כ־ and כמו: Like, As

Hebrew has two nearby ways to say like or as. כ־ is a one-letter prefix written directly on the next word; it commonly marks a role, capacity or formal comparison. כמו is a free word and is the everyday choice for resemblance and manner. Their overlap is real, but the contrast between “being a teacher” and “acting the way a teacher acts” makes the division visible.

כ־ is attached

The prefix is never written as a separate word. It attaches to a noun or adjective: כמומחה “as an expert,” כרגיל “as usual.” In productive use, it often assigns a capacity: the person or thing is functioning as what follows.

היא הוזמנה לישיבה כמומחית לאבטחת מידע.

hi huzmená layeshivá kemumkhít le'avtakhát meidá

She was invited to the meeting as an information-security expert. (formal/professional)

כמנהל הצוות, הוא אחראי לאשר את החופשות.

kimnahél hatsévet, hu akhra'í le'ashér et hakhufshót

As the team manager, he is responsible for approving leave. (formal/workplace)

Written Hebrew also likes כ־ in compact formulations such as כאמור “as stated,” כמפורט להלן “as detailed below,” and כצפוי “as expected.” They save a whole clause, which is why reports, contracts and news prose favor them.

כאמור, ההרשמה נסגרת ביום חמישי בחצות.

ka'amúr, haharshamá nisgéret beyóm khamishí bakhatsót

As stated, registration closes at midnight on Thursday. (formal/written)

כמו is everyday comparison

The independent word כמו compares one thing, person or situation with another. It can stand before a noun phrase and does not assign an official role.

הסלון נראה כמו מחסן מאז שעברנו דירה.

hasalón nir'é kmo makhsán me'áz she'avárnu dirá

The living room has looked like a storeroom since we moved house.

הוא מדבר בדיוק כמו אח שלו.

hu medabér bediyúk kmo akh sheló

He talks exactly like his brother.

Before a full clause, Hebrew uses כמו ש־: עשיתי כמו שאמרת, “I did as you said.” The ש belongs to the following word, because it introduces the clause.

סידרתי את החדר כמו שביקשת, אבל לא מצאתי את המטען.

sidárti et hakhéder kmo shebikáshta, avál lo matsáti et hamat'én

I tidied the room the way you asked, but I couldn't find the charger. (to a man)

Continue from here to comparison sentences and equality.

Role versus resemblance

The strongest teaching pair is עבד כמורה versus עבד כמו מורה. The prefix makes מורה the person’s capacity or profession. The free word compares how the work was done with a teacher’s behavior; it does not say the person held that job.

אחרי הצבא הוא עבד כמורה בבית ספר יסודי.

akharéi hatsavá hu avád kemoré bevéit séfer yesodí

After the army he worked as a teacher in a primary school. (teacher was his role)

הוא לא מורה, אבל הוא הסביר את זה כמו מורה מצוין.

hu lo moré, avál hu hisbír et ze kmo moré metsuinyán

He isn't a teacher, but he explained it like an excellent teacher.

💡
Ask what the phrase is doing. If it assigns a role or capacity, כ־ is the precise choice: כמורה, כמנהל, כנציג. If it describes resemblance or manner, use כמו: כמו מורה, כמו תמיד, כמו שביקשת.

This is a tendency, not a mathematical wall. Literary and formal Hebrew uses productive כ־ more freely than conversation, while speech reaches for כמו in many loose comparisons. The role-versus-manner pair is reliable because the swap changes the interpretation, not because one form is banned from every neighboring context.

What happens to the article

Like ב־ and ל־, כ־ fuses with the definite article. כְּיֶלֶד means “like/as a child,” while כַּיֶּלֶד means “like/as the child.” In ordinary unpointed full spelling both appear as כילד, so context has to recover the article.

