English often describes weather with dummy it plus an adjective or verb: it is raining, it is windy, it is hot. Hindi normally lets the weather noun or condition form the predicate directly: बारिश हो रही है, हवा चल रही है, गर्मी है. The missing English-style subject is not omitted information; Hindi simply does not require a dummy pronoun there.
The useful units are collocations. Rain होती है, wind चलती है, sunshine निकलती है, fog छाता है, and seasonal heat or cold पड़ती है. These head verbs carry aspect and tense while the weather noun often controls agreement. For the subjectless clause pattern itself, see null subjects and weather clauses.
General weather: मौसम + adjective
Masculine मौसम combines productively with adjectives: अच्छा, ख़राब, साफ़, ठंडा, गरम, सुहावना.
आज मौसम साफ़ और सुहावना है।
āj mausam sāf aur suhāvnā hai.
The weather is clear and pleasant today.
शाम तक मौसम ठंडा हो जाएगा।
śām tak mausam ṭhaṇḍā ho jāegā.
The weather will turn cold by evening.
The adjective ठंडा and compound predicate हो जाएगा agree with masculine singular मौसम. By contrast, feminine condition nouns take feminine predicates: गर्मी बढ़ गई, ठंड पड़ रही है.
मौसम कैसा है? asks for an overall characterization. A specific condition asks its own question: क्या बारिश हो रही है?, हवा तेज़ है?, or कितनी ठंड है?
Rain, snow, and hail
Neutral Standard Hindi most often says बारिश होना; progressive बारिश हो रही है is the everyday “it is raining.” वर्षा होना is more Sanskritic and common in forecasts, formal reports, and technical writing (formal). बरसना presents active falling, often vivid or literary but also ordinary in पानी बरस रहा है.
सुबह से हल्की बारिश हो रही है।
subah se halkī bāriś ho rahī hai.
It has been raining lightly since morning.
रात में मूसलाधार बारिश हुई।
rāt meṃ mūsalādhār bāriś huī.
There was torrential rain during the night.
Feminine बारिश controls रही/हुई. Intensity is commonly expressed by हल्की/तेज़/भारी/मूसलाधार बारिश, not by forcing an adverb onto English rain.
Snow and hail prefer पड़ना:
पहाड़ों पर बर्फ़ पड़ रही है और ऊँचे इलाक़ों में ओले भी पड़ सकते हैं।
pahāṛoṃ par barf paṛ rahī hai aur ū̃ce ilāqoṃ meṃ ole bhī paṛ sakte haiṃ.
It is snowing in the mountains, and hail may also fall in higher areas.
Mass-noun बर्फ़ is feminine here; plural ओले controls पड़ सकते हैं. बारिश पड़ रही है occurs regionally and colloquially, but बारिश हो रही है is the safest broad Standard Hindi choice.
Wind, sun, clouds, and fog
Wind चलती है, sunlight निकलती है, the sun निकलता है, clouds छाते हैं, and fog छाता है. The agreement contrast is lexical: feminine धूप निकलती है, but masculine सूरज निकलता है.
आज बहुत तेज़ हवा चल रही है।
āj bahut tez havā cal rahī hai.
It is very windy today. (literally, a very strong wind is blowing)
बारिश रुकते ही धूप निकल आई।
bāriś rukte hī dhūp nikal āī.
The sun came out as soon as the rain stopped.
सुबह पूरे शहर पर घना कोहरा छाया था।
subah pūre śahar par ghanā kohrā chāyā thā.
Dense fog covered the whole city in the morning.
The vector आना in निकल आई emphasizes the arrival of visible sunshine. कोहरा छाना literally pictures fog spreading as a covering. These images are productive enough to understand, but the noun–verb pair is conventional: English there is fog should not lead to कोहरा है in every context, though आज बहुत कोहरा है is possible as a state description.
Cloud cover uses plural agreement when बादल is plural:
आसमान में बादल छाए हुए हैं, लेकिन अभी बारिश नहीं हो रही।
āsmān meṃ bādal chāe hue haiṃ, lekin abhī bāriś nahīṃ ho rahī.
Clouds are covering the sky, but it isn't raining yet.
Present progressive negation can omit the final copula in conversational Hindi (नहीं हो रही); नहीं हो रही है is the full neutral form.
Seasonal heat and cold: गर्मी/ठंड पड़ना
गर्मी है and ठंड है describe current conditions. गर्मी पड़ना/ठंड पड़ना presents the onset or recurring seasonal force of heat/cold.
इस साल मई में बहुत गर्मी पड़ रही है।
is sāl maī meṃ bahut garmī paṛ rahī hai.
It is extremely hot this May.
रात होते ही ठंड बढ़ गई।
rāt hote hī ṭhaṇḍ baṛh gaī.
The cold intensified as soon as night fell.
लू चलना is the conventional expression for hot, dry summer winds in northern India; it is culturally and climatically more specific than generic “hot wind.”
दोपहर में लू चल रही है, इसलिए बाहर मत निकलना।
dopahar meṃ lū cal rahī hai, islie bāhar mat nikalnā.
A hot summer wind is blowing in the afternoon, so don't go outside. (familiar warning)
Weather versus personal sensation
आज ठंड है describes the environment. मुझे ठंड लग रही है describes what one person feels. The experiencer takes को, and feminine ठंड controls लग रही है.
कमरे में ठंड नहीं है, लेकिन मुझे ठंड लग रही है।
kamre meṃ ṭhaṇḍ nahīṃ hai, lekin mujhe ṭhaṇḍ lag rahī hai.
The room isn't cold, but I feel cold.
Likewise, आज बहुत गर्मी है describes the day, while मुझे गर्मी लग रही है means “I feel hot.” English speakers often say I am hot; Hindi generally packages temperature discomfort as a sensation reaching the experiencer.
Temperature and change
The formal measurement frame is तापमान X डिग्री है. Change combines तापमान with बढ़ना/गिरना/पहुँचना.
दोपहर का तापमान चौबीस डिग्री सेल्सियस है।
dopahar kā tāpmān caubīs ḍigrī selsiyas hai.
The afternoon temperature is twenty-four degrees Celsius.
रात में तापमान शून्य से नीचे गिर सकता है।
rāt meṃ tāpmān śūnya se nīce gir saktā hai.
At night the temperature may fall below zero.
Masculine तापमान controls सकता है. The comparison point takes से in शून्य से नीचे.
Forecasts and probability
बारिश होगी predicts rain; बारिश हो सकती है marks possibility; बारिश होने की संभावना है is formal forecast language. None requires an English-style it.
मौसम विभाग के अनुसार शाम को तेज़ बारिश होने की संभावना है।
mausam vibhāg ke anusār śām ko tez bāriś hone kī sambhāvnā hai.
According to the weather department, heavy rain is likely in the evening. (formal forecast)
लगता है, बारिश आने वाली है।
lagtā hai, bāriś āne vālī hai.
It looks as though it's about to rain. (conversational)
The second uses prospective आने वाली है, agreeing with feminine बारिश. लगता है is an impersonal-seeming evaluation here, not agreement with the speaker.
