שם פעולה: The Verbal Noun of Every Binyan

A שֵׁם פְּעוּלָה (shem pe'ulá) packages an action or process as a noun: כְּתִיבָה "writing," דִּיבּוּר "speaking," הַחְלָטָה "deciding/a decision," הִתְפַּתְּחוּת "developing/development." This is not the infinitive. It is a full noun, with gender, definiteness, construct forms and sometimes a plural.

The five productive pattern families

The five binyanim with an independent active or middle lexical life have characteristic verbal-noun patterns. The vowels are the lesson, so the table is fully pointed on the modern ktiv-male skeleton:

BinyanMain patternRepresentative nounsUsual gender

These are mapping families, not promises that every verb supplies one common noun in exactly the displayed surface shape. Pa'al in particular has several inherited rivals, and weak roots reshape every pattern. Even where a regular form exists, another noun may own the everyday meaning.

💡
Use the table in reverse first: when you meet התרגשות, its הִתְ־…־וּת frame points you toward hitpa'el; when you meet הזמנה, הַ־…־ָה points toward hif'il. Recognition is reliable even where free coinage is not.

Recovering the noun from the verb family

The present participle often makes the relationship easy to see. מזמינה belongs to hif'il, so its action noun is הזמנה; מטיילים belongs to pi'el, so the noun is טיול.

היא מזמינה את הכרטיסים עכשיו כדי שלא ייגמרו.

hi mazminá et hakartisím akhsháv kdei sheló yigamerú

She's ordering the tickets now so they don't sell out.

ההזמנה אושרה, והכרטיסים יישלחו במייל.

hahazmaná ushrá, vehakartisím yishalkhú baméil

The order was approved, and the tickets will be sent by email.

אנחנו מטיילים בגליל כל סוף שבוע פנוי.

anákhnu metaylím bagalíl kol sof shavúa panúy

We hike in the Galilee every free weekend.

הטיול מתחיל בשש וחצי, אז אל תאחרו.

hatiyúl matkhíl beshésh vakhétsi, az al te'akharú

The hike starts at six thirty, so don't be late. (to a group)

The noun may then lexicalise beyond the pure action: ישיבה is both "sitting" and a meeting, ביקור is a visit, הזמנה an invitation or an order. That does not erase the derivation, but it means an English translation cannot be generated from the pattern alone.

Weak roots reshape the pattern

In pa'al, final-ה roots surface with ־ִיָּה. Modern ktiv male doubles the yod, and a morphology table must point that doubled spelling:

VerbVerbal nounReading
קָנָהקְנִיָּיהkniyá buying; a purchase
רָאָהרְאִיָּיהre'iyá seeing; eyesight
בָּנָהבְּנִיָּיהbniyá building; construction

הקנייה השבועית התייקרה שוב, אפילו בלי בשר.

hakniyá hashvu'ít hityakrá shuv, afílu bli basár

The weekly shop has become more expensive again, even without meat.

הבנייה מול הבית מתחילה כל בוקר בשבע.

habniyá mul habáyit matkhilá kol bóker beshéva

The construction opposite the house starts every morning at seven.

Hollow pa'al roots have a shorter surface form: קִימָה getting up, רִיצָה running, שִׁירָה singing, טִיסָה flying/a flight. These are weak-root realisations within the pa'al verbal-noun system, not a licence to replace any missing consonant at will.

אחרי ריצה ארוכה אני צריך לפחות שעה להתאושש.

akharéi ritsá aruká aní tsaríkh lefakhót sha'á lehit'oshésh

After a long run I need at least an hour to recover. (m. speaker)

שֵׁינָה "sleep" is not the hollow קְטִילָה example it can appear to be in unpointed text. Its pointed form and root class are different; use קימה, ריצה, שירה and טיסה when learning the hollow pa'al subpattern. How these nouns replace clauses in actual prose is treated on using a verbal noun.

The two passive binyanim do not add two more nouns

Pu'al and huf'al are the passive partners of pi'el and hif'il. They have no infinitive, imperative or independent verbal-noun paradigm. סידור can name the act of arranging associated with סידר/סודר, and הזמנה the act or result associated with הזמין/הוזמן, but the noun itself does not encode active versus passive voice. If the passive participant matters, Hebrew uses syntax: העובדה שהוא הוזמן "the fact that he was invited," or a more specific lexical noun.

That is why "every binyan" does not mean seven unrelated rows. It means learning how the five noun-forming families relate to the two passive members of the seven-binyan system.

