Using a Verbal Noun Instead of a Clause

Hebrew can present an event as a clause — כשסיימתי את הלימודים "when I finished my studies" — or package it as a noun phrase — עם סיום הלימודים "upon completion of the studies." The nominal version is not merely shorter. It removes tense and often the actor, turning the event into background information and raising the register toward official, journalistic and academic prose.

Clause in speech, noun phrase in formal prose

Compare two versions of the same transition:

כשסיימתי את הלימודים, התחלתי לעבוד במשרה מלאה.

kshesiyámti et halimudím, hitkhálti la'avód bemisrá mele'á

When I finished my studies, I started working full-time. (ordinary spoken or neutral written Hebrew)

עם סיום הלימודים התחלתי לעבוד במשרה מלאה.

im siyúm halimudím hitkhálti la'avód bemisrá mele'á

Upon completion of my studies, I began working full-time. (formal, suitable for a CV or official letter)

Both are grammatical. The first keeps the person and tense explicit; the second lets the main clause identify the actor and presents completion as a named stage. If the possessor matters, formal writing can say עם סיום לימודיי "upon completion of my studies."

The same alternation appears after several framing expressions:

ClauseNominal frameEffect
לפני שיצאנולִפְנֵי הַיְצִיאָהbefore we left → before departure
בזמן שנסענובִּזְמַן הַנְּסִיעָהwhile we travelled → during the journey
אחרי שהחליטולְאַחַר קַבָּלַת הַהַחְלָטָהafter they decided → following adoption of the decision
מכיוון שפרסמו את הדוחבְּעִקְּבוֹת פִּרְסוּם הַדּוּחַbecause the report was published → following publication of the report

לפני היציאה בדקו שכל החלונות סגורים.

lifnéi hayetsi'á badkú shekól hakhalonót sgurím

Before leaving, they checked that all the windows were closed.

בזמן הנסיעה אסור לדבר עם הנהג.

bizmán hanesi'á asúr ledabér im hanahág

Talking to the driver during the journey is prohibited. (public notice)

לאחר קבלת ההחלטה נשלחה הודעה לכל העובדים.

le'akhár kabalát hahakhlatá nishlekhá hoda'á lekhól ha'ovdím

After the decision was adopted, a notice was sent to all employees. (formal)

בעקבות פרסום הדוח התפטר השר.

be'ikvót pirsúm hadúakh hitpatér hasár

Following publication of the report, the minister resigned. (journalistic)

💡
Nominalisation deletes grammatical time and person from the embedded event. That is its power and its cost: it lets formal prose foreground the result or sequence, but it can hide who acted. Restore a clause whenever the actor or time relation would otherwise be unclear.

The action's object becomes a construct partner

A verbal noun very often heads a סמיכות chain. What was the verb's direct object becomes the following noun, with no את:

Absolute nounConstruct phraseUnderlying action
כְּתִיבָהכְּתִיבַת הַמִּכְתָּבלכתוב את המכתב
קַבָּלָהקַבָּלַת הַהַחְלָטָהלקבל את ההחלטה / decide
שְׁמִירָהשְׁמִירַת מֶרְחָקלשמור מרחק
פִּרְסוּםפִּרְסוּם הַדּוּחַלפרסם את הדוח

The construct form can change the ending and stress: קַבָּלָה kabalá becomes קַבָּלַת kabalát, and כְּתִיבָה ktivá becomes כְּתִיבַת ktivát. The article belongs on the second member, never on the construct head. The full mechanics are on the construct chain.

כתיבת המכתב ארכה שבוע, אבל האישור הגיע תוך יום.

ktivát hamikhtáv arkhá shavúa, avál ha'ishúr higía tokh yom

Writing the letter took a week, but the approval arrived within a day.

שמירת מרחק מצילה חיים, גם במהירות נמוכה.

shmirát merkhák matsilá khayím, gam bimhirút nemukhá

Keeping a safe distance saves lives, even at low speed.

A governed preposition normally survives

Not every complement becomes the second noun of a construct chain. When the verb selects a preposition, the related noun commonly keeps it:

  • השתתף governs ב־; the noun gives השתתפות בישיבה
  • התנגד governs ל־; the noun gives התנגדות לתוכנית
  • שמר על הכללים corresponds to שמירה על הכללים
  • דן ב־ הנושא corresponds to דיון בנושא

השתתפות בישיבה מחייבת הרשמה מראש.

hishtatfút bayeshivá mekhayévet harshamá merósh

Participation in the meeting requires advance registration. (formal)

ההתנגדות לתוכנית גברה אחרי פרסום הנתונים.

hahitnagdút latokhnít gavrá akharéi pirsúm hanetuním

Opposition to the plan grew after the data were published.

The choice is lexical. שמירת מרחק is a conventional construct, while שמירה על הכללים preserves על. You cannot replace every verbal preposition with סמיכות or insert every object with a preposition.

