Hindi body-part idioms are small grammatical constructions, not lists of colorful words. In काम में हाथ बँटाना, किसी से मुँह मोड़ना, बात दिल पर लेना, and आँखें चुराना, the body noun has a conventional number, its participant has a conventional case marker, and the verb supplies the inflectional slot. Replacing one piece with a plausible synonym can destroy the idiomatic reading.
Most expressions on this page are neutral or informal and common in speech, journalism, and commentary. They become inappropriate when a literal, unambiguous description is required—for example, a medical record or legal finding. The key is to learn each idiom as meaning + case frame + fixed wording, while recognizing how its literal image motivates the figurative use.
The singular-versus-plural choices also build on the ordinary grammar of paired body parts, even when the resulting phrase is idiomatic.
How body-part idioms are built
Three principles organize the system:
- The body noun may be fixed as singular (हाथ बँटाना, दिल जीतना, आँख लगना) or plural (हाथ खड़े करना, आँखें चुराना).
- The other participant receives the postposition selected by the idiom: X से मुँह मोड़ना, X की आँखों में धूल झोंकना, X का दिल जीतना.
- Tense, aspect, honorificity, and vector verbs appear on the verbal part: मुँह मोड़ लिया, दिल जीत लिया, आँखें खुल गईं.
नई जानकारी सामने आई तो जाँच दल की आँखें खुल गईं।
naī jānkārī sāmne āī to jā̃c dal kī ā̃kheṃ khul gaīṃ.
When the new information emerged, the investigation team finally realized what was happening.
The eyes did not literally open after sleep. Yet plural आँखें still controls feminine plural खुल गईं. Idiomatic meaning does not erase ordinary agreement.
हाथ: assistance, agency, access, and surrender
The hand naturally represents practical agency. These expressions range from transparent metaphor to fixed idiom.
| Expression | Meaning and case frame | Register |
|---|---|---|
| हाथ बँटाना | help with work; X का हाथ बँटाना / काम में हाथ बँटाना | neutral |
| हाथ लगना | come into one's possession; X के हाथ लगना | neutral |
| X से हाथ धो बैठना | lose X, often through one's mistake | informal, vivid |
| हाथ खड़े कर देना | admit inability or give up | informal to neutral journalism |
| हाथ पर हाथ धरे बैठना | sit idle instead of acting | critical, idiomatic |
रसोई में मेरा हाथ बँटा दो, तो खाना जल्दी तैयार हो जाएगा।
rasoī meṃ merā hāth bãṭā do, to khānā jaldī taiyār ho jāegā.
Give me a hand in the kitchen and the food will be ready sooner. (informal)
गोपनीय दस्तावेज़ ग़लत लोगों के हाथ लग गए।
gopnīya dastāvez ġalat logoṃ ke hāth lag gae.
The confidential documents fell into the wrong hands. (formal or journalistic)
लापरवाही के कारण वह अच्छी नौकरी से हाथ धो बैठा।
lāparvāhī ke kāraṇ vah acchī naukrī se hāth dho baiṭhā.
Because of carelessness, he ended up losing a good job.
In the last sentence, धो बैठना does not describe washing and sitting. बैठना adds an adverse, often regrettable completed result: the loss happened, and the subject is now stuck with its consequences. The separand takes से. This idiom is too vivid for a dry formal notice, which would use नौकरी खोना.
तकनीकी समस्या आते ही पूरी टीम ने हाथ खड़े कर दिए।
taknīkī samasyā āte hī pūrī ṭīm ne hāth khaṛe kar die.
As soon as the technical problem arose, the whole team threw up its hands and admitted defeat.
Literal हाथ खड़े करना can mean physically raise one's hands; context supplies surrender or inability. हाथ पर हाथ धरे बैठना adds criticism: the subject has the capacity or duty to act but remains passive.
मुँह: social orientation, humiliation, and response
Because the face and mouth are socially exposed, मुँह idioms often concern engagement, refusal, shame, appetite, or sulking.
- X से मुँह मोड़ना — turn away from, reject, or abandon X; neutral but evaluative.
- मुँह की खाना — suffer defeat or humiliation; informal and journalistic.
- X को मुँह लगाना — engage with or encourage someone regarded as quarrelsome, insolent, or not worth answering; informal and socially judgmental.
- मुँह फुलाना — sulk; informal.
- मुँह में पानी आना — one's mouth waters, literally or at an appealing prospect; neutral.
मुश्किल समय में उसके पुराने साथियों ने उससे मुँह मोड़ लिया।
muśkil samay meṃ uske purāne sāthiyoṃ ne usse mũh moṛ liyā.
In difficult times, his/her old associates turned their backs on him/her.
बिना तैयारी के बहस में उतरे प्रवक्ता को मुँह की खानी पड़ी।
binā taiyārī ke bahas meṃ utre pravaktā ko mũh kī khānī paṛī.
