Greek frequently turns an event into a noun: λύνω → λύση “solve → solution,” πράττω → πράξη “act → act/action,” γράφω → γραφή “write → writing/script.” These families help you decode vocabulary, especially in formal prose, but there is no universal “noun form of a verb.” The suffix, stem, stress, gender, and conventional meaning are properties of the resulting noun.
The -ση, -ξη, and -ψη families
Feminine nouns ending in -ση, -ξη, or -ψη often name an action, process, or result. The three written shapes reflect different stem histories and sound combinations; they are not three clean semantic categories.
| Verb | Noun | Established meaning | Typical register |
|---|---|---|---|
| λύνω | η λύση | solution; solving | neutral |
| πράττω | η πράξη | act, action; arithmetic operation | neutral |
| λαμβάνω | η λήψη | receipt, taking; shot | formal/technical in many senses |
| ενημερώνω | η ενημέρωση | information, update; informing | neutral |
Η λύση που πρότεινες είναι απλή και δεν κοστίζει πολύ.
i lísi pu prótines íne aplí ke dhen kostízi polí.
The solution you proposed is simple and does not cost much.
Η πράξη του έδειξε περισσότερο θάρρος από τα λόγια του.
i práksi tu édhikse perisótero thárros apó ta lóyia tu.
His action showed more courage than his words.
Η λήψη των φωτογραφιών επιτρέπεται μόνο χωρίς φλας.
i lípsi ton fotoghrafión epitrépete móno chorís flas.
Taking photographs is permitted only without flash. (formal notice)
English freely uses -ing for an event noun. Greek often chooses a lexical noun instead, and that noun may compress participants: η ενημέρωση των κατοίκων can mean “informing the residents” or “the information/update given to the residents,” depending on context.
Γραφή, γράμμα, and γράψιμο
The γραφ- family shows why “action noun versus result noun” is a tendency, not an algorithm.
- η γραφή means writing as a system, style, script, or manner of writing; in careful contexts it can denote the act.
- το γράμμα means a written character or a letter/message. It is a highly lexicalized result noun, not the ordinary name for the ongoing activity.
- το γράψιμο is the transparent everyday process noun “writing, the act/work of writing.”
Η γραφή της επιγραφής διαβάζεται δύσκολα από μακριά.
i ghrafí tis epighrafís dhiavázete dhískola apó makriá.
The lettering on the sign is difficult to read from far away.
Βρήκα ένα γράμμα της γιαγιάς μέσα σε ένα παλιό συρτάρι.
vríka éna ghráma tis yayás mésa se éna palió sirtári.
I found a letter from Grandma in an old drawer.
Το γράψιμο της αναφοράς μού πήρε όλο το απόγευμα.
to ghrápsimo tis anaforás mu píre ólo to apóyevma.
Writing the report took me all afternoon.
Calling every -ση noun “abstract” and every -μα noun “concrete” would therefore mislead. Γράμμα is concrete in many uses, but κίνημα “movement” may denote an abstract social or artistic current; λύση can be an abstract answer or a concrete mixture in technical language.
Neuter result nouns in -μα
Many neuter nouns in -μα denote what an action produces, the event viewed as a bounded whole, or a conventional product: ανοίγω → άνοιγμα, κτίζω → κτίσμα, γράφω → γράμμα. Others in the same declension are not transparently deverbal in current Greek, so the ending alone does not prove a live derivation.
Το άνοιγμα του νέου σταθμού καθυστέρησε λόγω των έργων.
to ánighma tu néu stathmú kathistérise lógho ton érghon.
The opening of the new station was delayed because of the construction work.
These nouns decline with a hidden -ματ- stem:
| Case | Singular | Plural |
|---|---|---|
| nominative/accusative | το άνοιγμα | τα ανοίγματα |
| genitive | του ανοίγματος | των ανοιγμάτων |
Τα ανοίγματα των παραθύρων μετρήθηκαν πριν γίνει η παραγγελία.
ta aníghmata ton parathíron metríthikan prin yíni i paranghelía.
The window openings were measured before the order was placed.
The declensional machinery, including stress movement, belongs to neuter nouns in -μα.
Nouns in -μός
Masculine -μός frequently forms an action, process, state, or result noun: χωρίζω → χωρισμός “separate → separation,” θαυμάζω → θαυμασμός “admire → admiration.” The family is large but lexical: some members, such as σεισμός “earthquake,” are historically connected to verbs but are not useful models for free modern coinage.
Ο χωρισμός τους ήταν δύσκολος, αλλά κράτησαν επαφή.
o chorizmós tus ítan dhískolos, alá krátisan epafí.
Their separation was difficult, but they stayed in touch.
Ο θαυμασμός των παιδιών για την αθλήτρια ήταν φανερός.
o thavmazmós ton pedhión ya tin athlítria ítan fanerós.
The children's admiration for the athlete was obvious.
Noun or clause?
A lexical noun compresses an event and often suits institutional or informational writing. A το να… clause keeps the subject, aspect, and complements more visible. Compare η καθυστέρηση της παράδοσης “the delay in delivery” with το να καθυστερήσει η παράδοση “for the delivery to be delayed.” See nominalization for the syntactic choice.
Η καθυστέρηση της παράδοσης δημιούργησε προβλήματα στην αποθήκη.
i kathistérisi tis parádhosis dhimiúryise provlímata stin apothíki.
The delay in delivery caused problems at the warehouse.
Common Mistakes
Forcing an abstract/concrete split
Context and lexical meaning decide what the noun denotes; suffix shape supplies only a tendency.
Η λέξη λύση εδώ σημαίνει το υγρό μείγμα, όχι την απάντηση.
i léksi lísi edhó siméni to ighró míghma, óchi tin apándisi.
Here the word solution means the liquid mixture, not the answer.
Using γράμμα for the process of writing
For the everyday activity, γράψιμο is normally the transparent choice; γράμμα is a character or message.
Το καθημερινό γράψιμο τον βοήθησε να οργανώνει τις σκέψεις του.
to kathimerinó ghrápsimo ton voíthise na orghanóni tis sképsis tu.
Writing every day helped him organize his thoughts.
Dropping the -τ- outside the singular
The genitive and every plural form use the long -ματ- stem.
Η διάρκεια του ανοίγματος δεν ξεπέρασε τη μία ώρα.
i dhiárkia tu aníghmatos dhen ksepérase ti mía óra.
The opening did not last longer than one hour.
Inventing a noun whenever the meaning seems transparent
Greek may select another suffix, an inherited stem, or a clause. Learn a real family rather than applying one conversion to every verb.
Για αυτή την έννοια το λεξικό δίνει διαφορετικό παράγωγο.
ya aftí tin énia to leksikó dhíni dhiaforetikó parághogho.
For this concept, the dictionary gives a different derivative.
Key Takeaways
- -ση / -ξη / -ψη often name actions or results, but stem shape and meaning are lexical.
- -μα nouns frequently denote results or bounded event products; they decline on -ματ-.
- γραφή, γράμμα, γράψιμο are related but not interchangeable.
- -μός is a broad action/state/result family, not a free mechanical conversion.
