בין covers both English between and among. It can locate something in the space separating houses, describe a choice involving alternatives, name a difference between ideas, or describe a relationship among people. Hebrew does not force the English two-versus-many distinction: the same preposition works with two participants and with twenty.
One complement after בין
When the relevant group or set is already named as one noun phrase, בין takes it directly: בין הבתים “between the houses,” בין החברים שלי “among my friends.” The complement can be definite or indefinite.
יש גינה קטנה בין שני הבניינים.
yesh giná ktaná bein shnei habinyaním
There's a small garden between the two buildings.
בין החברים שלי אני תמיד מרגיש בבית.
bein hakhaverím shelí aní tamíd margísh babáyit
Among my friends, I always feel at home. (m. speaker; the group may contain many people)
The physical image is a middle space, but abstract uses follow naturally. A person can hesitate בין האפשרויות “between the options,” and a fact can stay בינינו “between us,” meaning private to the participants.
קשה לי לבחור בין האפשרויות בתפריט.
kashé li livkhór bein ha'efsharuyót batafrít
It's hard for me to choose among the options on the menu.
Two named members: mark the second one
When two members are named separately, Modern Standard Hebrew favors בין A לבין B. The first בין opens the relation, and לבין explicitly introduces the second member.
הרכבת נוסעת בין תל אביב לבין חיפה פעם בשעה.
harakévet nosá'at bein Tel Avív levéin Khéifa pá'am besha'á
The train runs between Tel Aviv and Haifa once an hour.
יש הבדל גדול בין עובדה לבין שמועה.
yesh hevdél gadól bein uvdá levéin shmu'á
There's a big difference between a fact and a rumor.
Classical Hebrew also uses בין A ובין B, repeating בין after ו־. Both structures are genuine. The practical norm is that the second member receives a marker: modern edited prose usually chooses לבין, while בין…ובין is classical and remains available in elevated, legal and rhetorical writing.
אין להפלות בין עובד ותיק ובין עובד חדש.
ein lehaflót bein ovéd vatík uvéin ovéd khadásh
One must not discriminate between a veteran employee and a new employee. (formal; classical בין…ובין frame)
You will certainly encounter casual בין A ו־B, modeled exactly like English “between A and B.” Editors normally recast it as בין A לבין B, but the useful lesson is the standard pattern, not a claim that the shorter form is incomprehensible or unattested.
Choice, difference and relationships
The preposition itself stays the same across several common semantic frames:
| Frame | Typical Hebrew | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| location | בין הבתים | between the houses |
| choice | לבחור בין האפשרויות | choose among the options |
| difference | ההבדל בין א׳ לבין ב׳ | the difference between A and B |
| relationship | הקשר בינינו | the relationship between us |
| distribution | לחלק ביניהם | divide among them |
אני לא מצליחה להחליט בין הדירה הזאת לבין הדירה ליד הים.
aní lo matslikhá lehakhlít bein hadirá hazót levéin hadirá leyád hayám
I can't decide between this flat and the flat by the sea. (f. speaker)
הקשר ביניהם השתפר מאז שהם התחילו לעבוד יחד.
hakésher beineihém hishtapér me'áz shehém hitkhílu la'avód yákhad
Their relationship has improved since they started working together.
חילקנו את העוגה בין כל הילדים.
khiláknu et ha'ugá bein kol hayeladím
We divided the cake among all the children.
English sometimes changes to with in relationship language—“things are good with us”—or uses from after different. Hebrew keeps בין inside the noun frame: הקשר בינינו, ההבדל בין שתי ההצעות. Learning these chunks prevents literal English preposition transfer.
