Every binyan has a שֵׁם פְּעוּלָה, a noun naming its action, and hitpa'el's is the most mechanical of the set: take the stem you already know and put ־וּת on the end. The resulting nouns are everywhere in written and semi-formal Hebrew — a newspaper paragraph will often have two or three — and the pattern is regular enough that you can read a noun you have never seen and recover the verb behind it.
The pattern: הִתְקַטְּלוּת
| Verb | Noun (pointed) | Written | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
Two details in that table are not decoration. הִתְנַהֲגוּת has a chataf-patach where the others have a plain shva, because ה cannot carry a bare shva. And הִצְטָרְפוּת has a kamatz where the others have a patach, because its ר refuses the dagesh and the vowel in front lengthens instead — the same compensation that gives הִצְטָרֵף its kamatz in the first place.
ההתרגשות שלה הייתה מדבקת, בסוף כל המשרד הגיע לטקס.
hahitragshút shelá haytá midabéket, basóf kol hamisrád higía latékes
Her excitement was contagious — in the end the whole office turned up to the ceremony.
ההתמודדות עם הבירוקרטיה עייפה אותנו יותר מהמעבר עצמו.
hahitmodedút im habirokrátya iyfá otánu yotér mehama'avár atsmó
Dealing with the bureaucracy wore us out more than the move itself.
The metathesis comes along for the ride
The reordered consonants of a metathesising verb stay reordered in its noun. השתתפות, הסתכלות and הצטרפות all keep the swapped ת, which means the noun is only findable in a dictionary if you already know the metathesis rule — look up ה־ת־ס and you will find nothing, because the word files under ה־ס־ת.
הסתכלות אחת בלוח הזמנים הספיקה כדי להבין שלא נגיע.
histaklút akhát belúakh hazmaním hispíka kdei lehavín sheló nagía
One look at the timetable was enough to see we weren't going to make it.
ההצטרפות שלו לצוות הפתיעה את כולם.
hahitstarfút sheló latsévet hiftí'a et kulám
His joining the team took everyone by surprise.
Feminine — and the plural is the trap
Every one of these nouns is feminine, which matters because the ending ־ות looks exactly like a feminine plural. It is not: התפתחות is one development, and it takes singular feminine agreement all the way through the clause.
The actual plural replaces the ־וּת with ־ֻיּוֹת, written ־ויות in ktiv male, where the ו does the job of the kubuts:
| Singular | Plural (pointed, classical) | Plural in ktiv male |
|---|---|---|
After yesterday's developments there's no point carrying on with the original plan.
Where these nouns live
They are the workhorses of smichut, and above all as the head of a construct chain, which is where written Hebrew packs a whole clause into two words: התפתחות המצב, השתתפות בהוצאות, התנגדות ציבורית. The register is semi-formal — journalism, official letters, academic prose, committee minutes — rather than conversation.
ביקשו מאיתנו השתתפות בהוצאות של החוג, מאה שקל לחודש.
bikshú me'itánu hishtatfút bahotsa'ót shel hakhúg, me'á shékel lekhódesh
They asked us for a contribution towards the costs of the club — a hundred shekels a month.
התוכנית נגנזה אחרי התנגדות ציבורית חריפה.
hatokhnít nignezá akharéi hitnagdút tsiburít kharifá
The plan was shelved after fierce public opposition. (journalistic)
This is also the construction English speakers systematically under-use. Where English reaches for a subordinate clause — after the public objected so strongly — Hebrew nominalises and puts the whole idea inside a noun phrase. Learning to do this is most of what separates B2 writing from B1 writing, and the construct machinery is on smichut.
Derivable is not the same as used
Here is the honest limit of the pattern, and it is the same limit that applies to pa'al's קְטִילָה, pi'el's קִיטוּל and hif'il's הַקְטָלָה: הִתְקַטְּלוּת is not fully productive. You can build the noun from almost any hitpa'el verb, and Milog will often have an entry for it — but for a large number of verbs the noun is not the word anyone reaches for, because a rival owns the meaning.
The clearest case is הִשְׁתַּמְּשׁוּת. It is a real Milog headword with a full entry, and it is not the word for "use": שימוש is, and the gap is not close. Counting exact strings in Hebrew Wikipedia (August 2026), 25 pages contain השתמשות and well over 50,000 contain שימוש. The same thing happens across the everyday-action verbs:
| Derivable noun | Pages in he.wikipedia | The word actually used | Pages |
|---|---|---|---|
The one figure above that is deliberately vague is שימוש's. Wikipedia's regex search gives up on a very common string part-way through and reports what it has found, so a query that returns sixty thousand pages one day returns thirty-odd thousand on a busy one; small counts like 25 and 0 reproduce exactly, six-figure ones do not. Read the big number as a floor.
Every noun in the left-hand column is a Milog headword. None of them is a mistake. They are simply not what Israelis write, and the pattern-based guess that produced them is the kind of guess that marks a text as non-native. When in doubt, look the noun up rather than deriving it — and if the dictionary's entry is a bare gloss with no examples while a rival noun has three senses and a page of citations, believe the rival.
