The bare stem is the compact verbal form left after infinitive -ना is removed: लिखना → लिख-, बैठना → बैठ-, करना → कर-. It appears by itself in intimate commands and before another verb in compounds and modal chains. It does not carry a tense of its own; the construction around it tells the listener whether the clause is a command, an ability, a completed event, or something else.
Finding the stem
For most verbs, remove final ना from the dictionary infinitive. No vowel has to be added after the resulting consonant: लिख- is the stem of लिखना, and देख- is the stem of देखना. Vowel-final stems remain vowel-final.
| Infinitive | Bare stem | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| करना | कर- | do |
| जाना | जा- | go |
| लेना | ले- | take |
| पीना | पी- | drink |
| खोलना | खोल- | open |
| समझना | समझ- | understand |
यह पता लिखना मत भूलना।
yah patā likhnā mat bhūlnā.
Don’t forget to write down this address.
In that sentence लिखना remains an infinitive because it names the action that must not be forgotten. The bare stem appears only when a construction licenses it; removing ना everywhere is not a general way to make a finite verb.
Bare stems as intimate commands
With तू, the positive imperative is normally the bare stem: आ, बैठ, सुन, कर. This form is (informal) and socially intimate. It is natural with a small child, a close friend in a relationship where तू is established, or in self-talk. Used unexpectedly toward an adult, it can sound condescending or hostile.
ज़रा इधर आ, तुझे कुछ दिखाना है।
zarā idhar ā, tujhe kuch dikhānā hai.
Come here a moment; I want to show you something. (intimate)
पहले मेरी बात पूरी सुन, फिर जवाब दे।
pahle merī bāt pūrī sun, phir javāb de.
Hear me out first, then answer. (intimate)
Familiar तुम usually takes -ओ: आओ, बैठो, सुनो, करो. Respectful आप takes forms such as आइए, बैठिए, सुनिए, कीजिए. These are not bare stems, even when English translates every form with the same plain imperative.
आप अंदर आइए और इस कुर्सी पर बैठिए।
āp andar āie aur is kursī par baiṭhie.
Please come inside and sit on this chair.
Negative prohibitions normally put मत before an imperative. The intimate form remains bare: मत जा, while familiar and respectful forms remain मत जाओ, मत जाइए.
अभी बाहर मत जा; बहुत तेज़ बारिश हो रही है।
abhī bāhar mat jā; bahut tez bāriś ho rahī hai.
Don’t go outside now; it’s raining very heavily. (intimate)
The first verb in a compound
In a compound verb, the lexical verb appears as a bare stem and a following vector verb carries inflection. In लिख दिया, लिख names the event and दिया adds a bounded, often other-directed or decisive completion. In खा लिया, खा names eating and लिया presents completion with a subject-oriented nuance. The exact pragmatic contribution depends on the lexical event and context.
नंदिनी ने मुझे नया पता लिख दिया।
nandinī ne mujhe nayā patā likh diyā.
Nandini wrote down the new address for me.
मैंने निकलने से पहले थोड़ा खाना खा लिया।
maĩne nikalne se pahle thoṛā khānā khā liyā.
I ate a little before leaving.
हवा चलते ही खिड़की अपने आप खुल गई।
havā calte hī khiṛkī apne āp khul gaī.
As soon as the wind started, the window opened by itself.
Only the final vector carries aspect and agreement: चिट्ठी लिख दी, पत्र लिख दिया, किताबें रख दीं. The lexical stem does not agree, and it does not receive ना.
सीमा ने दोनों चिट्ठियाँ भेज दीं।
sīmā ne donoṃ ciṭṭhiyā̃ bhej dīṃ.
Seema sent both letters off.
Here भेज- remains unchanged. Feminine plural चिट्ठियाँ controls दीं because the agent is ने-marked and the object is unmarked. The whole compound, not its first stem alone, determines perfective alignment.
