Agent nouns name the person who performs an activity; instrument nouns name the device used to perform one. Greek has recurring patterns—-τής / -τρια, -έας, -άς, -ιστής / -ίστρια, -τήρας, -τήρι—but they differ in productivity and inflection. Professional gender is especially lexical: current Greek uses both paired forms and nouns whose article alone distinguishes gender.
-τής and feminine -τρια
The productive masculine -τής often pairs with feminine -τρια. The feminine is not made by merely replacing final -ς: the suffix changes as a unit, and the stem or stress may also adjust.
| Masculine | Feminine | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| ο μαθητής | η μαθήτρια | student, pupil |
| ο διευθυντής | η διευθύντρια | director, head |
| ο κολυμβητής | η κολυμβήτρια | swimmer |
| ο μεταφραστής | η μεταφράστρια | translator |
Η διευθύντρια κάλεσε τους γονείς σε συνάντηση την Τετάρτη.
i dhiefthíndria kálese tus ghonís se sinándisi tin Tetárti.
The headteacher invited the parents to a meeting on Wednesday.
Ο κολυμβητής και η κολυμβήτρια προπονούνται στην ίδια ομάδα.
o kolimvitís ke i kolimvítria proponúnde stin ídhia omádha.
The male and female swimmers train on the same team.
Masculines in -τής take plural -τές—οι μαθητές, οι μεταφραστές—not the longer -ηδες plural. Their full case pattern belongs to masculine nouns in -ης.
-έας: established agents and common gender
Nouns such as συγγραφέας “author” and γραμματέας “secretary” have singular oblique -έα, plural -είς, and genitive plural -έων. Many are common gender: ο συγγραφέας / η συγγραφέας. The surrounding article and adjectives reveal the intended gender.
Η νέα συγγραφέας μίλησε με δύο έμπειρους συγγραφείς μετά την παρουσίαση.
i néa singraféas mílise me dhío ébirus singrafís metá tin parusíasi.
The new author spoke with two experienced authors after the presentation.
Ο γραμματέας έστειλε την απόφαση σε όλα τα μέλη.
o ghramatéas éstile tin apófasi se óla ta méli.
The secretary sent the decision to all the members.
-έας is an established learned family, not a suffix learners can freely add to any verb.
Trades in -άς
Traditional occupation words such as ψαράς “fisherman/fisher” and ψωμάς “baker” are masculine and end-stressed. They are imparisyllabic: ο ψαράς → οι ψαράδες → των ψαράδων.
Ο ψωμάς της γειτονιάς βγάζει το πρώτο ψωμί πριν χαράξει.
o psomás tis yitoniás vgházi to próto psomí prin charáksi.
The neighborhood baker takes the first bread out before dawn.
Οι ψαράδες πούλησαν την πρωινή ψαριά κατευθείαν στις ταβέρνες.
i psarádhes púlisan tin proiní psariá katefthían stis tavérnes.
The fishermen sold the morning catch directly to the tavernas.
The added -δ- syllable and other long plurals are covered on imparisyllabic masculines.
-ιστής, -ίστας, and feminine -ίστρια
Greek -ιστής / -ίστρια often names a specialist, practitioner, or adherent: διαφημιστής / διαφημίστρια. Borrowed or internationally shaped professions may instead have masculine -ίστας but the same-looking feminine -ίστρια: πιανίστας / πιανίστρια, τενίστας / τενίστρια. Do not collapse the two masculine endings.
Η διαφημίστρια ετοίμασε μια καμπάνια για το μικρό ξενοδοχείο.
i dhiafimístria etímase mia kabánia ya to mikró ksenodhochío.
The advertising professional prepared a campaign for the small hotel.
Ο πιανίστας συνόδευσε την τραγουδίστρια χωρίς πρόβα.
o pianístas sinódhefse tin traghudhístria chorís próva.
The pianist accompanied the singer without a rehearsal.
Common-gender professions in -ος
Neutral current Greek uses η γιατρός, η δικηγόρος, η υπουργός alongside the masculine ο γιατρός, ο δικηγόρος, ο υπουργός. The nominative has the same -ος form for both genders, but the noun still declines by case: τη γιατρό, της γιατρού. Articles, adjectives, pronouns, and predicates take feminine agreement with a female referent. This is the guide's core pattern for these professions.
Η έμπειρη γιατρός εξέτασε προσεκτικά τις ακτινογραφίες.
i ébiri yatrós eksétase prosektiká tis aktinoghrafíes.
The experienced doctor carefully examined the X-rays.
Η δικηγόρος δήλωσε ότι η πελάτισσά της θα ασκήσει έφεση.
i dhikighóros dhílose óti i pelátisá tis tha askísi éfesi.
The lawyer stated that her client would appeal.
Η νέα υπουργός παρουσίασε το σχέδιο στη Βουλή.
i néa ipurghós parusíase to schédhio sti Vulí.
The new minister presented the plan in Parliament.
English usually leaves professional gender unmarked. Greek often marks it in the agreement frame, even when the professional noun itself is common gender.
Feminine alternatives and social meaning
Forms in -ίνα and -ισσα exist, but they are not universal replacements for common-gender professions. Γιατρίνα and δικηγορίνα are (informal/familiar); υπουργίνα is (spoken/informal) beside neutral η υπουργός. Γιάτρισσα and γιατρέσα are (popular/colloquial) and can sound socially colored. Older uses of -ίνα could also identify a professional's wife, so context and speaker preference matter. By contrast, established -τρια pairs such as διευθύντρια and καθηγήτρια are neutral.
Η γιατρίνα της ομάδας είναι παλιά φίλη της οικογένειας.
i yatrína tis omádhas íne paliá fíli tis ikoyénias.
The team's doctor is an old family friend. (informal/familiar feminine)
Instruments: -τήρας and -τήρι
Masculine -τήρας and neuter -τήρι name many devices: ο αναπτήρας “lighter,” ο απορροφητήρας “extractor hood,” το ανοιχτήρι “opener.” They are lexical instrument formations, not masculine/feminine agent pairs.
Το ανοιχτήρι είναι στο δεύτερο συρτάρι, δίπλα στον αναπτήρα.
to anichtíri íne sto dhéftero sirtári, dhípla ston anaptíra.
The opener is in the second drawer, beside the lighter.
Common Mistakes
Giving every -της noun an -ηδες plural
The agent suffix -τής remains parisyllabic.
Οι μεταφραστές παρέδωσαν τα τελικά κείμενα σήμερα.
i metafrastés parédhosan ta teliká kímena símera.
The translators delivered the final texts today.
Treating feminine -τρια as a mechanical ending swap
Learn the complete pair, including stress and stem: διευθυντής → διευθύντρια.
Η διευθύντρια του μουσείου μάς ξενάγησε προσωπικά.
i dhiefthíndria tu musíu mas ksenáyise prosopiká.
The museum director gave us a personal tour.
Assuming a masculine-shaped profession requires masculine agreement
With a female referent, the agreement frame is feminine.
Η γνωστή δικηγόρος ήταν καλεσμένη στην εκπομπή.
i ghností dhikighóros ítan kalezméni stin ekpobí.
The well-known lawyer was a guest on the program.
Using an informal feminine as universally neutral
Alternatives can be natural in familiar speech without being the default in official prose.
Στην επίσημη ανακοίνωση αναφέρεται η υπουργός Πολιτισμού.
stin epísimi anakínosi anaférete i ipurghós Politizmú.
The Minister of Culture is named in the official announcement.