השימוש בטלפון אסור במהלך הבחינה.
hashimúsh batélefon asúr bemahalákh habkhiná
Use of phones is forbidden during the exam. (the ordinary noun — this is what you write)
הוועדה בחנה את דפוסי ההשתמשות במים בקיבוצים.
hava'adá bakhaná et dfuséi hahishtamshút bamáyim bakibutsím
The committee examined patterns of water use on the kibbutzim. (academic — grammatical and dictionary-attested, and still the marked choice)
Three that have drifted away from their verbs
A handful of הִתְקַטְּלוּת nouns have stopped being action nouns altogether and become ordinary concrete nouns. They still look like the pattern, and reading them as the action of the verb will send you wrong every time.
| Noun | Verb behind it | What it actually means |
|---|---|---|
| הִזְדַּמְּנוּת | הִזְדַּמֵּן come up, arise | an opportunity — a thing, not an arising |
| הִסְתַּדְּרוּת | הִסְתַּדֵּר get organised, manage | an organisation, a trade-union federation — and with the article, ההסתדרות, the Israeli labour federation |
| הִצְטַנְּנוּת | הִצְטַנֵּן catch a cold | a cold, the illness itself |
Common Mistakes
1. Treating the singular as a plural. The ־ות ending is the noun's own; it says nothing about number.
❌ היו שתי התפתחות חשובות בתיק בשבוע שעבר
Incorrect — the ־ות of התפתחות belongs to the singular. The plural is התפתחויות: היו שתי התפתחויות חשובות.
✅ היו שתי התפתחויות חשובות בתיק, ושתיהן דלפו לעיתונות.
hayú shtei hitpatkhuyót khashuvót batík, ushtéihen dalfú la'itonút
There were two important developments in the case, and both leaked to the press.
2. Building the plural with ־ים. These nouns are feminine without exception, and their plural has its own shape.
❌ הוגשו שלושה התנגדותים לוועדה המקומית
Incorrect twice over — the plural is התנגדויות, and because the noun is feminine the numeral is שלוש, not שלושה: הוגשו שלוש התנגדויות.
✅ הוגשו שלוש התנגדויות לוועדה המקומית והבנייה נעצרה.
hugshú shalósh hitnagduyót lava'adá hamkomít vehabniyá ne'etsrá
Three objections were filed with the local planning committee and the building work stopped.
3. Masculine agreement. The ־ות ending pulls English speakers towards a plural reading and then towards the wrong gender.
❌ ההתנהגות שלו במשחק היה בלתי נסבל
Incorrect — every הִתְקַטְּלוּת noun is feminine singular, and the agreement runs through the whole clause: ההתנהגות שלו הייתה בלתי נסבלת.
✅ ההתנהגות שלו במשחק הייתה בלתי נסבלת והשופט הוציא אותו.
hahitnahagút sheló bamiskhák haytá biltí nisbélet vehashofét hotsí otó
His behaviour in the match was intolerable and the referee sent him off.
4. Putting ה on the head of a construct chain. These nouns head smichut constantly, and this is where the construct rule gets broken most often.
❌ ההתפתחות המצב הפתיעה את כולם
Incorrect — the head of a smichut chain never takes the definite article; the second noun carries the definiteness for both. It is התפתחות המצב.
✅ התפתחות הפרשה הפתיעה גם את מי שליווה אותה מההתחלה.
hitpatkhút haparashá hiftí'a gam et mi shelivá otá mehahatkhalá
The way the affair developed surprised even the people who had followed it from the start.
Key Takeaways
- The pattern is הִתְקַטְּלוּת — the hitpa'el stem plus ־וּת: הִתְרַגְּשׁוּת, הִתְפַּתְּחוּת, הִתְנַגְּדוּת, הִשְׁתַּתְּפוּת, הִסְתַּכְּלוּת, הִצְטָרְפוּת.
- The metathesis carries into the noun, so השתתפות, הסתכלות and הצטרפות keep their reordered ת — and are unfindable without the rule.
- All of them are feminine singular, and the ־ות ending is not a plural. The plural is ־ֻיּוֹת, written ־ויות with a single yod: התפתחויות, התנגדויות.
- Their home is smichut and the semi-formal register — התפתחות המצב, השתתפות בהוצאות. Hebrew nominalises where English subordinates.
- The pattern is derivable but not fully productive. השתמשות, הסתפרות, התגלחות and התחתנות are all real Milog headwords that Israelis do not write; the live nouns are שימוש, תספורת, גילוח, חתונה. Look the noun up rather than deriving it.
- A dictionary's silence proves nothing: Pealim has no entry for הצטרפות, a word Milog carries and Hebrew Wikipedia uses on thousands of pages.
- הזדמנות, הסתדרות and הצטננות have drifted out of the pattern's meaning entirely — an opportunity, an organisation, a cold.

- Pi'el Verbal Noun: קיטול (דיבור, ביקור, טיול)B2 — Re-vowel a pi'el stem from i–e to i–u and you have its action noun — דיבר to דיבור, ביקר to ביקור. The recipe is easy; knowing which verbs actually have one is the work.
- Hif'il Verbal Noun: הַקְטָלָה (הזמנה, החלטה, הרגשה)B2 — Hif'il's action noun keeps the ה of the verb, which makes it the easiest binyan to recognise in noun form — הזמין to הזמנה, החליט to החלטה. What the pattern does not give you is a guarantee that the noun you build is the one Israelis use: הסביר's everyday noun is הֶסְבֵּר, and הסברה means something else entirely.
- When the ת Moves: הסתכל, השתמש, הצטלם, הזדקןB1 — If the first root letter is a sibilant, the ת of the hitpa'el prefix changes places with it — and next to צ it hardens to ט, next to ז it voices to ד. Three outcomes across five letters, one phonetic reason, and a separate mechanism that is routinely confused with it.