Stems before modals and phase verbs
The bare stem also precedes verbs such as सकना “be able,” पाना “manage to,” and चुकना “finish/have already done.” The final verb carries the morphology: कर सकता है, पहुँच पाई, खा चुका था. These are verbal chains, not sequences of two independently finite clauses.
मैं इतनी छोटी लिखावट पढ़ नहीं सकता।
maĩ itnī choṭī likhāvaṭ paṛh nahīṃ saktā.
I can’t read writing this small. (male speaker)
ट्रैफ़िक के बावजूद हम समय पर पहुँच पाए।
ṭraifik ke bāvajūd ham samay par pahũc pāe.
Despite the traffic, we managed to arrive on time.
मेहमानों के आने तक वह खाना बना चुकी थी।
mehmānoṃ ke āne tak vah khānā banā cukī thī.
By the time the guests arrived, she had finished cooking.
Negation commonly stands before the final modal (कर नहीं सकता) or before the chain (नहीं कर सकता); information structure and rhythm influence the choice. It does not turn the first stem into a separate predicate.
A base for endings is not always a bare form
The habitual लिखता, subjunctive लिखे, future लिखेगा, and familiar imperative लिखो are all built from the stem लिख-, but they are not bare stems: each has an ending or suffix. Similarly, the irregular perfectives किया, गया, and लिया cannot be predicted merely by adding one general ending to कर-, जा-, and ले-. “Stem” names a morphological base, whereas “bare stem” names that base with no overt suffix in the construction at hand.
वह हर रात डायरी लिखता है।
vah har rāt ḍāyarī likhtā hai.
He writes in a diary every night.
हो सकता है कि वह आज जवाब लिखे।
ho saktā hai ki vah āj javāb likhe.
He/She may write a reply today.
These forms use the stem but mark habitual aspect and subjunctive mood respectively. See verb stems and removing -ना for the formation process and its spelling details.
The same event under different viewpoints
Compare forms built around खोल-:
दरवाज़ा खोल और बत्तियाँ जला दे।
darvāzā khol aur battiyā̃ jalā de.
Open the door and turn on the lights. (intimate command)
रवि रोज़ नौ बजे दुकान खोलता है।
ravi roz nau baje dukān kholtā hai.
Ravi opens the shop at nine every day.
आज रवि ने दुकान जल्दी खोल दी।
āj ravi ne dukān jaldī khol dī.
Today Ravi opened the shop early.
The first has an independent bare command and a compound command जला दे. The second adds habitual -ता and present है. The third uses bare lexical खोल- before perfective vector दी, with feminine दुकान controlling agreement. The lexical event stays stable while the construction changes its discourse role.
Common Mistakes
❌ तुम यहाँ बैठ।
Incorrect in the ordinary familiar paradigm — तुम takes बैठो; bare बैठ belongs with intimate तू.
✅ तुम यहाँ बैठो।
tum yahā̃ baiṭho.
Sit here. (familiar)
❌ उसने चिट्ठी लिखना दिया।
Incorrect compound formation — the lexical verb must be a bare stem before दिया.
✅ उसने चिट्ठी लिख दी।
usne ciṭṭhī likh dī.
He/She wrote the letter and got it done.
❌ मैं यह काम कर सकना हूँ।
Incorrect modal chain — सकना must itself carry agreement, not remain an infinitive.
✅ मैं यह काम कर सकता हूँ।
maĩ yah kām kar saktā hū̃.
I can do this work. (male speaker)
❌ मीरा ने किताब पढ़ लीया।
Incorrect spelling and agreement — feminine किताब controls ली in this perfective compound.
✅ मीरा ने किताब पढ़ ली।
mīrā ne kitāb paṛh lī.
Meera finished reading the book.
Key Takeaways
Remove -ना to identify the stem, but use the unsuffixed form only where Hindi grammar licenses it. It stands alone in intimate commands and occurs before vector, modal, and phase verbs. In a chain, the final verb carries agreement, aspect, tense, and mood. Forms such as लिखता, लिखे, and लिखो are stem-based but not bare; irregular perfectives must be learned independently.