כילד הוא היה מפרק כל צעצוע כדי להבין איך הוא עובד.

keyéled hu hayá mefarék kol tsa'atsúa kdei lehavín eikh hu ovéd

As a child, he used to take every toy apart to understand how it worked. (indefinite: a child)

כילד היחיד בקבוצה, הוא קיבל תשומת לב מיוחדת.

kayéled hayakhíd bakvutsá, hu kibél tsumét lev meyukhédet

As the only child in the group, he received special attention. (definite: the child)

The vowel change and the hidden article are treated fully on article fusion.

כמו before pronouns

Before a personal pronoun, כמו inflects; it does not simply sit before אני or הוא. The paradigm has its own stem pattern. It is not the plural-looking family of עליי and אליי: the third-person masculine singular ends in ־הוּ, כָּמוֹהוּ, and the first person contains an n, כָּמוֹנִי.

אף אחד לא מכיר את הרחובות האלה כמוני.

af ekhád lo makír et harekhovót ha'éle kamóni

Nobody knows these streets the way I do.

היא צוחקת בדיוק כמוהו, אפילו בטלפון קשה להבדיל ביניהם.

hi tsokhéket bediyúk kamóhu, afílu batélefon kashé lehavdíl beineihém

She laughs exactly like him; even on the phone it's hard to tell them apart.

Frozen words to learn whole

Several extremely common words begin with historical כ־ but are now vocabulary items, not invitations to build new forms by analogy: כרגיל “as usual,” כמובן “of course,” כאילו “as if,” כך “thus/that way,” ככה “like this/that” (informal), and כדי “in order to.” Their meanings are partly fossilized.

כרגיל, האוטובוס הגיע בדיוק כשכבר התחלנו ללכת.

karagíl, ha'otóbus higía bediyúk kshekhvár hitkhálnu lalékhet

As usual, the bus arrived just when we'd started walking.

💡
Learn כרגיל, כמובן, כאילו, כך, ככה and כדי as complete words. Knowing that they contain an old כ־ helps recognition, but their modern meanings and vowels are lexical facts.

Common Mistakes

1. Putting a space after the prefix.

❌ היא השתתפה בישיבה כ מומחית

Incorrect spelling — the one-letter prefix attaches: כמומחית.

✅ היא השתתפה בישיבה כמומחית חיצונית.

hi hishtatfá bayeshivá kemumkhít khitsonít

She took part in the meeting as an external expert. (formal/professional)

2. Leaving כמו before a separate personal pronoun.

In the intended standard comparison, do not leave כמו אני as two words. Inflect כמו and use כמוני.

✅ אף אחד בבית לא מבשל כמוני.

af ekhád babáyit lo mevashél kamóni

Nobody at home cooks the way I do.

3. Using resemblance where a formal role is intended.

Both sentences below are grammatical. The mistake is choosing the first when the signer’s official capacity is what matters.

✅ הוא חתם על המסמך כמו נציג החברה.

hu khatám al hamismákh kmo netsíg hakhevrá

He signed the document the way the company representative did. (manner or resemblance, not an official capacity)

✅ הוא חתם על המסמך כנציג החברה.

hu khatám al hamismákh kinetsíg hakhevrá

He signed the document as the company representative. (formal/legal)

4. Treating כמוהו as if it belonged to the עליו pattern.

❌ היא שרה כמויו

Incorrect — כמו has its own suffix pattern; ‘like him’ is כמוהו.

✅ היא שרה כמוהו, אבל הקול שלה עמוק יותר.

hi shará kamóhu, avál hakól shelá amók yotér

She sings like him, but her voice is deeper.

Key Takeaways

  • כ־ is attached and leans toward a role, capacity or compact written formulation.
  • כמו is free-standing and is the everyday form for similarity and manner; כמו ש־ introduces a clause.
  • עבד כמורה says the person worked as a teacher; עבד כמו מורה says the person worked like a teacher.
  • Before pronouns, use the special paradigm כמוני, כמוך, כמוהו, כמונו—not כמו plus a separate pronoun.
