Hausa rubuta means “write, write down, record in writing.” It is a transitive Grade 1 verb: the message, name, report, or other written content is its direct object. A person for whom or to whom something is written enters an indirect-object frame. Its productive weak verbal noun is rubutawa, while related rubutu is a lexical noun meaning writing, text, inscription, or handwriting.
All unlabelled examples are (neutral Nigerian Standard Hausa). Standard boko writes rubuta in all four finite object environments, although speech distinguishes a short-final noun-object form from long-final no-object, pronoun-object, and indirect-object forms. Ordinary examples do not mark those tones or vowel lengths.
Compact form and environment table
| Environment | Ordinary form | Model |
|---|---|---|
| A: no following object | rubuta | Na rubuta. “I wrote.” |
| B: direct-object pronoun | rubuta shi/ta/su | Na rubuta shi. “I wrote it.” |
| C: noun-like direct object | rubuta saƙo | Na rubuta saƙo. “I wrote a message.” |
| D: recipient/beneficiary | rubuta mata / rubuta wa Amina | Na rubuta mata saƙo. “I wrote her a message.” |
| weak verbal noun, no object | rubutawa | Ina rubutawa. “I am writing.” |
| continuative + overt object | rubuta saƙo / rubuta shi | Ina rubuta saƙo. “I am writing a message.” |
| lexical action/result noun | rubutu | rubutunsa “his writing/handwriting” |
For three-syllable Grade 1 verbs, A/B/D have the high–low–high pattern and a long final vowel; C before a noun-like direct object ends low with a short vowel. The boko spelling rubuta deliberately leaves this pronunciation contrast unmarked.
Jiya na rubuta har dare, amma ban gama rahoton ba.
Yesterday I wrote until night, but I did not finish the report. (completive A-form; no object follows rubuta)
Ta rubuta sunan asibitin a bayan takardar.
She wrote the hospital’s name on the back of the paper. (C-form; noun object)
Rahoton ya cika shafuka goma; Kabiru ne ya rubuta shi.
The report filled ten pages; Kabiru wrote it. (B-form; masculine direct-object pronoun)
The written content is the direct object
The direct object names what comes into written form: suna “name,” saƙo “message,” wasiƙa “letter,” rahoto “report,” amsa “answer,” lamba “number,” or an entire content clause. The surface on which one writes normally appears in an a phrase, and the instrument in a da phrase.
Ki rubuta lambar wayarki a nan da alƙalami mai shuɗi.
Write your phone number here with a blue pen. (to one woman; content object, location, and instrument)
Sakataren ya rubuta bayanan taron a kwamfutarsa.
The secretary wrote the meeting notes on his computer.
Jaridar ta rubuta cewa an buɗe gadar bayan an kammala gyara.
The newspaper wrote that the bridge had opened after repairs were completed. (formal/news content clause)
English permits write on the paper without stating content. Hausa can likewise omit an understood object, but takarda after rubuta without a preposition is normally interpreted as the thing written—a document or paper—not automatically as the surface. Use a takarda when the physical sheet is the writing surface.
Yaron ya rubuta a bango da alli, sai aka ce ya goge.
The boy wrote on the wall with chalk, so he was told to erase it. (surface introduced by a)
TAM frames do not change the lexical stem
| Viewpoint or mood | Model | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| completive | ta rubuta wasiƙar | she wrote/has written the letter |
| continuative | tana rubuta wasiƙar | she is writing the letter |
| habitual | takan rubuta wasiƙu | she habitually writes letters |
| future | za ta rubuta wasiƙar | she will write the letter |
| subjunctive | ta rubuta wasiƙar | that she should write the letter |
| negative completive | ba ta rubuta wasiƙar ba | she did not write the letter |
| negative habitual | ba ta rubuta wasiƙu | she does not write letters |
Za mu rubuta cikakken rahoto bayan mun ziyarci wuraren biyu.
We will write a full report after visiting both locations.
Ban rubuta amsar ba domin tambayar ba ta fito fili ba.
I did not write the answer because the question was not clear.
Daraktan ya buƙaci mu rubuta dalilanmu kafin ranar Litinin.
The director asked us to write our reasons before Monday. (subjunctive mu)
The form rubuta is selected independently of the TAM marker. Future za mu, negative completive ban ... ba, and subjunctive mu do not create English-style inflected stems.
Rubutawa and the local object rule
The no-object weak verbal noun is rubutawa. Its -wa disappears before an overt direct object: tana rubuta wasiƙa, tana rubuta ta. If the object has moved to a question, focus, or relative position, no object follows locally and rubutawa remains. See Dropping -wa before a Direct Object for the construction-wide rule.
