibrates the social act.
Common Mistakes
Saying only thank you when the answer is no
❌ धन्यवाद।
Ambiguous as a response to an offer — it may be heard as acceptance or appreciation.
✅ नहीं, धन्यवाद; अभी कुछ नहीं चाहिए।
nahīṃ, dhanyavād; abhī kuch nahīṃ cāhie.
No, thank you; I don't need anything right now. (clear refusal)
Adding a present auxiliary to future achieved ability
❌ मैं कल यह नहीं कर पाऊँगा हूँ।
Incorrect — future पाऊँगा cannot take present auxiliary हूँ.
✅ मैं कल यह नहीं कर पाऊँगा।
maĩ kal yah nahīṃ kar pāū̃gā.
I won't be able to do this tomorrow. (male speaker)
Forgetting gender in a first-person future
❌ मैं नहीं आ पाऊँगा।
Incorrect for a female speaker in careful Standard Hindi — the future must be feminine.
✅ मैं नहीं आ पाऊँगी।
maĩ nahīṃ ā pāū̃gī.
I won't be able to come. (female speaker)
Offering an alternative as a new command
❌ आज नहीं होगा; कल तक इंतज़ार कीजिए।
Too unilateral for the intended peer negotiation; the alternative is imposed rather than checked.
✅ आज नहीं हो पाएगा; क्या कल सुबह तक ठीक रहेगा?
āj nahīṃ ho pāegā; kyā kal subah tak ṭhīk rahegā?
It won't be possible today; would tomorrow morning be all right? (respectful negotiation)