Naming the actor with a suffix

A possessive suffix on the verbal noun can identify the event's subject:

עם הגעתו למשרד החלה הישיבה.

im haga'ató lamisrád hekhelá hayeshivá

Upon his arrival at the office, the meeting began. (formal)

פרסומו של המאמר עורר ויכוח חריף במחלקה.

pirsumó shel hama'amár orér vikúakh kharíf bamakhlaká

The article's publication sparked a fierce debate in the department. (formal/academic)

The suffix can be semantically ambiguous: פרסומו may be "his publishing" or "its publication." Formal prose tolerates that compression only when context settles the roles; otherwise use a clause or name the actor with בידי.

The superficially similar צאתה needs a boundary label. עם צאתה contains the bound infinitive צֵאת plus a subject suffix, not the verbal noun יציאה. The true verbal-noun version is עם יציאתה. Both are formal, but they belong to different constructions; the former is treated on suffixed literary infinitives.

עם יציאתה מהאולם חזרו העיתונאים לשידור.

im yetsi'atá meha'ulám khazrú ha'itoná'im lashidúr

When she left the hall, the journalists went back on air. (verbal noun + suffix; formal)

💡
Parse a dense formal chain from the head outward: פרסום = publication; פרסום הדוח = publication of the report; בעקבות פרסום הדוח = following publication of the report. This turns a newspaper phrase back into the clause it compressed.

Register is a choice, not grammaticality

In conversation, אחרי שסיימתי את הלימודים is completely natural. In a CV, עם סיום הלימודים or עם סיום לימודיי usually fits the impersonal formal style better. The first is not "wrong Hebrew," so it should not be marked with a red cross; it is a register mismatch only when the document calls for institutional prose.

✅ אחרי שסיימתי את הלימודים חיפשתי עבודה בתחום.

akharéi shesiyámti et halimudím khipásti avodá batkhúm

After I finished my studies, I looked for work in the field. (natural conversation)

✅ עם סיום לימודיי התחלתי לעבוד בתחום.

im siyúm limudáy hitkhálti la'avód batkhúm

Upon completing my studies, I began working in the field. (formal CV style)

Headlines, official correspondence and academic prose favour these noun-heavy chains because they foreground developments and results while suppressing repeated subjects. Parsing them is essential for advanced reading; producing them selectively is one of the clearest signals of control over formal register.

Common Mistakes

1. Putting an infinitive after אחרי or לפני. These prepositions take a noun phrase, while a finite clause needs ש־.

❌ אחרי לסיים את הדוח שלחתי אותו למנהלת

Incorrect — use a verbal noun (אחרי סיום הדוח) or a clause (אחרי שסיימתי את הדוח).

✅ אחרי סיום הדוח שלחתי אותו למנהלת.

akharéi siyúm hadúakh shalákhti otó lamenahélet

After completing the report, I sent it to the manager.

2. Putting the article on the construct head. The second noun makes the whole chain definite.

❌ לאחר הקבלת ההחלטה פורסמה הודעה

Incorrect — קבלת is the construct head and cannot take ה. Write לאחר קבלת ההחלטה.

✅ לאחר קבלת ההחלטה פורסמה הודעה רשמית.

le'akhár kabalát hahakhlatá pursemá hoda'á rishmít

After the decision was adopted, an official notice was published.

3. Keeping את after turning the verb into a noun. את belongs to a definite direct object of a verb, not to the second member of a construct chain.

❌ כתיבת את המכתב לקחה שעה

Incorrect — the nominalised object follows directly in construct: כתיבת המכתב. With a verb, say לכתוב את המכתב.

✅ כתיבת המכתב לקחה שעה, והעריכה לקחה עוד שעתיים.

ktivát hamikhtáv lakhá sha'á, veha'arikhá lakhá od sha'atáyim

Writing the letter took an hour, and editing took another two.

4. Following לאחר directly with a finite verb. A bare finite clause needs the complementiser ש־.

❌ לאחר התקבלה ההחלטה שלחנו הודעה

Incorrect — לאחר takes a noun phrase, or לאחר ש־ introduces a clause: לאחר קבלת ההחלטה / לאחר שהתקבלה ההחלטה.

✅ לאחר שהתקבלה ההחלטה שלחנו הודעה לכל הצוות.

le'akhár shehitkablá hahakhlatá shalákhnu hoda'á lekhól hatsévet

After the decision had been made, we sent a notice to the whole team.

Key Takeaways

  • A clause keeps tense and actor visible; a verbal noun backgrounds them and raises the register.
  • Direct objects often become construct partners: כתיבת המכתב, קבלת ההחלטה, פרסום הדוח. There is no את inside the chain.
  • Governed prepositions survive: השתתפות בישיבה, התנגדות לתוכנית, שמירה על הכללים.
  • Suffixes can name the event's participant: הגעתו, פרסומו, יציאתה. Context must settle whether a suffix is actor or affected entity.
  • צאתה is a suffixed infinitive construct, not a verbal noun; the שם פעולה counterpart is יציאתה.
  • A conversational ש־ clause in a formal document is a register choice, not ungrammatical Hebrew. Use nominalisation where the genre benefits from compression and impersonality.