Hauwa tana rubutawa a teburin kusa da taga.
Hauwa is writing at the table near the window. (no following object)
Injiniyoyin suna rubuta sabon tsarin aiki domin rage haɗari.
The engineers are writing a new operating procedure to reduce risk. (noun object)
Na ba ta bayanan, kuma tana rubuta su a littafinta yanzu.
I gave her the details, and she is writing them in her notebook now. (direct-object pronoun)
Me kuke rubutawa a kan fom ɗin?
What are you all writing on the form? (fronted object; rubutawa remains)
Wannan shi ne jawabin da ministar take rubutawa da kanta.
This is the speech that the minister is writing herself. (relative object gap)
Do not use a possessive object such as rubutarsa in place of rubuta shi in this weak-verbal-noun pattern. Rubutarsa naturally belongs to the noun rubutu and means “his writing/text” or “writing it” only under a different nominal analysis; it is not the neutral continuative direct-object construction.
Writing to or for someone
A recipient or beneficiary immediately follows the verb. A noun takes separate wa; a pronoun takes mini, maka, miki, masa, mata, mana, muku, musu. The written content follows.
Ma’aikaciyar jinya ta rubuta wa likita bayanin zazzabin yaron.
The nurse wrote the doctor an account of the boy’s fever.
Don Allah, ka rubuta mini adireshin otal ɗin a wannan shafin.
Please write the hotel address down for me on this page. (to one man)
Amina ta rubuta musu saƙon godiya bayan sun taimaka mata.
Amina wrote them a thank-you message after they helped her.
The recipient is not a direct object. Compare ta rubuta shi “she wrote it” with ta rubuta masa saƙo “she wrote him a message.” English him and it do not reveal the Hausa case-like role distinction.
Rubutu, rubutawa, and a rubuce
Rubutu is a conventional noun for writing as a product, system, style, or handwriting. It takes ordinary noun morphology: rubutun Hausa “Hausa writing,” rubutunta “her writing,” rubuce-rubuce “writings/documents.” Productive rubutawa names an act and supplies the no-object weak verbal noun.
Rubutun ɗalibin yana da kyau, amma tsarin sakin layinsa yana buƙatar gyara.
The student’s handwriting is good, but his paragraph structure needs correction.
The adverbial expression a rubuce means “in writing/written down.” It does not mean that rubuce is the past tense of rubuta.
Ku aiko da amsar a rubuce domin a adana ta a fayil.
Send the answer in writing so that it can be kept in the file. (formal/administrative)
Common Mistakes
1. Inventing a pre-pronoun -e form
❌ Sakataren ya rubute shi cikin gaggawa.
Incorrect invented form—rubuta is Grade 1, not Grade 2.
✅ Sakataren ya rubuta shi cikin gaggawa kafin taron.
The secretary wrote it in a hurry before the meeting.
2. Keeping -wa before an overt object
❌ Tana rubutawa wasiƙar neman aikin a waya.
Incorrect—weak -wa is absent before the direct object.
✅ Tana rubuta wasiƙar neman aikin a waya.
She is writing the job-application letter on her phone.
3. Removing -wa after object fronting
❌ Wane suna kike rubuta a saman takardar?
Incorrect relative-continuative form for the fronted question object.
✅ Wane suna kike rubutawa a saman takardar?
Which name are you writing at the top of the paper? (to one woman)
4. Using a direct pronoun as the recipient
❌ Hauwa ta rubuta shi wasiƙa daga Abuja.
Incorrect for ‘wrote him a letter’—shi marks a direct object.
✅ Hauwa ta rubuta masa wasiƙa daga Abuja.
Hauwa wrote him a letter from Abuja.
5. Treating rubutu as a finite verb form
❌ Jiya mun rubutu sunayen duk mahalarta.
Incorrect—rubutu is a noun, not the finite completive form.
✅ Jiya mun rubuta sunayen duk mahalarta.
Yesterday we wrote the names of all the participants.
Key Takeaways
- Rubuta is Grade 1; boko hides the long A/B/D versus short C pronunciation contrast.
- Written content is the direct object, the surface commonly takes a, and the instrument takes da.
- The weak verbal noun is rubutawa without a following object but rubuta saƙo/shi before an overt object.
- Recipients use wa or the fused ma series: rubuta wa Amina, rubuta mata.
- Keep rubutawa “writing as an event,” rubutu “writing/text,” and a rubuce “in writing” grammatically distinct.