The spokesperson entered the debate unprepared and suffered an embarrassing defeat. (journalistic)
मुँह की खाना is lexically fixed; do not try to identify a literal feminine noun omitted after की or change it to masculine का. The added पड़ना frames the unpleasant outcome as something the spokesperson had to undergo.
वह सिर्फ़ झगड़ा चाहता है; उसे मुँह मत लगाओ।
vah sirf jhagṛā cāhtā hai; use mũh mat lagāo.
He only wants an argument; don't engage with him. (informal)
This idiom can reproduce a speaker's dismissive attitude toward another person. Use it cautiously: in professional conflict resolution, उसकी उकसाने वाली बातों का जवाब मत दीजिए is less contemptuous and more precise.
गरम जलेबियाँ देखकर मेरे मुँह में पानी आ गया।
garam jalebiyā̃ dekhkar mere mũh meṃ pānī ā gayā.
My mouth watered when I saw the hot jalebis.
This last expression can be literal bodily response or a conventional image of desire. With nonfood rewards it becomes more obviously figurative and often critical: मुनाफ़ा देखकर उसके मुँह में पानी आ गया.
दिल: emotion, attachment, courage, and personal impact
दिल idioms foreground affect more strongly than the attention-and-inclination patterns with मन. The distinction is not absolute—both words overlap—but दिल टूटना, दिल जीतना, and दिल पर लेना are conventional expressions and cannot simply replace दिल with मन.
| Expression | Meaning and frame | Register |
|---|---|---|
| X का दिल जीतना | win X's affection, trust, or admiration | neutral |
| दिल टूटना | be heartbroken or deeply disappointed | neutral |
| X को दिल पर लेना | take X personally or too seriously | neutral, often conversational |
| दिल छोटा करना | lose heart, become discouraged | informal, usually negated advice |
| दिल की बात कहना | say what one truly feels | neutral, intimate |
नर्स ने अपने धैर्य और अपनापन से पूरे परिवार का दिल जीत लिया।
nars ne apne dhairya aur apnāpan se pūre parivār kā dil jīt liyā.
The nurse won the whole family's heart with her patience and warmth.
उसकी तीखी टिप्पणी को दिल पर मत लो; वह आज बहुत तनाव में है।
uskī tīkhī ṭippaṇī ko dil par mat lo; vah āj bahut tanāv meṃ hai.
Don't take her/his sharp comment personally; she/he is under a lot of stress today. (informal)
एक कोशिश नाकाम हुई है, इसलिए दिल छोटा मत करो।
ek kośiś nākām huī hai, islie dil choṭā mat karo.
One attempt has failed; don't lose heart because of it. (informal encouragement)
The literal body image remains visible in दिल पर लेना: words are treated as a burden placed on the heart. Yet the case frame is fixed—comment को, heart पर. दिल से is a productive adverbial phrase meaning sincerely or wholeheartedly: दिल से धन्यवाद, दिल से चाहना. It should not be inserted mechanically into every emotional predicate.
आँख and आँखें: sleep, awareness, avoidance, and deception
Number matters especially with आँख. आँख लगना uses singular आँख and means drift off to sleep. आँखें खुलना, आँखें चुराना, and आँखें दिखाना conventionally use plural आँखें.
रात भर शोर था; सुबह के क़रीब जाकर मेरी आँख लगी।
rāt bhar śor thā; subah ke qarīb jākar merī ā̃kh lagī.
It was noisy all night; I finally dozed off near morning.
ऑडिट के बाद निदेशक मंडल की आँखें खुलीं।
oḍiṭ ke bād nideśak maṇḍal kī ā̃kheṃ khulīṃ.
After the audit, the board of directors finally woke up to the problem. (formal or journalistic)
ज़िम्मेदारी से आँखें चुराने से समस्या ख़त्म नहीं होगी।
zimmedārī se ā̃kheṃ curāne se samasyā xatm nahīṃ hogī.
Avoiding responsibility will not make the problem disappear.
X से आँखें चुराना pictures avoiding eye contact and extends to evading a person, fact, or duty. किसी को आँखें दिखाना means glare at or intimidate someone (informal). किसी की आँखों में धूल झोंकना means deceive by preventing clear perception; it is vivid but acceptable in journalism and forceful public argument.
नकली आँकड़े दिखाकर कंपनी ने निवेशकों की आँखों में धूल झोंकने की कोशिश की।
naklī ā̃kṛe dikhākar kampanī ne niveśakoṃ kī ā̃khoṃ meṃ dhūl jhoṅkne kī kośiś kī.
By presenting fake figures, the company tried to deceive investors. (journalistic)
Compare literal धूल आँखों में चली गई “dust got into the eyes.” The idiom requires an agent, a victim's आँखों में, and one of two conventional verb choices: धूल डालना or धूल झोंकना. Both mean “deceive”; झोंकना can sound more forceful and vivid, while डालना is also fully idiomatic and common. Context, rather than the choice between these two verbs, distinguishes the idiom from literal dust entering someone's eyes.
Literal and idiomatic readings in context
Many body collocations remain deliberately ambiguous until context resolves them.