A pattern is not a dictionary

Three collisions show why a lookup remains part of the method:

  • From הסביר, use הֶסְבֵּר for an ordinary countable explanation. הַסְבָּרָה exists, but often refers to public information, advocacy or the institutional activity known in English as hasbara; the two can overlap in some contexts.
  • From נפגש, use פְּגִישָׁה for an ordinary meeting. The regular nif'al noun היפגשות is possible but marked and far less likely in everyday reference to a meeting.
  • With הביט, הַבָּטָה is a real regular hif'il noun. מַבָּט is nevertheless the common lexical noun for a look, glance or gaze. It is wrong to claim that הבטה does not exist; the issue is lexical choice.

לא הבנתי את ההסבר, אפשר לנסות בדרך אחרת?

lo hevánti et hahesbér, efshár lenasót bedérekh akhéret

I didn't understand the explanation; can we try another way?

הוא העיף מבט בשעון ויצא בלי לומר מילה.

hu he'íf mabát basha'ón veyatsá bli lomár milá

He glanced at the clock and left without saying a word.

💡
Learn the verbal noun together with the verb and its everyday sense: הסביר—הסבר, נפגש—פגישה, הביט—מבט/הבטה. A regular form can be morphologically impeccable and still be the wrong lexical choice for your sentence.

Common Mistakes

1. Using an infinitive after a time preposition. English freely says after meeting; Hebrew needs a noun or a clause.

❌ אחרי להיפגש איתה שיניתי את דעתי

Incorrect — אחרי cannot introduce this infinitive. Say אחרי הפגישה איתה or אחרי שנפגשתי איתה.

✅ אחרי הפגישה איתה שיניתי את דעתי לגמרי.

akharéi hapgishá itá shiníti et da'tí legámrei

After meeting her, I completely changed my mind.

2. Dropping the ktiv-male yod in a קִיטּוּל noun. Pointed textbooks may display a shorter classical skeleton; ordinary unpointed writing has the yod.

❌ הדבור שלו היה קצר וברור

Incorrect as ktiv male for the pi'el verbal noun — write דיבור with yod. The form is דִּיבּוּר, dibúr.

✅ הדיבור שלו היה קצר, ברור ולעניין.

hadibúr sheló hayá katsár, barúr vela'inyán

His speech was short, clear and to the point.

3. Reading הכנסות when the intended word is היכנסות. The missing yod changes the noun family and the meaning.

❌ הכנסות לאזור מסוכן אסורה

Incorrect as ktiv male for ‘entering the area’ — הכנסות means ‘incomes’ or ‘insertions.’ The nif'al noun is היכנסות, and it is feminine singular.

✅ היכנסות לאזור מסוכן אסורה ללא אישור.

hikanesút le'ezór mesukán asurá leló ishúr

Entering a dangerous area is prohibited without authorisation. (formal)

4. Moving the stress to the first syllable. The written pattern does not mark stress, but קִיטּוּל nouns are final-stressed.

❌ דיבור, ביקור, סיפור

díbur · bíkur · sípur

Incorrect — the stress falls on the u: dibúr, bikúr, sipúr.

✅ הביקור היה קצר, אבל השאיר עלינו רושם חזק.

habikúr hayá katsár, avál hish'ír alénu róshem khazák

The visit was brief, but it left a strong impression on us.

Key Takeaways

  • The five main families are pa'al קְטִילָה, pi'el קִיטּוּל, hif'il הַקְטָלָה, hitpa'el הִתְקַטְּלוּת and nif'al הִיקָּטְלוּת.
  • Pu'al and huf'al have no independent verbal nouns; the paired pi'el or hif'il noun does not itself mark voice.
  • Weak roots reshape the surface: קנייה, ראייה, בנייה; קימה, ריצה, שירה, טיסה. שינה is a different pattern, not the hollow example.
  • Morphology predicts families, not everyday lexical choice: הסבר rather than ordinary הסברה, פגישה rather than ordinary היפגשות, while הבטה and מבט both exist.
  • A שם פעולה is a noun, not an infinitive. That distinction makes forms such as אחרי הפגישה possible.

  • Hif'il Verbal Noun: הַקְטָלָה (הזמנה, החלטה, הרגשה)B2Hif'il's action noun keeps the ה of the verb, which makes it the easiest binyan to recognise in noun form — הזמין to הזמנה, החליט to החלטה. What the pattern does not give you is a guarantee that the noun you build is the one Israelis use: הסביר's everyday noun is הֶסְבֵּר, and הסברה means something else entirely.
  • Using a Verbal Noun Instead of a ClauseC1Hebrew verbal nouns turn events into compact noun phrases for time frames, headlines and formal prose, while construct chains and prepositions preserve their participants.
  • Abstract Patterns: קְטִילָה and קַטָּלוּתB2קְטִילָה turns a pa'al verb into the name of its action (כְּתִיבָה, נְסִיעָה); ־וּת stacked on an agent noun turns a person into a quality (עַצְלָנוּת).