בין with personal suffixes
Before a pronoun, בין inflects. A separate subject pronoun cannot follow it. The sources used for this guide agree on the following core forms:
| Person | Form | Reading |
|---|---|---|
| between/among me and others | בֵּינִי — ביני | beiní |
| you, m. sg. | בֵּינְךָ — בינך | beinkhá |
| you, f. sg. | בֵּינֵךְ — בינך | beinékh |
| him / the two involving him | בֵּינוֹ — בינו | beinó |
| her / the two involving her | בֵּינָהּ — בינה | beiná |
| us | בֵּינֵינוּ — בינינו | beinéinu |
| you, m. pl. | בֵּינֵיכֶם — ביניכם | beineikhém |
| them, m. | בֵּינֵיהֶם — ביניהם | beineihém |
For the course-wide lookup point, see full preposition inflection tables. In ordinary speech masculine-plural forms also serve mixed groups and are often used even for all-female groups; specifically feminine-plural forms belong mainly to careful formal and written usage.
בוא נשמור את זה בינינו עד שהם יודיעו לכולם.
bo nishmór et ze beinéinu ad shehém yodí'u lekhulám
Let's keep this between us until they tell everyone. (to a man)
תדברו ביניכם ותחזרו אליי עם החלטה.
tedabrú beineikhém vetakhzerú elái im hakhlatá
Talk it over among yourselves and get back to me with a decision. (to a group)
בינותם, ביניים and בינתיים
You may meet בינותם “among/between them” (literary), a variant of ביניהם. Recognize it; do not choose it for ordinary conversation.
Hebrew dictionaries also connect בין with the dual form ביניים, the “space between two sides.” The everyday adverb בינתיים “meanwhile/for now” grew from that same between-space idea. It is now a lexicalized time adverb, not a form you create productively from a new noun.
אני אבדוק את המחיר; בינתיים תמדדי את הדגם השני.
aní evdók et hamkhír, beintáyim timdedí et hadégem hashení
I'll check the price; meanwhile, try on the other model. (to a woman)
The correlative בין…ובין can also organize alternatives with a meaning close to “whether…or.” That conjunctional use belongs on correlatives; the present page keeps בין as a preposition relating participants.
Common Mistakes
1. Leaving personal pronouns separate after בין.
Do not leave nominative pronouns in the learner-built phrase בין אני ואתה. For the ordinary meaning “this stays between us,” inflect the preposition and use בינינו.
✅ זה יישאר בינינו עד שהחוזה ייחתם.
ze yisha'ér beinéinu ad shehakhozé yekhatém
This will stay between us until the contract is signed.
2. Searching for a separate equivalent of English ‘among.’
The phrase בתוך החברים שלי can have its own marked reading, “inside/within my circle of friends.” It is not the neutral way to translate English among my friends; use בין for that.
✅ בין החברים שלי אני לא צריך להסביר את עצמי.
bein hakhaverím shelí aní lo tsaríkh lehasbír et atsmí
Among my friends, I don't have to explain myself. (m. speaker)
3. Writing לבין as two pieces. The ל־ prefix attaches directly to בין.
❌ ההבדל בין הגרסה הזאת ל בין הקודמת
Incorrect spelling — write לבין as one word.
✅ ההבדל בין הגרסה הזאת לבין הקודמת כמעט לא מורגש.
hahevdél bein hagirsá hazót levéin hakodémet kim'át lo murgásh
The difference between this version and the previous one is barely noticeable.
4. Choosing אצל when the relationship itself is meant. אצל is fully grammatical for location “at someone’s place/with someone,” while בין names the relation connecting participants. The two sentences below show the difference.
✅ המצב אצלנו במשרד השתנה אחרי שהגיע מנהל חדש.
hamatsáv etslénu bamisrád hishtaná akharéi shehigía menahél khadásh
The situation at our office changed after a new manager arrived. (אצלנו: location)
✅ הקשר בינינו השתנה אחרי שעברנו לערים שונות.
hakésher beinéinu hishtaná akharéi she'avárnu le'arím shonót
Our relationship changed after we moved to different cities.
Key Takeaways
- בין means both between and among; the number of participants does not change the preposition.
- Use one complement for a group: בין הבתים, בין החברים שלי.
- With two named members, Modern Standard Hebrew favors בין A לבין B; the classical alternative is בין A ובין B.
- Before pronouns, inflect: ביני, בינך, בינו, בינה, בינינו, ביניכם, ביניהם.
- בינתיים “meanwhile/for now” is a lexicalized relative of the old “space between” idea.