बच्चे ने आवाज़ सुनकर आँखें खोल दीं, लेकिन उस घटना ने बड़ों की भी आँखें खोल दीं।
bacce ne āvāz sunkar ā̃kheṃ khol dīṃ, lekin us ghaṭnā ne baṛoṃ kī bhī ā̃kheṃ khol dīṃ.
The child opened his eyes on hearing the sound, but that incident also opened the adults' eyes to reality.
The same words describe a physical action first and caused awareness second. The vector देना marks a bounded result in both. Idiomatic interpretation therefore comes from discourse plausibility, not from a special conjugation.
उसने कैमरे से मुँह मोड़ लिया, और बाद में अपने पुराने समर्थकों से भी मुँह मोड़ लिया।
usne kaimre se mũh moṛ liyā, aur bād meṃ apne purāne samarthakoṃ se bhī mũh moṛ liyā.
He turned his face away from the camera and later abandoned his former supporters as well.
The repeated से supports both a physical source/orientation and a social separation. This literal bridge makes the figurative meaning interpretable, but the extended meaning is conventional rather than freely predictable.
A short dialogue
अदिति: सब लोग मुश्किल देखकर हाथ खड़े कर रहे हैं। — फ़रहान: तुम दिल छोटा मत करो। मैं तुम्हारा हाथ बँटाता हूँ, लेकिन हमें आँकड़ों से आँखें नहीं चुरानी चाहिए।
aditi: sab log muśkil dekhkar hāth khaṛe kar rahe haiṃ. — farhān: tum dil choṭā mat karo. maĩ tumhārā hāth bãṭātā hū̃, lekin hameṃ ā̃kṛoṃ se ā̃kheṃ nahīṃ curānī cāhie.
Aditi: Everyone is giving up when they see the difficulty. — Farhan: Don't lose heart. I'll give you a hand, but we must not evade the data. (informal)
The dialogue sounds forceful but natural among colleagues who know each other. In a formal report, replace the idioms with precise propositions such as दल ने काम जारी रखने में असमर्थता व्यक्त की “the team expressed inability to continue the work.”
Common Mistakes
Translating “help” with a freely invented body-part phrase
❌ रसोई में मुझे एक हाथ दो।
A word-for-word English calque; Hindi uses हाथ बँटाना or मदद करना.
✅ रसोई में मेरा हाथ बँटा दो।
rasoī meṃ merā hāth bãṭā do.
Give me a hand in the kitchen. (informal)
Changing the fixed case marker
❌ उसके दोस्त मुश्किल समय में उसको मुँह मोड़ गए।
Incorrect — the person abandoned is marked with से.
✅ उसके दोस्त मुश्किल समय में उससे मुँह मोड़ गए।
uske dost muśkil samay meṃ usse mũh moṛ gae.
His/her friends turned away from him/her in difficult times.
Changing conventional number
❌ रिपोर्ट पढ़कर मेरी आँख खुल गईं।
Incorrect for the realization idiom — use plural आँखें with plural agreement.
✅ रिपोर्ट पढ़कर मेरी आँखें खुल गईं।
riporṭ paṛhkar merī ā̃kheṃ khul gaīṃ.
Reading the report opened my eyes.
Replacing the conventional image freely
❌ कंपनी ने ग्राहकों की आँखों में रेत फेंकी।
This describes a literal act; replacing धूल डालना/झोंकना with arbitrary sand-and-throw wording loses the deception idiom.
✅ कंपनी ने ग्राहकों की आँखों में धूल डाली।
kampanī ne grāhakoṃ kī ā̃khoṃ meṃ dhūl ḍālī.
The company deceived its customers.
✅ कंपनी ने ग्राहकों की आँखों में धूल झोंकी।
kampanī ne grāhakoṃ kī ā̃khoṃ meṃ dhūl jhoṅkī.
The company deceived its customers. (more forceful wording)
Using a vivid idiom in an unsuitable official statement
⚠️ आवेदन अस्वीकार होने से उम्मीदवार को मुँह की खानी पड़ी।
āvedan asvīkār hone se ummīdvār ko mũh kī khānī paṛī.
Vivid and potentially mocking; unsuitable as the wording of an official notice.
✅ उम्मीदवार का आवेदन आवश्यक दस्तावेज़ न होने के कारण अस्वीकार कर दिया गया।
ummīdvār kā āvedan āvaśyak dastāvez na hone ke kāraṇ asvīkār kar diyā gayā.
The candidate's application was rejected because the required documents were missing. (formal)
Key Takeaways
- Learn each body idiom with its noun number, postposition, and verb.
- Let fixed body nouns participate in normal agreement: आँख लगी, आँखें खुलीं, धूल झोंकी.
- Keep literal motivation separate from conventional meaning; it helps memory but does not license invented variants.
- Treat मुँह की खाना, मुँह लगाना, and हाथ धो बैठना as vivid, stance-bearing expressions.
- Prefer literal, explicit wording when a formal document must avoid blame, mockery, or ambiguity.
