Learners correctly notice Hindi agreement in नया कमरा, नई किताब, नए कमरे and then overgeneralize it: they try to reshape every adjective for gender, number, or case. But adjectives such as सुंदर, साफ़, ख़ुश, तैयार, आसान, मुश्किल, भारी, and बढ़िया are indeclinable: their one lexical form modifies every kind of noun.
The repair is not to ignore agreement. It is to separate two questions: does this adjective have an agreement paradigm? and which other words in the clause must still agree? The complete adjective classes are taught on indeclinable adjectives; this page diagnoses the recurring overcorrection.
Error, intended meaning, and what a listener hears
Suppose a learner wants “the clean kitchen” and produces invented साफ़ी रसोई by analogy with नई रसोई. A Hindi listener can usually recover the intended meaning, but साफ़ी does not sound like ordinary feminine agreement. It resembles a manufactured word rather than a member of the adjective's paradigm.
नई रसोई अब बिल्कुल साफ़ है।
naī rasoī ab bilkul sāf hai.
The new kitchen is completely clean now.
नई declines because it belongs to the -आ/-ए/-ई class. साफ़ does not. One noun phrase can therefore contain visible agreement on one adjective and no visible change on another.
The mistake can create a real lexical near-miss. साफ़ा is a noun meaning a turban, not the masculine form of साफ़. मुश्किलें is the plural noun “difficulties,” not an adjective agreeing with plural questions. सुंदरी can be a literary noun for a beautiful woman; it is not the routine feminine form before तस्वीर.
The corrected pattern: freeze the adjective, not the sentence
The indeclinable adjective remains fixed across gender, number, and case:
| Noun phrase | Features | Correct adjective |
|---|---|---|
| साफ़ कमरा | masculine singular direct | साफ़ |
| साफ़ कमरे में | masculine singular oblique | साफ़ |
| साफ़ खिड़कियाँ | feminine plural direct | साफ़ |
| साफ़ खिड़कियों पर | feminine plural oblique | साफ़ |
भारी बक्सा नीचे रखिए, लेकिन भारी अलमारी को अभी मत हिलाइए।
bhārī baksā nīce rakhie, lekin bhārī almārī ko abhī mat hilāie.
Please put the heavy box downstairs, but do not move the heavy wardrobe yet. (respectful)
Final -ई in भारी belongs to the word itself. It is present with masculine बक्सा and feminine अलमारी alike. Treating every -ī as a feminine ending produces the opposite overgeneralization.
सुंदर पुराना मकान बिक गया, पर सुंदर पुरानी हवेली अभी भी ख़ाली है।
sundar purānā makān bik gayā, par sundar purānī havelī abhī bhī xālī hai.
The beautiful old house was sold, but the beautiful old mansion is still vacant.
सुंदर stays fixed. Declinable पुराना/पुरानी, perfective गया, and the copular frame continue to reflect their controllers.
Why the error spreads beyond the adjective
Some learners see invariant तैयार or ख़ुश and conclude that the whole predicate has stopped agreeing. Only the adjective is invariant; auxiliaries, participles, possessives, and declinable modifiers retain their own grammar.
दोनों बहनें तैयार हैं और उनकी माँ भी ख़ुश है।
donoṃ bahneṃ taiyār haiṃ aur unkī mā̃ bhī xuś hai.
Both sisters are ready, and their mother is happy too.
Plural बहनें selects हैं; singular माँ selects है. Neither तैयार nor ख़ुश changes.
कविता ने दोनों बढ़िया तस्वीरें चुनीं।
kavitā ne donoṃ baṛhiyā tasvīreṃ cunīṃ.
Kavita chose both excellent photographs.
Invariant बढ़िया keeps final -आ, but feminine plural तस्वीरें controls standalone perfective चुनीं. Surface -आ is therefore not proof that an adjective declines.
The tempting near-exception: endings are clues, not classes
Most native adjectives ending in -आ decline: अच्छा/अच्छे/अच्छी, नया/नए/नई. That is a productive, high-frequency class. But shape alone cannot classify every loanword or lexicalized adjective. बढ़िया is invariant, and भारी is not inherently feminine.
Conversely, a consonant-final word is usually a strong candidate for invariability, but the reliable habit is to learn two contrasting phrases: नया कमरा / नई किताब proves declension; साफ़ कमरा / साफ़ किताब proves invariability. There is no honest substitute for storing the lexical class of less predictable adjectives.
A short corrected dialogue turn
अ: कौन-सी साड़ी लूँ? ब: वह सुंदर नीली साड़ी ले लो; वह तुम पर अच्छी लगेगी।
a: kaun-sī sāṛī lū̃? ba: vah sundar nīlī sāṛī le lo; vah tum par acchī lagegī.
A: Which sari should I take? B: Take that beautiful blue sari; it will look good on you. (familiar)
The corrected turn combines invariant सुंदर with agreeing नीली, अच्छी, and लगेगी. The learner must preserve both facts at once.
Common Mistakes
❌ मेहमानों के लिए साफ़ा कमरा तैयार है।
Incorrect—साफ़ा is not masculine agreement for साफ़; it is also a separate noun meaning ‘turban.’
✅ मेहमानों के लिए साफ़ कमरा तैयार है।
mehmānoṃ ke lie sāf kamrā taiyār hai.
A clean room is ready for the guests.
❌ हमने दो सुंदरी तस्वीरें ख़रीदीं।
Incorrect in ordinary prose—सुंदरी is not the feminine agreeing form of attributive सुंदर.
✅ हमने दो सुंदर तस्वीरें ख़रीदीं।
hamne do sundar tasvīreṃ xarīdīṃ.
We bought two beautiful photographs.
❌ ये नए सवाल मुश्किलें हैं।
Incorrect—मुश्किलें is the plural noun ‘difficulties,’ not an agreeing adjective.
✅ परीक्षा के ये आख़िरी सवाल मुश्किल हैं।
parīkṣā ke ye āxirī savāl muśkil haiṃ.
These final questions on the exam are difficult.
❌ ये भारे बक्से अभी यहीं रखो।
Incorrect—भारी is invariant; its final -ī is not replaced by masculine plural -e.
✅ ये भारी बक्से अभी यहीं रखो।
ye bhārī bakse abhī yahī̃ rakho.
Keep these heavy boxes right here for now. (familiar)
Quick self-check
Say the adjective with one masculine noun and one feminine noun. If the established adjective stays identical, do not invent -आ, -ए, -ई, or plural -एँ. Then scan the rest of the phrase: nouns, declinable adjectives, possessives, participles, and auxiliaries may still need agreement. The prevention rule is freeze only the invariant word.
Key Takeaways
- Indeclinable adjectives modify gendered and plural nouns without changing shape.
- English invariability may start the confusion, but overgeneralizing Hindi -आ/-ए/-ई produces the actual error.
- Invented endings can create real nouns such as साफ़ा or मुश्किलें, so the listener may parse a different word.
- An invariant adjective does not suspend agreement elsewhere in the clause.
